“Poor service, disappointing meal.”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

This is purely about the restaurant as we did not use any of the facilities or accomodation.
We went last Friday night for a special family meal. The service was pretty much non-existent. There was no warm welcome or smile, our order was taken and then we had to wait 40 minutes for our starter whilst rhe restaurant was nearly empty. The food was mostly OK, but the Belly Pork dish, which is quite difficult to get right, was badly cooked with way too much fat under the crackling. The Steak was overcooked and the pepper sauce inexplicably full of mushrooms.
Overall, it was a disappointing dining experience and the standard of cooking fell far short of both expectations and the price tag.

I stayed with my four year old son to break up a long journey visiting relatives in the UK and found the accommodation and food spot on. We stayed in the Edwardian room and found it peaceful and really quiet at night - no road noise. It was the best sleep we both had in our entire trip! Lots of thought and detail had gone into the room down to the old-fashioned tea pot, which got lots of use, and the shower was fantastic.

My son loved the woodland walk and generally exploring the space, with lovely art to discover, which was great after a long car journey.

In the evening we ate at the restaurant. The food was very well presented, lovely and tasty and came out quickly, which is always good with a pre-schooler. The children's menu had a great selection and was very reasonably priced. The staff were really attentive and brought out the ice-cream I ordered straight away, which was great as my son was starting to get a bit tired by then.

Breakfast the next day was absolutely fantastic with a great selection of fresh fruits, yoghurts, cereals etc, followed by the most delicious cooked breakfast with the best tasting sausage, bacon and eggs, all sourced locally.

I can safely say that staying here was an absolute highlight of our trip and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

As a local passing this place often and seeing a full car park, I decided to call in. A young girl served us with our food order and there was no customer service there at all, our order was taken robot like with no eye contact, just disappointing when so much effort has gone into location and food sourcing. I had a salad with olives and feta, fresh but not one drop of olive oil just water at the bottom of the dish, made what could have been a memorable dish a chore to eat. My parents enjoyed their meals. Just dont forget the power of hi there!

Good place to catch up with people, have high tea, a snack or a meal out. Very decieving as bigger than it looks. The restaurant has 2 rooms which are both cosy and have a 'warm' feeling about them. The decoration is lovely too. Service is always good and there are regular faces on the staffing who are very polite and attentive. The cafe are is both in and outside and are good sized areas. Also nice to meet in this area before going into the restaurant as there are comfy sofa's. There is a superb range of delicious desserts in the display cabinet and all the food is to a high standard and home cooked. Much is also sourced locally. Portion size is good too. Sunday lunch is traditional and as it should be.
There is a really lovely shop which again is very decieving in size and there is a small art gallery which displays the work of local artists. There are several rooms for accomodation and each has a theme.
Excellent place to come.

We went for the shop and the restaurant, so I can't comment on the accommodation.
We had morning tea outside the restaurant, and the service was appalling slow for just scones and tea. The restaurant was fairly empty, so they couldn't use busyness as an excuse. We also got the impression they had forgotten the food part of our order, as it turned up a long time after the drinks! That is a shame as it was a really nice courtyard with plenty of space at big tables.
There was nothing really special or unusual in the shop, but the woodland walk was good. It seemed a little run down and care worn, but my two year old did enjoy the fibre glass sheep and pigs and the mosaic dragon. He liked finding all the bits in the woods, such as the teddy bears picnic, the toadstool clearing and all the little fairy doors.
There were some large patches of nettles bordering and overhanging parts of the path that could do with chopping down.
We might stop again to give Alex a bit of exercise if we are passing, but I would not purposefully make the trip over there just for Wold's Village itself.

We returned to Wolds Village 3 months after trying it out for the first time and I've been dying to get back ever since! Our first visit was on a busy bank holiday and could have been a little daunting but the staff were genuinely warm and friendly and really put us at ease. We had the Afternoon tea which had received an excellent review by the food critic in the Yorkshire Post and yep, he was right - it was a joy!

This time I had the steak with pepper sauce. Well, what a treat! The steak was cooked to perfection, so tender and the sauce was moreish. Once again front of house staff were friendly and chatty and we were made to feel so welcome which is important to me.

Afterwards we wandered around the gallery, I've been inspired by a couple of the exhibited artists on both visits - the work currently on show by Ian Mitchell particularly caught my eye.

In short, if you're looking for good, honest food as well as an environment where people really to care then you shouldn't hesitate...
