“very friendly staff”
Reviewed July 27, 2013

Interesting display, won't keep you long, but the staff are friendly and enthusiastic. An energetic walk along the canal and great for families. (Doesn't cost you anything either, although a donation is welcomed) especially good for canal/industrial history enthusiasts, cyclists and walkers. No use for kayakers!

“Fourteen locks”
Reviewed April 9, 2013

A visit to this area gives you an insight to the extreme difficulties of canal building. Fourteen Locks, as it's name suggests is the uppermost level of the canal system and climbs from the lower canal beside the M4 motorway to this level via the locks at an incredible rate. Whilst at 14 Locks the Conference Centre is a small building with a shop stocked with memorabilia to the canal and area. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and from this point, you can walk the towpath alongside the canal up as far as Cwmcarn, where the canal system now ends. During this walk it is possible to see many wild creatures and kingfishers are one of the varieties of birdlife that live and feed at the side of the canal.

“Fourteen Locks”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

This is one of the great eighteenth century engineering achievements in Wales. The canal had to come down a hill from the valleys to newport, and to do this, the Fourteen Locks complex was built.
In the last few years,a proper visitor Centre has been built, and the locks are being completely restored, hopefully to the former glory. The Visitor centre has food, drink and toilet facilities,as well as pleasant and helpful staff.

“Father Christmas at the Locks”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

We spent a wonderful few hours here, first we started with a nice hot cup of coffee and Welsh cakes in the cafe before setting out on a walk. We browsed among the information corner and learned a bit about the canal system in Wales and their usage. Very enlightening as was the range of books on this subject which they had on sale to help with their fundraising.
Whilst we were there lots of Children were queuing up to visit Father Christmas in his grotto and a happy lot they were too. What a great way to raise funds towards supporting the work of this voluntary aided attraction. I imagine on a sunny day it would be hosting lots of walkers on the various canal paths, upalong and downalong as they say. We took our walk along the canal pathways upwards for an about an hour each way and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We aim to go again in the Spring as the views were amazing.
This is worth a visit if you are in the area. Well done those volunteers, you're a lovely bunch of people.
