If you don't have long in Tajikistan, for goodness sake put this at the top of your destination list. The joruney across Tajikistan from Khojand or Dushanbe is dramatic and a treat in itself. The Seven Lakes are idyllic, calming and stunningly beautiful. Each of the lakes is a different colour and named after body parts! In the evening, the area is filled with a rich aroma of mountain herbs and if you are lucky enough to visit on a sunny day, you will be blessed with some amazing photos! The villages around the Seven Lakes are picturesque and the people welcoming and if they will let you, make for some fantastic portraits.
Stay in Jumaboy's homestay near the third lake and you will not be disappointed. Jumaboy is an incredible host and makes you feel very much at home. His simple homestay is clean and you will be treated to traditional Tajik fare much better than anywhere else on your visit and made with organic produce from Jumaboy's garden. Seven Lakes for me is as much about sitting on Jumaboy's tabchan (day bed) as it is staring at the reflections in the mighty sixth lake.
