Owner description: The Churnet Valley Railway, is a picturesque heritage Steam Railway that runs through Staffordshire’s Little Switzerland, the Churnet Valley. It meanders alongside the Caldon Canal and the River Churnet for a delightful nostalgic 11 mile return journey. Kingsley & Froghall Station has ample parking and disabled access and is home to the award winning traditional Tea Room plus the railways Souvenir Shop, both of which are open on running days. Consall Station has no public road access making it very quiet and isolated in its situation beside the weir on River Churnet where the canal splits from the river. Nearby are the Lime Kilns and the Black Lion Public House. At Cheddleton Station you can visit the Railway’s Engine Sheds and its small Railway Artifacts Museum. Trains run most Sundays from February to October, and full weekends from Easter as well as Wednesdays from June to September. Additional services run on all Bank Holiday Mondays and school holidays.

My (then) fiancé took a ride on this railway last summer and it was a really pleasant day out in the country. You're on the train for a good amount of time and certainly when we went there was plenty of spare seating and space in the carriages. The line has lots of nice scenery to look out on and the Windows are plenty big in the carriages so that you can get an excellent view.

On the negative points it was a little expensive for what you get and on the day we went the steam engine was off so we had to use the electric engine which while still old fashioned obviously isn't the same. I wouldn't hold this against the attraction as obviously most people will get to experience the steam engine if it wasn't for the fact that we still had to pay full price. A discount would have been nice under the circumstances.

Still it was a very pleasant day out in the sun and something totally different to what I'd normally do. I can certainly recommend it.

After many years of wishing to visit the opportunity came with the Winter Gala in February 2013. and what a great event that was with extra special ride onto the Caldon Low line behind a live steam loco. A great fun day, even in the freezing cold, and friendly staff dressed to thrill with appropriate uniforms.
Also after a return trip from Froghall the welcoming hot food in the excellent cafe was a bonus. we will visit again if we can.

Lovely setting in the country side. Used to take my son a lot on these trains. The Christmas packages are particularly good. There are stops to get off at with cafe's and toilets and if you fancy going for a walk/ramble there are plenty to choose from.

out of the two railway heritage centers in staffordshire, churnet valley railwayis vastly superior with it's 5 mile track, ride on trains, wheelchair access, toilets, ample free parking, gift shop and cafe, nothing to dislike about it, an enjoyable day for every-one.
