We booked the Verdon as we were attending a friends wedding in the area. As there were 4 of us traveling (2couples) we decided to book two rooms. As we don't get to stay away from home very often we decided we would spend a bit extra and go for a b&b for a bit more of a personal touch instead of the local travelodge etc, big mistake.
The website made it look well furnished and modern. These pictures must have been taken the day the walls were painted. From the moment we stepped into the Verdon there was a very strong damp and musty smell, It was on a verge next to a very busy road and roundabout (not mentioned on the website), and no clear area for off street parking as mentioned on their site.
We had booked 2 en-suite rooms but on arrival a previous guest had broken the lock to what would have been one of our rooms (blessing in disguise). Our friends who got the only remaining en-suite room got a room the stank of damp had scuff marks all over the walls, a big greasy smear across the tv and a bed base that was so dirty and torn that when my friend went to pull back the mattress cover I told her to stop as i don't think we could have taken anymore filth. Our room was cleaner except for the big dirty hand print half way up the wall. At breakfast toast and tea from our breakfast order was forgotten, annoying especially when paying £5 a head for breakfast and reminding the cook/waitress about the forgotten items to no avail. Then to top it off when we were showering in preparation for the wedding the showers cut out causing a lot of stress especially for us girls. We were told by the landlady that this had not happened before, I'm not sure if I believe her as it was clearly a issue to do with water pressure. She did offer the use of the showers down stairs but as you can imagine none of us wanted to streak through the hotel in the worlds smallest towels.
All in all our 2 night stay felt like a complete rip off and surprising that not even £1 was knocked off after reporting the problems with the showers and not gaining both rooms that we had booked. We paid around £40 a night for these rooms. Thank you Verdon you have certainly put me off staying at private b&b's and put a real damper on the weekend.

never again would i stay here, terrible excuse of a hotel, stayed for 4 nights and not once was any of the 3 bed sheets changed! never was a hover used, no cleaning was done.. soo dirty, there are 13 room and you have to share toilets and shower rooms, only 2 rooms for showers, they were never cleaned either!! even after a shower and walking to your room you collected so much dirt from the floor on your feet!! urgh!!!! everything in this hotel needs updateing, its all from 90s, sheets, paint, furniture,
the hotel is next door to a half way house full of drugies and drunks always outside the hotel, on arrievale someone from there was being arrested!! then as we was leaving we found out it was the hotel cleaner!!!!!!! no way!!!!
its in the town center witch is a run down trampy area full of jeremy kyle folk!!!
people were in pubs at 8am drinking!!! so by 4pm there was drunks everywhere, all this 100 meters from the hotel,
my advice is pay an extra £10 and stay somewhere else!!!
dont do it to yourself!!!
any good reviews must be from the owner or friends!!

Room Tip: just dont stay here

verdon1, Owner at Verdon Guest House, responded to this reviewResponded September 7, 2012

As a family, we were devastated to read this entry onto Trip Advisor and truly feel that the portrayal is wholly unjust and unfair. We are also saddened that one of our guests has left us with the impression that he conveys – this is not normal! If it was such a bad experience, why did the guest stay for the full four nights and not complain to us at all? It appears that he has left seven other reviews on hotels around the country which are all along a similar vein. We would like to respond to all of the points in order to try and establish a more accurate description of the reality of life at the Verdon.

Firstly, to address the comment “bed sheets were never changed”: The vast majority of hotels from a one to a five star, do not change the sheets when a guest is booked in for more than one night. This being primarily due to eco-friendly business and a recognition that the majority of guests are happy for this to be the case. As with other hotels, we would of course have provided fresh sheets on a daily basis had the guest requested it. Many of the high-end (expensive) hotels leave notices politely asking guests to inform them if they want their towels or beds changed. This is an environmentally friendly and standard procedure adopted by almost all hotels and it is assumed that beds will be made up utilising the same sheet.

With regards to the ‘sharing of toilets and shower rooms’, the Verdon is a large Victorian property and the layout does not lend itself to being able to provide every room with an en-suite bathroom. There are indeed thirteen rooms. Six of the thirteen rooms are en-suite and have private shower rooms; the remaining seven rooms share three large shower rooms, equating to a total of just two rooms that require the sharing of a shower room. Please bear in mind that we are NOT a luxury hotel and our low tariff belies the high standard of service and quality we offer. This guest paid a mere £16.67 per night (plus £3.33 vat) and we challenge anyone to find a guesthouse that offers the same level of quality and service for this extremely competitive price. In this instance, we feel that we have perhaps been compared to the level of service that a guest would expect to receive from a high-end hotel. As such, we believe there has been a loss of perspective in the review and as the vast majority of our guests will attest, we do in fact provide extremely good value for money.

We are struggling somewhat to understand how this guest managed to collect so much dirt on his feet. Our bemusement is based upon the fact that all of our rooms are cleaned and vacuumed each day although if (as sometimes happens), we have other guests who walk through the guesthouse with gritty shoes, we may not have a cleaner immediately available to follow that guest round with a hoover. As a small family-run guest house, we unfortunately cannot provide twenty-four hour house-keeping, try as we might.

“Everything needs updating.” We decorate/refurbish the rooms on a rotating and perpetual basis. This of course means that there are always some rooms that are more dated than others. Many of our rooms are highly modern and contemporary and yes, there are some that are awaiting redecoration. It is very rare that we receive comment on this subject, let alone a direct complaint. We would invite any reader to refer to our website for photographs (which are truly representative).

The hotel is situated in the town centre of Hanley within Stoke-on-Trent and the location of the hotel is very central. As we are sure the majority of pragmatic people will agree, most major cities and town centres accommodate their fair share of the somewhat darker side of humanity – a sad but true fact and unfortunately we as a guest house, have neither the staff, the authority or the remit to provide a policing service for the local community.

The claim by the author that our (very sweet and law-abiding) cleaner had been arrested is utterly without substance or foundation and we are extremely angry that such a claim has been made. Ironically, we do however take comfort from the author’s claim because it does tend to support our theory that the review has been largely derived from a melodramatic standpoint and thus diminishes its credibility.
There have been 58 reviews posted on trip advisor to date (July 2012), rated as follows:
Excellent: 23
Very Good: 19
Average: 4
Poor: 3
Terrible: 9
The statistics show that 73% rate us as very good or excellent. This is a very similar spread to that of many other hotels and reflects the fact that different people have different views and expectations.

The writer accuses us of asking friends to write reviews for us, or that we even write our own! This could be considered to be a libellous statement. I can categorically state that we have NOT done this and NEVER would. We strive to provide a warm service and we care deeply about our guests, their comfort and the enjoyment of their stay. We understand that anyone who chooses to operate their business on the basis of manipulation has a very short-term approach and such lack of integrity is not conducive to a sustainable and successful business. We have been operating successfully as a guest house for 32 years, and for good reason.

After working so hard to please all our guests, it is very upsetting to read such comments and we are ultimately saddened that we could be ‘reviewed’ in such a manner. The majority of guests who stay with us, many of whom are doctors, actors, tourists, ballet dancers, contractors, Alton Towers visitors, nurses, barristers, other professionals, couples or families do return year after year and that says a lot about our little guesthouse and the service we provide.

Great family option! The staff very friendly. Breakfast was of good selection. Great location as it's in front of bus garage yet quiet rooms, great for us as we don't have a car. Stayed 2 nights as a midway point for Alton Towers and Shugborough Estate. My kids loved the walk in shower and beds. They would go back tomorrow if they could, which says it all.

Room Tip: Room 4 had two adjacent rooms with own entrance. Great for families.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for 2 nights whilst visiting Alton Towers.
Fantastic location - as next door to the bus station that took us there!

The room was spacious, extremely, comfortable, and luxurious with a lounge area and the biggest TV I've ever seen which was great to watch Wimbledon on!

The bathroom was state of the art modern with a powerful double shower.

Didn't have breakfast as we bought food from Iceland across the road and could store in the fridge and use the plates and cutlery that were provided.

The owner was sooooo lovely and kept our bags for the whole day so we could go to Alton Towers - even though we'd already checked out.

Didn't want to leave! Actually want to live there - the annex room 6a is better than my own house and like an apartment.

Fantastic value for money,
Definitely coming back to stay!
