“Such a missed opportunity”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2014

This could be such a nice place, but sadly the management seem to be intent on alienating local people, and therefore are totally reliant on people from outside. Hence when we went for lunch on the Saturday between Christmas Day and NYD, we were only the second table to be eating. This made for absolutely no atmosphere, and is not the first time this has happened to us in the past year. It is our nearest pub, and since two others have closed in the past couple of years (The Stag at Mentmore and the Hare & Hounds at Ledburn) it is crazy that the owners haven't jumped at the chance to grab potential clientele. The food was fine, to be fair, and the staff are friendly and smiling. But how soul destroying it must be for them when the place is almost deserted. The landlady is a stern, businesslike woman, not really suited to the persona of a welcoming host, and rarely seen - please, turn this place around and back into a village pub that also happens to serve good food, or I feel that your days in the village are numbered. And what a shame that would be.

“A delightful inn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2013

A day off work together so my husband and I decided to have lunch in a local pub. Although we have lived in the neighbouring village for the past 16 years, this was the first time we have visited The Old Swan in Cheddington.
On entry, we were immediately impressed by the relaxed yet smart interior. A lovely blazing inglenook fireplace and lots of tables, but not so many as to make it cramped. The ceilings are low but the decor is calming so not claustrophobic. The bar staff were very friendly and welcoming. My husband and I are not serious drinkers so found the choice of beers on tap were adequate. The menu is small but the quality of the food is excellent. Several other people were eating and we heard lots of mmmm's and yum's. My husband had gammon steak and chips. I had steak and ale pie with mash and veg. Delicious. We both had chocolate brownie sundae. They were not the biggest portions we have had but they were not too sickly and left us satisfied without feeling bloated. Other dishes we saw being enjoyed were massive sandwiches, fish and chips, soup of the day, all of which looked really appetising and were being thoroughly enjoyed.
We will definitely be making a return visit to The Old Swan soon. We would like to recommend it to others but hope that it does not get too busy as we loved the quiet.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2013

Just an afternoon on a Saturday driving past so we popped in with our baby for a bite to eat. Great idea. Food was lovely, staff helpful and accommodating, fast service. Really nice village pub which is welcoming. Will be going back again!

“Good food, good service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2013

Popped in here for lunch this week - simple but varied menu, with good vegetarian choices, excellent, friendly service. This was our second visit this year, and we will definitely go again

“Lovely Lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 27, 2013

I went with a group of friends for a birthday lunch. We all had the goats cheese and red onion tart. It was definitely homemade, presented really well on a bed of salad, and was delicious. The desserts were also all delicious and beautifully presented. We had very good and friendly service from the young waitress. I would definitely go back.
