This could be such a nice place, but sadly the management seem to be intent on alienating local people, and therefore are totally reliant on people from outside. Hence when we went for lunch on the Saturday between Christmas Day and NYD, we were only the second table to be eating. This made for absolutely no atmosphere, and is not the first time this has happened to us in the past year. It is our nearest pub, and since two others have closed in the past couple of years (The Stag at Mentmore and the Hare & Hounds at Ledburn) it is crazy that the owners haven't jumped at the chance to grab potential clientele. The food was fine, to be fair, and the staff are friendly and smiling. But how soul destroying it must be for them when the place is almost deserted. The landlady is a stern, businesslike woman, not really suited to the persona of a welcoming host, and rarely seen - please, turn this place around and back into a village pub that also happens to serve good food, or I feel that your days in the village are numbered. And what a shame that would be.
