Saltycrax I'm sure would be great if you were traveling in a group and more interested in surfing than seeing Cape Town. But if you like to be in the thick of things with a lot of people around, try somewhere a little closer.
Saltys is 20-30mins from the centre city, on a quiet street in Table View. If you take a walk along the beach towards the city at sunset you can get some amazing views of Table Mountain if it's a clear evening, but that's about all it has going for it. The rest is just a typical feeder-town - malls, buses and suburban houses. It does give one a sense of independence commuting into the city like a local.
Saltys has reasonably helpful staff, a nice lounge and 3 somewhat sociable dogs, but you are left to fend for yourself most of the time unless you're a volunteer at one of the programmes saltys runs.
Basically, it's nice enough, but if you want to meet lots of people, go out at night or be within walking distance of the main attractions of beautiful Cape Town, perhaps look somewhere else.More
