Green Elephant in Observatory: my best address in Cape Town!
First of all: friendly and very helpful staff, relaxed atmosphere, guests and staff mingle and become friends.
Secondly: very charming house with open-air bar outside and swimming pool, pizza-special and other activities
Thirdly: reasonable prices
Fourthly: Observatory is the perfect suburb in Cape Town. 10 min. by minibus to the city centre, It is save, there are lots of bars and restaurants and nice shops, good night life - no need to go to Long Street, just enjoy Observatory!
and finally: I stayed in Green Elephant in 2001/02 with my family and came back alone in 2012. Still I cannot imagine there is a better hostel on this planet. The atmosphere and the staff are unique!

Room Tip: Dormatories are very big - enough space for all your personal items.

A wonderful hostel, which I would highly recommend.

My boyfriend stayed here for a month whilst working at Groote Schuur hospital, then I came out to join him for a holiday at the end of his placement. The Green Elephant staff helped him book activities, took him out an showed him the sights and made it feel like home from home for him. When I joined him I was greeted with an equally warm welcome, it is a really friendly place to stay. All you can eat pizza night and quizzes etc. allow you to meet others staying in the hostel, which is really great if you are travelling alone and want to get involved. Also there are lots of communal seating areas in and outdoors if you want to chill out day or night, plus large well equipped kitchens if you want to cook.

Really great spot if you are working at the hospital, uni etc and is also walking distance from lower main street with some lovely bars, cafes and restaurants. There is a Pick and Pay supermarket very near by (10 minute walk) and you are only a short taxi ride away from Long Street, if you want a bigger selection of bars, restaurants and clubs.

The hostel felt very safe with cctv and security guards on foot patrol, can't fault it, a fantastic place to stay!

Room Tip: Some private rooms do not have a bathroom/toilet, however the facilities are literally outside your...

Was a nice place to stay for the night. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. The house was noisy though and I had trouble getting to sleep at night. Whenever somebody walked up the stairs I could hear it. The room was clean and perfectly adequate.

The Green Elephant was the perfect place to stay for the group I traveled with. It has a fun atmosphere, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. They were willing to organize transportation, order take-out, and provide information regarding places to eat and shop. The other guests were also very friendly and courteous. I would recommend the GE to young travelers looking for a fun place to stay.

Love this place, the best thing about it is the amazing staff who do practically everything for their guests. A home away from home, they know the city and are happy to bring you along. Other upsides are free wifi,
location close to lower main roads many good value restaurants, parking available, excursions can be booked with them.

If you want to live smack down in the middle of town, this isn't the place but taxis when going out are cheap and can be shared with the other guests and staff! Otherwise a good location for many of the peninsulas must-sees.

Depending on what type of hostel you're looking for this could be great. I was often looking for a quiet place to sleep and unfortunately found that challenging here. Usually the partying would stop at about 11:30pm-12:00am, except for one night where it lasted until about 3am. But if you do want to party you'll find a friendly atmosphere here.

We stayed at the satellite house down the street from the main GE house. First, the woman that worked there was wonderful - she was like everyone's house mother. And some of the other guests were equally wonderful - charming, engaging and helpful to us foreigners. In terms of facilities, the place itself was grimy and needed some deep and serious cleaning, as well as a coat of paint. The shared bathrooms were grimy and the carpeting needed replacing. The kitchen is small, though adequate and it was really helpful to have access to the washing machine while staying there. So that is the good. But there was also bad: the house next door to us played the tv very loud and very late at night, making sleep difficult at times. Unfortunately for us some of the people that stayed there were a problem. For a couple of nights someone was chain-smoking in the front room right beside us. We kept smelling smoke, but couldn't tell from where until our last day when we saw the guy open the window and smoke in the room. On another night two different couples came in and used the house as a way to have a cheap 'quickie'. They were both noisy and left after two hours. Sigh. I suggest that the owner/operators consider arranging to have someone on staff there 24 hrs to prevent this kind of behaviour. We were expecting a backpackers and sort of got a flophouse. Even though we really liked the staff, they leave at 4pm and after that all civilized behaviour seemed to be off. Too bad....
