33 South Backpackers
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 5, 2009

33 South really isn't just a bed for the night. For us it was 120 ZAR/night, but the three of us wanted to share a room so we definitely think we got a good deal. It has all the commodities a back packer would expect from 21st century accommodation: wi-fi, three bathrooms, a fully-fitted kitchen and a newly opened bar. The management employs local staff with a strong knowledge of SA and the local area so you'll be sure to be kept entertained. The rooms are based on themes around South Africa and excitingly decorated accordingly, with more than enough storage space in each.

The service from the always on-hand friendly staff was second-to-none - low cost meals cooked by them were available every evening, and going out with them after their shift in the Observatory area was not uncommon either. The staff work on a trust principle, so after the deposit for the first night is paid everything goes on tab.

The location was good, and there are a few bars in the local vicinity; a supermarket and train station are within a 2-minute walk. There is also ample car parking available in the area too for a 50 Rand refundable deposit. Travellers should bare in mind that this lodge is on the outskirts of the city centre as opposed to being in the CBD itself - that said it's only 20 minutes or so by car.

Do yourself a favour and stay here. If you're backpacking it's the ONLY place you want to stay, and even if you're not but you're on a budget you cant go far wrong at 33 South.
It's located in Obs - a funky district in Cape Town (where I now live!) filled with great cafes and boutiques, a couple of supermarkets and a train station about 1 minutes walk from the backpackers.
Rooms here are excellent. Clean, spacious, extra wide bunks and nice linen that doesn't make you cringe when you get in at night! Private rooms are available. All are individually decorated and are really funky.
Safety is a top priority and you'll be given a code for your door and a key for your cupboard AND you set your own safe code.
Breakfast is included (bonus as includes chocolate muffins!) and of course you can buy your own food and store it and cook it using the kitchen amenities. Braais (BBQ's) are a regular occurance for an extra charge.
Only downside was the maid continuouslly asking me for money.
