“A diamond in the middle of the rain forest!!”
Reviewed October 1, 2009

My wife and I spent only two nights at Cockatoo Hill Retreat; had we known what a fabulous place it would turn out to be we would probably have spent our entire two week Australian vacation here and in the Daintree Rainforest. As everyone else has reported Carmen and Tricia were amazing hosts. Just one small example – one evening I expressed a desire to view the Southern Cross constellation (easy to do here with the nights being almost totally dark and the stars brilliant) and wandered out of our tree house to do so. You can’t imagine my surprise when I found the pathway luminated by a trail of luminaria. Carmen has a wealth of knowledge regarding the entire area and her advice was always spot on as to the best beaches, tours, hiking trails, and hamburgers. My wife and I have traveled extensively though out the world and we’ve not found a more enjoyable place to spend our time while away from home. We highly recommend multiple nights at the Cockatoo Hill Retreat to soak in the wonders of the rainforest you will not be disappointed

This B/B is a one off.
Carmen (and helper) are the perfect hosts. A wonderful treehouse, ( there are 4) very private, clean, elegant- helpful hostess in planning our trips, also great local fresh fruit breakfasts, and as one evening after a long day out we bought a picnic to eat on our balcony----Carmen provided everything we needed , plates/cutlery even candles!!
This was the best place we stayed during a 4 week trip..

We spent an idyllic week at the Riverside Retreat with our two small children (age seven and four.) It was just ideal for us; quiet and gorgeous, comfortable and wild.

The area has to be seen to be believed; it's got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world, with intact rainforest down to the ocean. There's miles of empty beaches and lots of low-key activities; we went on guided walks in the forest, kayaking, and snorkelling on the reef. Carmen was eager to help us plan activities; she knows everyone and called around to find out the best day to go snorkelling and recommended her friend to go horseback riding.

The Daintree/Cape Trib area is almost like an island, which I didn't understand beforehand. The coast road to the north towards Cooktown is 4WD only, there are no roads to the west, and the ocean is to the east. So the only link to the rest of the world is via ferry across the Daintree River. South of the Daintree is sugar cane country and the transition from settled ag land to wild rainforest is pretty dramatic. It's confusing, because "Daintree" can refer to the national park, the region, the river, or the town of Daintree, which is a nice sleepy farming town south of the river. It's hard for me to imagine that there are better places to stay in the area than this place. It's a real find.

The house is in a spectacular setting with lovely grounds and views. It's utterly private. There's a long, stately palm-lined driveway and big mowed lawns that kept our kids occupied for hours on end. We spent a lot of time lazing in the hammock and swimming in the creek; having your own jungle pool is pretty cool. (Well, actually, pretty cold.)

Maybe if you don't like the idea of staying in the rainforest and living off the grid (the house has solar PV panels with generator backup) you might not like it there. But if you're okay without hair dryers -- oh, just go.

We settled into a pattern of eating breakfast and dinner at the house and having lunch out, which was a nice rhythm; the kids had their familiar foods for breakfast (this counts for a lot) and the kitchen was well-equipped. We used the grill on the porch, too; the local grocery had basic supplies (biodynamic milk!), plus on Carmen's recommendation we shopped for groceries on the drive up. After eating too many meals out before we got to Daintree, having the option to eat "at home" was quite a relief.

Carmen was a lovely hostess; she was always ready to help but left us alone. I really felt like we were visiting a friend we hadn't met before.

My wife and I chose to say at Cockatoo Hill Retreat after reading the tripadvisor reviews. We were met at reception by our wonderful host Carmen, who welcomed us with a warm glowing smile and instantly made us feel most welcomed. After the introduction to the resort, Carmen escorted us to our tree house accommodation. The accommodation is just fantastic with everything you require to simply relax and forget about the stress of work. there is no telephone, television or music - just peace, tranquility and an opportunity to get to know your partner. the pool side area is absolutely beautiful and the view fantastic. Unfortunately for us, the weather was overcast with the occasional shower but this didn't stop us from exploring the daintree. The continental breakfast provided by Carmen and her faithful assistant, consisted of freshly made fruit salad, cereals, locally produced tea and plunger coffee and a variety of breads - an ample feast to kickstart your day. My wife and I spent two of the most relaxing and enjoyable days and nights that we can recall for some time, all made possible my our most endearing host Carmen - thank you .

We just returned from an amazing 10-year anniversary trip to Australia. Visiting the majestic Daintree area and staying three nights at the Cockatoo Hill Retreat was a definite highlight. We're a well traveled couple and this is the best boutique property at which we've ever stayed. Carmen and Patricia made us feel right at home and went out of their way to make our stay a fabulous experience. The accommodations were beautiful, the views breathtaking. It was a romantic, inspiring setting for relaxation and rejuvenation as well as a convenient location for taking in everything from hiking in the 135 million year old rainforest to diving the Great Barrier Reef. Carmen was very helpful in recommending and booking tours and dinner reservations for us. Everything we tried, we loved. We highly recommend a stay here and will treasure our own memories for years to come.

Carmen - You are an amazing hostess with a beautiful property. Thank you.

My wife and I stayed at Cockatoo Hill for 2 nights and our stay couldn't have been better (perhaps clearer skies or a longer stay might have been nice though). Carmen and Patricia were the most wonderful hosts and our time at Cockatoo is one of the most memorable parts of our honeymoon. There are many options for accomodations in the Daintree and I haven't seen them all but I can't imagine that many are nicer than Cockatoo. It's setting on top of the Daintree, overlooking the forest with the water as a backdrop is remarkable. Each cabin at Cockatoo sits up above the canopy and because they are separate you feel the privacy. Aside from the invidividual cabins, the rest of the grounds is also beautiful. The zero edge pool, landscaping and dining area are all extremely well done and add to the ambiance.

Plan to spend a few days in the area as there really are quite a handful of things to do. We went on a wilderness walk with Cooper Creek Wilderness. Prew was a fantastic guide and we learned a lot about the world'.s oldest rainforest; we even saw a family of cassowaries and a bearded dragon.

If you are looking for a place to chill out and feel the force of nature around you, this is it. Simple yet elegant accommodation in the tree house, views across the green canopy and misty vales to the ocean, sunrise and moonrise from the balcony or bed. A fabulous breakfast of local organic fruit and to-die-for homemade jams. Carmen and Patricia are the consumate hosts and ever ready to provide advice on the local dining scene, rainforest activities or even the creek levels! And the pool is great for just feeling like you are on the edge of the world.

Thanks for a wonderful experience.
