“Fabulous family vacation”
Reviewed August 4, 2012

Absolutely amazing family vacation destination for those looking to get away and spend true quality time together. The lodge is located on a beautiful island along the French River which offers breathtaking views at every turn. My wife and I were looking for a perfect family vaction destination that would allow us, and our four children ages 12 to 4, to get away and just spend some great time together and we found it...of all the family trips we have taken, this is the one that we'll continue to talk about for years to come. Where to begin?...First, the owner and staff. This isn't your average staff...upon arrival, you quickly begin feeling like family vice a customer, and they are eager to ensure that your needs are met. The cottages are beautiful and rustic, and offer screened porches (critical for Canadian summers)...we spent many hours every night playing games and having fun while listening to the bird songs echoing off of the river. While it is a fishing lodge (Dads...the fishing is amazing!!), and fishing is its primary activity, we had a great time hiking along trails, canoeing, and swimming when we weren't fishing...the lodge even offers an Xbox and games for the older children when they need their electronic fix. The meals: Superb!! Meals are taken in the lodge at set times and there is a variety of menu options offered during each meal...staff readily caters to specific needs. Don't think restaurant...meal times quickly become an extended family event, with all of the guests talking and discussing their day...again, great family atmosphere. To wrap up this review, it has been two months since our trip and we are all still talking about it...even my 4-year old daughter who usually has a short-term memory. We can't wait to get back!!

In 50+ trips to Ontario and Manitoba fishing, the all around service at Chaudiere is the best I have experienced. Everything consideration is promptly responded to. Steve has done an excellent job.

Paradise on the French River. Need I say more? What a beautiful piece of property with breath-taking views. The staff go way above the call of duty to make the guests happy. Great food, great fishing and a great time. So relaxing and so entertaining. It was a perfect way to re-charge the batteries. I would recommend this heaven on earth to anybody. I will visit the Chaudiere Lodge forever. It is the perfect getaway and real treat for anybody - not just fishermen!

Room Tip: All rooms are spacious and comfortable

Lodge has 5 star fishing lodge rating. I learned a five star rating for a fishing lodge is a lot different than a 5 star hotel or resort. The lodge was opened in 1909 and is in a great location. They have a great staff. The owner was friendly but for some reason was very disorganized when we were there for whatever the reason.. One of their fishing guides Patrick was one of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. The accommodations are spartan with what I considered poor beds.. The food is ample and what I assume fishermen on vacation must like volume rather than quality. Overall I would return but with a lot different expectations than for a five star resort.

Room Tip: Try to get a closed in porch because of the bugs and get a cabin close to the water.

This is our third trip to chaudiere and we are always amazed by the incredible beauty and scenery of the lodge and surrounding islands. The service and foodd is spectacular and the fishing is great. I didn't even like fishing but went out and was busy catching them all day. Steve is the owner and he makes all his guests feel incredibly welcome and comfortable. The food is outstanding and the only downside is that you might gain weight. There is an abundance of delicious food at every meal and the service is very personable and they always strive to make each guest feel special. They know your name on the first day and will remember you from year to year. Do the guided fishing excursion that includes a shore lunch with all of the fish that you catch. What an incredible experience!! Go to chaudiere and even if you don't like to fish it's utopia. You'll love it!

This was our second time to Chaudiere Lodge. There's a group of us, 7 this year, all family. We use the trip to fish but also just catch up, drink and eat. We take 2 cottages - one is housekeeping which is great if you want to make some of your own meals, and the other cottage is basically for sleeping and sitting. We all congregate in the housekeeping cottage where we have the fridge full with food and drink. Boats are in great shape, and guides are available - we always allocate one day for guided fishing, 2 boats, 2 guides. The lodge arranges it all. Best advice is to load an app that will provide map of the lakes and rivers - Steve, who runs the place, can then point out areas where we might have a better shot at catching - bass, pike, walleye. Dining room option is excellent - good food, good price. We'll be back. And Steve and staff do try to make it right for us all the time.

Room Tip: Take the housekeeping cottage - they only have one - allows you to have more flexibility with dining...
