“Good hotel in a quiet place”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

1. The hotel has an excellent location with great views
2. Modern and well maintained rooms
3. The rooms have a wood burning Bukhari but no electric heaters. Bukharis need to be fuelled with wood every 15 to 20 minutes
4. Helpful staff at the resort
5. The restaurant has extremely limited vegetarian food e.g. they did not have a tomato &
cucumber salad. Quite strange.

We loved this hotel. We had a comfortable room with a little wood stove to keep us warm at night. They also provided hot water bottles to help when it was cold, but we were plenty warm. An American contractor had worked on the plumbing here, and the shower was great. The staff was very helpful. There was a small common room for dining. Be sure to try a drink called the Dragon Warmer - delicious.

Room Tip: Get a room that is on the opposite side from the parking lot - less noisy and no fuel fumes.

Dewachen Hotel is a beautiful stone-and-wood lodge that is well-designed and has huge rooms. We were assigned a corner room with a king bed, stunning views, and a large walk-in shower (no bathtub - hurray!). Staff had built a nice fire in our room while we were at dinner (there is plenty of wood so we could keep the fire burning until we went to bed) and stashed hot-water bottles in our bed.

Food was served buffet-style and was good. We liked the Druk Lager served here (we thought it better than Druk 11000 and Red Panda).

Staff was professional and well-trained. The dining room also has good views with a big wood stove for warm fires. Altitude is about 9,000 feet (roughly 3,000 meters) so mornings and nights can be cool, if not cold, depending on the time of the year.

Interesting point: Amankora, part of Aman Resorts, is nearby and costs roughly $1,400/night, but for me, Dewachen was a much, much, much better deal.

Don't miss hiking in the Phobjikha Valley. We did see the black-necked cranes twice, once on our hike and then when we were leaving by car.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room with the best views.

The good:
When we first arrived at the parking lot, a staff came to us with warmed scented towels to welcome us, which was a pleasant surprise indeed.

The high quality Chinese- and Indian-influenced dinner was very different from the previous home-cooked style dinners that we had. The noodle soup and braised chicken drumstick in soya sauce were exceptional!

We were staying at a corner room, and had a lovely view from our windows. Once the staff showed us how to set up fire using the wood shavings soaked in kerosene oil, it was very easy for us to do it ourselves. However, we did find it a bit dangerous as compared to the previous hotel and we had to add fire wood every 40 minutes or so if we wanted to keep the fire going. The fireplace was very near the bed and bathroom, so it helped to warm things up a bit. The hot water bags in the room were filled up by the staff by the time we were done with our dinner, and they certainly helped to keep us warm throughout the night.

There was consistent hot water for shower and the water pressure was strong, which was excellent! There was coffee / tea making facilities and bottled water available in the room, and the ginger tea was quite nice :)

Shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shower cap, toothbrushes, comb and soap were available, which was very adequate as compared to the other places that we had stayed in Bhutan. There was also supposed to be sewing kit, but alas, the box was empty when I wanted to use it to mend some buttons...

The bed was quite comfortable, the environment was very quiet and we stayed warmed, so we slept very well.

The not-so-good:
There were no lights at the shower area, so it could get quite dark. Also, the windows at the shower area was very low at chest level, with no curtains, and as we were staying on the ground floor, the fields were just outside, so there seemed to be a lack of privacy.

There was no electric heater in the room, which would have been useful to keep the room warm throughout the night.

In all, we enjoyed our stay here and wouldn't mind coming back here again :)

The Dewachen Hotel is an imposing sight as you drive up the hill towards it. The hotel is built in the traditional Bhutanese style with many intricate painted carvings adorning the exterior. Our room was generously proportioned with a lovely wood burning stove and great views over the pretty countryside. The restaurant also benefits from great views up the valley from its large windows. The food was reasonable although not exciting.

Well call me shallow but give me a wood burner, an unlimited supply of wood and a man to come along in the evening to check the stove was still burning and I am totally smitten. The room was warm and cosy. Hard to leave it to go for dinner. We loved this hotel. Yes the lights are dim, the electric supply erratic, there is no tv or wifi (remember this area only recently got connected to the main electric supply), but the food is good, the views wonderful and did I mention there is a wood burner in your room?

I can't comment on value as we stayed here as part of our Bhutan package.

Situated on the hillside of Phobjikha valley one has from all rooms a fantastic view on the valley. The hotel seems to be about 10 years old . During its lifetime obviously very little money has been invested in its maintenance. The rooms are very spacious with practical furniture. But the laminate floor in the room was ruined, one could stumble upon a broken patch of it. The bathroom was clean, the shower needless large but not practical. The restaurant was not satisfactory, the staff there was rather unfriendly (maybe because of the invasion of a large and very noisy group of Chinese tourists). Some of the meals offered were no really warm: an uncomfortable place ! During my stay there was a long lasting power failure in the valley. But the hotel turned on its generator only during the meal times, not some times before when a lot of new guests arrived. So maybe the hotel is the best choice in Phbjikha valley, but ...
