After a weeklong safari in Botswana we ended our trip at Coral Lodge. A remote and beautiful lodge located a few hours drive from Napula. We can't say enough good things about our stay, even four days of lost luggage only put a small damper on the experience! (many thanks to Sarah and Alex for their tireless help to retrieve my bag and the loan of clothes in the interim! :) The food is top notch, the staff attentive, friendly and very helpful, and the villas are lovely and fully appointed. Dont miss out on the wonderful snorkling in the lagoon, and a day trip to the Ilha de Mozambique. I would not hesitate to recommend Coral Lodge for anyone seeking a unique and relaxing escape.

Room Tip: Beach front or lagoon, all offer lovely views.

My wife and I traveled to the Coral Lodge for our honeymoon and the lodge surpassed our high expectations in every way. The room was gorgeous, the food was amazing, the activities were great and the staff was attentive, dedicated, friendly and always willing to go the extra mile. We really enjoyed getting to know Bart and Alex, the owners, and Sarah and Nelson, the managers, as well as the rest of the staff. They were so great to us and made us feel completely welcomed and relaxed, exactly how one should feel on their honeymoon. They definitely went above and beyond for us, arranging a dinner on the beach under the stars, a picnic lunch on a deserted island, and numerous other activities. I'm also an avid sailor and really wanted to go sailing on the dhow but unfortunately their dhow was under repair, but because they knew it was something that I wanted to do, they hired a dhow from the local village to ensure that I was able to get out there and try my hand at dhow sailing. It was really a special treat for me and it exemplifies the attention to detail and thoroughness of the staff at coral lodge.

Carlos, the chef, made some of the most tremendous meals we have ever had. It was such a luxury to enjoy his and his staffs' cooking each day. We also got to try all sorts of new foods that one can't find back in the states, like baobab ice cream. The food at the lodge is impeccable and is a real luxury.

The location is also breathtaking and I really got the feeling of getting away from all the worries of normal life and was able to totally relax. We really enjoyed the snorkeling in the lagoon as it felt like you were swimming through an aquarium. The beach stretches on for miles and the water is so refreshing! The lodge is also close to Ilha de Mocambique and taking a tour of the island was one of our favorite activities. It is uniquely endowed with tremendous history and it was both extremely educational and interesting exploring the island with Alex.

The lodge is also doing wonderful things for the local communities and you can see these projects in action and feel good about what you are supporting. We can't recommend this lodge highly enough, it is truly an amazing place and we can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Rooms looking over the ocean are great.

I have been travelling all over Africa and Coral Lodge is on of the best lodges in Africa. Friendly staff, delicious food, comfortable chalets, incredible views and lots of activities. Snorkling in the lagoon is amazing and Ilha de Mozambique can compete with Stone Town in Zazibar.

This is a very unique and interesting part of Mozambique. Its quite an adventure to get to the lodge, and the main thing to know is that its not a classic beach experience but a unique, historical and cultural experience too.
The lodge itself offers a 'barefoot luxury' experience with fresh seafood and enough activities not to get bored and photo opportunities for any traveller including snorkelling, shipwreck diving, visits to the local village and to historical ruins and the opportunity to catch tuna and then learn how to make sashimi!
The logistics of getting there is quite an adventure, not dissimilar to some places and includes a direct flight from Joburg or Nairobi, but then there is still a 2h30 road transfer to the Island of Mozambique (on good roads) and then either a very bumpy hour road trip around the peninsula to the lodge or an hour dhow trip in sometimes choppy water across the bay to the lodge. If you are travel weary ask to be taken on the speedboat trip which only takes 20 minutes. If you're a nervous traveller, request the road transfer.

Room Tip: Half the chalets are on the beach with seaviews but the other half face the small lagoon and inland...

We enjoy travel and were unsure what to do for the summer of 2012. So we asked our tour operator to provide four options; one for Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. We were really inspired by the African option....Coral Lodge in Mozambique. With vague memories of the civil war ending in the early 1990's, the country is looking to build its tourism trade with the help of adventurers supporting this development. Bart and Alex Otto are one such couple who have built a 5 star haven of peace, tranquility and relaxation at Coral Lodge whilst also encouraging activities and culture for those who want a little more action from a beach holiday.

To pinpoint the highlights of our trip is really tough. We had a great 10 day break and managed to:
- Snorkel almost daily in the lagoon which was like wading into a huge tropical aquarium. My husband went on a night snorkelling adventure and raved about the difference between day and night fish activity.
- Scuba dive in the coral reef off Ilha de Mozambique. We were both novices, but with one on two tuition with the diving instructor employed by the lodge, we quickly felt confident to get into the open Indian Ocean.
- Take a guided trip to the local village of Cabaieras Pequena. All the staff are recruited and trained from the local villages and provide a vivid insight into both their culture and daily lives. Equally, Ilha de Mozambique is an absolute must for any visitor to the area. The history and the culture in which the island is steeped is palpable. The residents of both the island and the local villages are both tolerant and welcoming of visitors from Coral Lodge. Through Bart and Alex, Coral Lodge has brought employment and electricity to the local villages, of which they seem very grateful and respectful.
- Enjoy a dhow boat trip to an uninhibited island to be provided with a beach picnic and a wonderful sunset champagne return trip.
- Kayak through the mangroves watching the wonderful bird life of the lagoon.
- Relax into a variety of spa treatments, with the pinnacle being two masseuses giving me a relaxing body massage on the last night before returning home.
- Eat the most wonderful seafood..from carpaccio of tuna, lobster salad, local kingfish all of which is cooked to perfection by Carlos and his team.
- Walk for miles on sandy beaches that appear to be made from icing sugar.

For clarification, the accommodation at Coral Lodge is absolutely first class and the management team are the most helpful, friendly and acco modating that you could expect.

Without doubt, we would recommend Coral Lodge. It truly is Paradise Found.

We went for a long weekend away from the kids and found an extremely relaxed, laid back lodge where we could relax on the beach, enjoy wonderful meals (some of the best in Mozambique!) and great service. I would definitely return. We went diving off of ilha which was amazing and our dhow trip to ilha (30 minutes) was great. Very easy to get too but you feel like youre at the end of the world. Definitely recommended!

Room Tip: pick the rooms on the ocean - view is amazing

This little paradise of sheer luxury located only 2 hours from Napula airport in North Mozambique offers the traveller an un-expected combination of high quality service, beautfiful design villa's, outstanding service of specially trained local staff and haute cuisine based on local fish and shell fish. The Dutch owners truly mastered the art of perfection in the interior design of the lodges but also in the choice of this venue located on the shores of probably Mozambique's most beautiful coast line. There are luxury boots that can take visitors to nearby deserted islands or the famous Mozambique Island harboring a 15th century Portugese fortress. One can snorkel or scubba dive with trained instructors. I have visited many places in the world but this resort beats it all. Highly recommended!!!!!
