White Pearl Resorts, Ponta Mamoli
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Zitundo
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 15, 2013

We recently returned to the UK after getting married back home in South Africa. The first leg of out honeymoon was 8 days spent at White Pearl Resort, Ponta Mamoli...

What can I say?

Overall we were extremely impressed...

The helicopter transfer is definitely worth it! Great views and much better than spending 2 hours on the road from Maputo vs 30 mins in the chopper.

The resort itself is lovely...nice and small so not overly crowded which is probably one of the biggest attractions. Very well laid out and quite a bit of thought has gone in with the design and layout of the chalets...

Our chalet was absolutely stunning and very private which is a big plus.

The staff is probably one of the resorts greatest assets - all of them were exceptionally friendly.
A special mention to Santos (our butler), Amos, Joel, Casper, Lorenzo, Jasse, Maria and Roberto...

These people went out of their way to make our honeymoon truly memorable!

The beaches are clean, the seawater sparkling blue and warm and there are plenty of chill out areas to relax...

A few minor things which would prohibit me from giving the resort 5 stars:

Agree with the previous reviewer that the surcharge which was charged for the New Years dinner was not advised of beforehand. Not too fussed as it was a great party and I can understand there were some additional expenses, but it did seem a bit odd that we only picked it up retrospectively (when I received my bill). Not a big issue and I didn't object to the additional cost, but it would have been good if they advised us beforehand of the additional costs associated with the New Years party!

Our food experience overall was great, so not in agreement with the previous reviewer and we stayed for 8 nights so I think we should be able to offer a balanced opinion. However, I do agree that our steaks were not cooked to perfection the one night - overcooked...

Drinks are expensive - if you go to a 5* resort you expect it, but they are a bit silly with some of the prices ($175 for a bottle of Veuve, $60 for 375ml of Jameson).

We understood the laundry was complimentary, only to find out it wasn't after we handed in quite a bit. At $16 a T-shirt, it is expensive...but when I did raise this with the management they removed the laundry from the bill without any fuss or issue - which we greatly appreciated!

As the location is remote you need to be aware it will be a very relaxing holiday as there aren't that many activities available. We were aware of this and we wanted a very relaxing holiday to wind down as the 2nd part of our honeymoon was much more active, but steer clear if you are keen on an active activity based holiday. Note: We are not divers, so if you dive it could be a bit different. The snorkeling at the outer reef is great though - part of the dolphin trip and even if you do not interact with the dolphins (i.e. they might not be keen on it) I would recommend the dolphin trip for the snorkeling at the outer reef on its own.

As suggested to the resort kite surfing and windsurfing would be a great addition for the resort with the calm seas and light and steady wind.

Overall we had an absolutely great holiday and we will recommend it to friends and if possible we will return for one of our future anniversaries!

Many thanks to White Pearl!!

Room Tip: Room 19 is great if you're on Honeymoon...very private, but quite far from the center of the res...

We spent 3 nights at this getaway resort as and end to our 2 week honeymoon. We were ready to relax but this was too remote for us. We did enjoy the 1 night of our stay to unwind from our very packed honeymoon. Don't get me wrong, it is a nice resort along the coastline, however both my husband and I left unimpressed. We are from New York so we are spoiled by excellent restaurants and service and were looking forward in experiencing what this resort had to offer. The food and service was average at best with the exception of our butler Hilario and waiter Roberto they were both excellent and a pleasure. In regards to the food, the steaks were chewy and under seasoned, the calamari was chewy and bland also. As a and added bonus a field mouse (they come out when it rains) joined us for dinner. He was kind of cute! But not so cute when your eating. To make matters worse the air conditioning unit broke and the coolant spilled all over my suitcase and clothing. We were there over new years and we already paid for a expensive stay, and then they added on an additional 100 per person for the new years dinner/party. We left on a sub par note to say the least. We have stayed at much nicer resorts and this would not be a place that we would recommend or stay again.

The Pro's: Helicopter ride, unspoiled beaches, outdoor shower looking over the ocean, Hilario and Roberto
The Con's: Food, bugs bugs and more bugs, lack of activities

Room Tip: We stayed in room number one which has beach access. If giving the choice stay in a higher room for...

Your recent review on your stay at White Pearl Resorts has come to our attention. Firstly, we would like to thank you for taking the time to post your review. We certainly take your experiences as posted in a very serious light and would like to thank you for bringing this to our attention not only to highlight but to make a difference in our guest experience on the ground.

As the resort is situated at the beach and within an eco-friendly environment, one does find on occasion various insects and small animals close to the resort. I too would be alarmed to find a mouse at the dining area and as a result we have placed it on “high alert”- with housekeeping informed to watch out for bugs and the like specifically after it rains. We apologise for any discomfort this may have caused.

Our maintenance team have reviewed the air conditioner and have managed to fix the problem.

With regard to the New Years Eve surcharge, a communication was sent to all travel agents advising of the surcharge in order to host the festivities such as the Themed Countdown Party with a special menu, fireworks, DJ, dance floor with lighting, champagne toasting and memorable New Years wish lanterns. We trust that the surcharge has become more understandable in light of these additions over the Festive Season.

Please do accept our sincere apologies that the resort did not meet with your expectations. Please feel free to contact us directly if you travel to Mozambique again so that we can take care of you, ensure you have a memorable stay and enjoy the service we are renowned for.

Regards

White Pearl is one of the best getaway resorts in the world. Out of Africa it surely puts Mozambique on the map. The excellence, the staff (Tricia, Santos our personal butter and Georgio), the massage therapists, the food, the comfort, the ambiance, the private unspoiled beach, the sparkling sea water, was memorable for years to come. The rooms are exquisite, everything and more you would expect from a 5* resort. We were there for 2 nights, and insisted on extending our stay but it was already fully booked. The Manager Sam and her team are doing an excellent job. Just to inform you that during peak seasons its on the high side. All said and done, we with the whole family loved our stay immensely. If you plan on driving from SA, please please use a 4x4 and have their number on speed dial for directions so you don't get frustrated. There is no GPS signal. Thank you White pearl, see you soon.

Just spent 2 nights at White Pearl. Large clean comfortable suites with a private plunge pool, great views and endless beaches. You can walk for hours on soft white sand and never see another soul! Very friendly staff and excellent food. Access from Maputo is by a 20 minute helicopter flight down the coast, a treat in itself. The resort can also be reached by 4x4 from the South African coast via Kosi Bay but I recommend the heli transfers. Rooms have the look and feel of east coast beach houses and are connected by a wooden walkway through the sand dunes. All rooms face the ocean. This is not a pretentiousness over the top resort but a laid back place to relax and enjoy the solitude. Excellent diving venue as well.

Room Tip: All rooms are built in the dunes. Front row have direct beach access, top row have best views.

This 5star new resort is excellent value for money. We stayed for 10 days with friends and the bonus was a helicopter ride ,exploring this unique unspoiled wilderness
excellent food..friendly attention, but the best was the diving
The Pinacles, one of the top 10 dive spots in the world is a small pinacle at 40 metres..hammerheads and zambezi bulls are frequent close encounters in these impossibly blue clear and 26c waters, under expert guidance of excellent dive masters

This is the ideal place for your romantic getaway, with diving as a bonus

Room Tip: All the rooms are sea view .

When we were recommended the White Pearl Resort I looked on bathe Internet but couldn't find too much information about the place. Over the years more information arose which meant we knew a little but not much about where we were going.

The resort is beautiful and right on the beach though it is easily accessible by the front chalets and is a small walk for the others. The 2 bars have everything and the resort is well set out.

The chalet has everything you need with its own pool and sun deck, outdoor shower which are now being covered for more privacy and a setting area with great views. We had our own butler though we didn't really use him.

The overall review is 99.99% excellent. The food is good and we recommend the prawns for lunch. We spent most our time relaxing by the pool and in the evenings played the local board game 'ntchuva'

The sea is warm though I felt a strong rip current so had to be careful. We saw a turtle nesting on the pristine beach and the locations were definitely a bit of paradise.

Our concern was the helicopter and the small amount of luggage allowed. Yes it was mentioned to us but when we flew there being the only people on board we were allowed to take everything. As the return was full we had to had over our bags the night before and we picked them up when we got back to Maputo. Not the ideal situation but a small price to pay for staying at such a lovely location.

We didn't do any dolphin watching but there is diving available and the team there were very helpful.

The resort is for couples and I would recommend the front 6 chalets.

Thanks to Lisa, Amos, Joel, Fernando, Dru and the others for all your help.

Three girlfriends & I went to White Pearl to celebrate my birthday and have a bit if a spoil. And spoilt we were: 4 nights, 2 massages each in our rooms. Never once saw housekeeping yet our room was always perfect! The beach is never ending and the ocean so gorgeous (especially if one's used to the more chilly Cape Town oceans). Illario was out personal butler & he was gracious, unassuming, discrete and efficient. The seafood, haloumi & pasteis with custard were phenomenal. An excellent getaway for friends, couples, honeymooners and (perhaps more mature) families. Would go back in a heartbeat!
