“A great Viognier 2011”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2013 via mobile

One of the pleasures of traveling is to sample the local wines you cannot get back home. Coming from California we have a wide variety of wines to choose from so we tend to be picky with our wines. We were very favorably impressed with Obsidian's Viognier 2011. You can taste the freshness of the environment with the sophistication of French Oak added. While the prices of wines in general are high in New Zealand we liked this wine well enough to buy two bottles, one to enjoy on our B&B private deck watching the sunset and one to take home.

“Gorgeous Wines, Very Helpful Owner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2013

The wine tasting was done very well with water, cheese and crackers to clear the palette afterwards/in between. 'The Mayor' and the Syrah were exceptional. The wines were the best we found on the short tour we had that day (Mudbrick, Casita Miro, Cable Bay and Obsidian.

“Absolutely Brilliant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013

I recently visited Obsidian with a couple of mates, planning on staying for about 30 minutes & then moving on to the the next Vineyard. After two hours we finally managed to drag ourselves away ( after trying 10 different wines ), altho I think we could quite happily have started again & tryed all 10 a second time. The wines were great, ( very difficult to choose a best ...altho I ended up buying a bottle of the Obsidian, so I certainly must have liked that one ), very few I didn't enjoy & even found a Rose' & a Viognier ( neither of which I generally like ) that were very drinkable.
While the wines were great, the service was fantastic!!!!!
What really made the visit was the way we were looked after by Janet, Pete & Francine. Very knowledgable & very friendly. We really appreciated the way we were looked after during our time there.
On leaving Waiheke ( after visits to 7 vineyards, as well as several bars, restaurants & cafe's )we all "individually" chose Obsidian as the highlight of the weekend.
Well worth a visit. !!!

“An old-school wine tasting experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

An old school cellar door experience and excellent for it. If you a a wine lover and want to escape the melee of the many restaurants on the island that appear to have wineries tacked onto them, then Obsidian is for you. We were really impressed by the flagship brand. 'The Mayor' - a completely home grown blend - and 'The Obsidian' - more traditional Bordeaux style blend - were both superb. But the pick for us was the Viognier (11), clearly the best of that varietal that we tried on Waiheke.

“Beautiful wine - beautiful location!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2012

Obsidian has had excellent wine reviews and they certainly lived up to expectations. Staff are helpful and knowledgable, the location worked really well on the vineyard trail. They are well set up for groups and even laid on complimentary cheese and biscuits.Thank you!
