“Memorable for all the right reasons”
Reviewed January 8, 2008

We have just returned from a six night stay at the Tulip of Ceylon which was organised by a friend and travelling companion. Before leaving for Sri Lanka I searched for reviews of the Tulip on the web which without exception proved to be full of praise - being a sceptic, that worried me! The truth is that they were all accurate as we had a genuinely memorable time, as much from the natural welcome and hospitality from Jan and his staff as to the surroundings.
This was my first visit to Sri Lanka and Jan's local knowledge and contacts ensured we made the most of our time. There are a number of standard excursions available, such as to the Elephant Orphanage (a bit commercial but still a wonderful experience), trip to the local village etc. We opted to go on a few of our own trips and Jan was able to offer invaluable advice and make arrangements.
The Tulip is unique in my mind and you forgive some of the rougher edges (a sharp few concrete edges and occasional flaking paintwork for example) for the experience and surroundings.
The food is a high point with many unusual recipes and ingredients (banana flower curry anyone?)
The security situation was obviously on our mind but our assessment was that we are not targets and the airport is removed from Colombo city where many incidents happen. There is a security presence and some risk but no more than other countries I have visited recently
We will soon be returning to Sri Lanka and certainly to the Tulip of Ceylon

The Hotel is owned and run by Jan who is Dutch and welcomed us on arrival and explained how he is trying to work with the local people.

The hotel is like an Oasis in the forest within easy reach of Kandy (26km) and ½ hour from the elephant orphanage by Tuk Tuk

There are plenty of opportunities to explore the locality by foot or Tuk Tuk and the highlight of our stay was to return from the orphanage on an elephant. We also had the chance to bathe with her in the river which runs past the Tulip at the bottom of the hotel grounds.

The staff could not be more friendly and welcoming, we felt that we had made friends with them all by the time we left.

The food is wonderful and vegetables are organically grown in the hotel gardens.

Jan is able to help organise onward trips and excursions, we found the people he recommended to be excellent.

It is difficult to describe how good it was we planned to stay for 5 days and stayed for 8 and we intend to return. I can not recommend highly enough this hotel and the wonderful team who made our stay there an experience of a lifetime.
