Beach at Lake Balaton is very different from U.S. beaches: You put your towels down in the grass, under big trees. Flowers planted everywhere. The lake itself is very shallow, and it looks like people are standing up a mile out, tossing balls around. Recommend the local fast-food Langos, filled with cheese or covered in sugar; a kind of fry-bread. Has the usual boardwalk-type shops selling sunscreen, trinkets. Lockers available for your wallet, other valued items. Went for a boat ride around the lake, then beach time. Great time, enjoyed the day.

The Lake Balaton is not just a lake, but a sea for Hungarians. Being the largest freshwater lake in Europe, and spanning across four resort towns and tens of villages on both its north and south shores, the Balaton mesmerizes not only the tourists but the Mother Nature herself. The summer water temperature of around 25°C invites even non-swimmers to learn swimming. The hills around the lake are the right places to be to admire the beauty of the lake at sunset. Biking along the Balaton, facilitated by bike lanes, allows exploring the boundaries of the lake and also the nearby countryside. The quality of water, safety and child-friendliness on the beaches are all simply excellent. The eye-catching resort town of Balatonfüred, the city where I stayed during my holidays, is yet another addition to the lake’s glory. A day-visit to the volcanic mountain, Badacsony is essential to check out the popular wineries of the region. Besides the magnificence of Balaton, the Hungarian cuisine, the friendly-nature of people, and good-enough transportation are all sufficient to say, just as the title says “It’s a sea (of happiness) around a lake”.

I went some time ago; the weather was beautiful and the prices were affordable but some of the coffee shops and hotels needed a bit of a renovation. Otherwise a nice place to visit!

We come here every single summer for at least a month. My son goes out fishing every morning and stays out until dinner. We stay in a town called Fonyod and have an awesome summer.

Beautiful lake for relaxing, good get-away for both couples and families.
Tasty Hungarian snacks can be found in the small towns along the lake!
