“Lovely break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2014

We stayed for two nights in April.

We loved everything about the hotel, from the staff, rooms and food the Chateau provided a peaceful and luxurious stay. We especially thought the bar man was charming and an excellent advert for the hotel.

Couple of comments which would make this place truly magical....the service in the restaurant could be more attentive. On our first night we did not get a drink for 30 minutes....they also need to have a few wines on the menu that are reasonably priced, there was nothing under 50 euro. One night we had the set menu and the second night we went a la carte....the set menu dishes were significantly smaller than the a la carte dishes which I think is a little disappointing!

If you get a chance please try and stay here.

Previously wrote an excellent review about this hotel.
Returned in autumn/winter for a second visit and was vastly disappointed.
The weather was atrocious, which brought to our attention the lack of comfortable seating indoors. There is a bar area, which is plush in appearance but not laid back enough for a rainy afternoon. For the few days we stayed we had to look for someone to serve us coffee when we sat in the bar area; seemed very short of staff.
Praised the food last time and so looked forward to eating here again. What a disaster.
Considering on each visit the clientele has been mainly English, on the first night there was no English translation of the menu. This caused huge delays in the service with only one waitress able to translate and explain to nearly every diner what was on the menu. So it took about one hour before we could order... and that's bearing in mind we were one of the first diners to arrive
One man complained; tired from a long journey from Italy so it made the evening fractious.

We were in no rush so enjoyed some champagne and watching another young waitress appearing dismayed and disorganised by the demands of so many English visitors!

The evening got even worse when some family arrived with screaming children. Our patience wore very thin because by now we were hungry and tired too. My husband complained to the manager who I previously commented on. She said that she could not stop families dining with children... but of course she could if she had insisted that families dined earlier as other top establishments do. This is the same manager I complained about in a previous comment. She is not friendly or approachable. These diners were not staying in the hotel and frankly their noisy and tired children ruined the evening for many diners; seriously I am not anti-children I have my own... but I would not have youngsters dining as late as 10.00-11.00pm. I later learnt he was actually the hotel inspector... and that it was his anniversary. Shame on him; hope he is reading this. That is his problem not mine! Surely he could make it up to his wife on another night when he was not working!?

The second night went from bad to worse.

I ordered a risotto with Langoustine. When it arrived it smelled so strongly of ammonia it was almost nauseating. I tentatively ate the rice and tried a little of the fish... half wondering if the smell and taste was some kind of weird French delicacy!!?? But it was vile...even my husband could smell it across the table.

I tried to question the taste and freshness but the waitress who had done the translation the previous night suddenly couldn't understand my complaint. The menu was still not translated so the same problem existed for new diners; delays and complaints. It was the same menu so we had remembered most of it.

I left the very expensive risotto insisting the fish was off. But guess what, I was still charged even though it smelled and tasted strongly of ammonia, it was truly disgusting. I have not eaten shell fish since... it was that bad.

The manageress did little to help her busy and overworked staff. She swanned in and chatted to the hotel inspector... laughing and drinking while the service fell apart around her; she certainly doesn't believe in rolling up her sleeves and helping out! Again, I clarify she pays little attention to her other guests. And I still claim she is not that friendly to non-French people!

I had the single room last time... which was very pleasant. This time we opted for a room with a balcony. A nice and clean room... but the toilet is in a cupboard, which for couples is hardly romantic. Some lightbulbs not working... so couldn't read at night etc.

No one to help with baggage at certain times of the day.

Hence, this was definitely our last visit to this place. We have already visited our new preferred place.

Room Tip: I think the single room is by far nicer than the room with a balcony.

If you want to be experience a bit of luxury this is the place. Sumptuous rooms with fantastic views of the grounds. Food good.champagne prices good not as expensive as you think when having a bottle with dinner, compared to what you would pay in Britain. Nice quiet village. Don't be overawed by the Bentley's as nd Aston martins in the car park. Your never made to feel out of place jeans are just as good as a dinner suit.

Beautifully situated between Reims and Epernay, this charming chateau has well appointed rooms, helpful staff, and is equidistant to the great caves of Champagne. Situated in a peaceful village, under half an hour to Moët and Veuve Cliquot. Added plus, the dining room provided an excellent dinner and the parking area was filled with rare and top flight cars, including a '24 Rolls Royce touring car!

Room Tip: Each we saw was lovely.

We have just stayed 2 nights at Chateau De Rilly. Beautiful peaceful location surrounded by rolling vineyards and rainforest. Stayed in a terrace room well worth it if the weather is good as you have a table and chairs and 2 day beds out there with a lovely view. Rooms were well appointed and only 12 months old, bathroom large with bath and separate shower double basins.
Separate toilet room. Beds comfortable but firm. Wi Fi does not work in room but can be accessed down in the bar area. Breakfast buffet delicious. Good coffee.
We dined in the restaurant both nights. Foods and service very good, prices slightly above average but worth it. There are no other choices close by to dine in. All staff were fantastic.
Friday night they had live music and singing highly recommended.

Room Tip: Terrace room recommended

A special mention to the staff, everyone goes out of their way to be helpful and very efficient. The Château has been recently renovated and looks wonderful, it has a beautiful terrace facing a lovely fountain and the wineyards that is very romantic. Location is near to just about everything in the champagne area. There is only one thing that I feel should be in some way changed...and that is "breakfast". There is a coffee machine where you have to make your own coffee, hot chocolate or tea...which I find out of place for the price they ask for breakfast. A part from this, cleanliness and rooms are superb. We had a huge terrace facing the little town of Rilly. All in all I do recommend the hotel.

Room Tip: We had a deluxe room with terrace, on the 2nd floor (the hotel has elevator).

This Chateau has been renovated a year ago and is ideally located in the center of the small Champagne Village of Rilly-la-Montagne (15minutes by car from Reims in the direction of Epernay). In this village you have 67 small champagne farmers so a lot to taste!
The hotel has a very nice terrace and a wonderfull restaurant with a nice wine and champagne list. A magnum bottle of good Champagne (Millisième 2006) was only 81€. Menu's start at 36€ for 4 courses.
My compliments also for the staff who where always available and helping us out. They have a good relationship with a lot of Champagne farmers so you can ask them to make reservations for cellar visits and tastings.

Room Tip: Take room 203 (second floor, but there is an elevator) it has a big terrace and a splendid view. How...
