“Great place - lots of fun”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2014

This camp is located right on the Orange River - the perfect spot for a swim. The setting is wonderful, the bar is a lot of fun - great decorations. The bathrooms aren't bad although they're made from bamboo and you don't feel like you have a lot of privacy. The laundry facilities - washing tubs are incredibly dirty and near impossible to do washing in. Otherwise great place!

“An Oasis in the Desert”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2013

Background: This was the first overnight stop for our fledgling African overland tour group on our way to Namibia from Cape Town, South Africa. Named the Fiddler's Creek Bush Camp, it is operated by the Bushwhacked Outdoor Adventures in Vioolsdrif, South Africa. It is a mixed-use facility that caters both to small and large groups. We occupied OL #2, the largest spot.

PROS: The bush camp is situated by the banks of the Orange River. Nearly every activity from river rafting, canoeing, hiking, 4x4 safari drive starts off here. Being next door to the Namibian border crossing and only 150 km away from the Fish River Canyon are big pluses. The layout of the campsite is well-planned, well-maintained and equipped with some modern amenities such as a covered kitchen, countertops, running (non-potable) water for cooking and washing, 220V electricity and lighting, spacious grassy lawns for tents, large fixed tables -- all enclosed by reed fences for privacy. Other amenities include a pay-phone, coin-op filtered drinking water, a small shop, liquor bar, volley ball court, and a toilet/shower block within walking distance. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, though optional, is available if booked in advance. Service is both friendly and professional. And all these, right in the middle of a desert wilderness!

CONS: Needless to say, luxury is not its forte'. Because the campsite can accommodate up to 9 overland groups, you can imagine the noise factor and someone cursing under his breath. The toilet/shower blocks leave something to be desired: reed walls that don't block the cold wind, grungy floors that harbours what-have-you, hot water that runs out mid-shampoo and iffy privacy. Meals, if requested, require a minimum quorum to be approved.

Verdict: Look, this isn't your typical 5-star luxury hotel and it doesn't pretend to be. If luxury is what you're after, then this place is not for you. This is as "roughing it" as you can get. Better get used to it. But to have this decent campsite with modern amenities qualifies as an "oasis" in my dictionary. Excellent value for what you get. Anything cheaper and you'll be sleeping in the bush with the lions! Recommended. Grade A-minus.

“Awesome one stop camping spot!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2013

I remember going to Bushwhacked for the first time over ten years ago. My first impression was, wow, how can a place like this exist in such an inhospitable environment?

To this day it remains my absolute preferred camping spot. Amenities include, shaded grassy campsites. Each campsite has a kitchen with basin, ample work and storage space, electricity points and spot lights on your braai area, and running cold water as hot water is not necessary in the Vioolsdrift heat.

The campsite also has 2 big clean ablutions, with hot water :-) A very impressive bar cleverly built on the edge of the mighty Orange River, offers everything you would expect from a proper bar. If you look around in the bar one can just imagine all the stories that has been shared here, with bits and pieces of memorobilia hanging from the roof, never a dull moment in this bar.

Catering for big groups can also be pre - booked, with mouth watering meals prepared on the fire and nearly all the food is sourced locally as Vioolsdrift is mainly farmland.
The camsite also have a workshop on site, mainly for private use but if you have an emergency, Adam, the owner, will definetely be able to assist you.

Friendly staff, clean ablutions, lively campsite, overlander's and 4x4 haven, this campsite stands out head and shoulder above any other campsite in the area, as the undisputed leader.

Well worth a visit, or three.

“Breath taking experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013

I have done a couple of orange river trips with bushwhacked outdoor adventures and I'm always pleased with the professional crew, one get the feeling of belonging and a family environment and they really care about their clients. I would recommend this getaway to any outdoor enthused person as it is as scenic as it is an adventure, also saw some weary travelers out of the Richtersveld and seemed like the perfect stop after or before a Richtersveld trip, camp sites are very spacious with kitchen facility in each with a braai area. The bush bar is always a highlight with different tools hanging from the roof and lovely view over the river.

“Best Camping Ever!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2013

We had my birth day party there, great success. They made us a huge bond fire we had nice music great photos and a lot of fun! The bar we won't forget quickly! Great attention to detail with a whole lot of stories! Even though we where only there one night it felt like an entire weekend. Cute little bathrooms with nice HOT water! What a treat as it was quite cold on our visit and it rained a little as well. Camping sites are well laid out, grass all over and bath rooms in walking distance. Sites are nicely equipped with electricity and a sink with a tab and running water ( not drinkable tough but there is clean water for sale at the bar and at the reception area you can use your own cans and fill up with clean water for quite cheap. This is a destination I will definitely not drive past! Hope to go there in summer time for a nice relaxing weekend! And then also do some river rafting!
