Unfortunately, the castle was closed to visitors during the time I was in Ross, so I had to make do with a quick look over the fence!

What was good was that one of us is not good at walking more than 30 yards. The staff were very helpful and kind and we were allowed to park at the top of a very narrow track right next to the Castle!

We enjoyed exploring the castle with audio guides which were just the right length and detail for my 11 year old. Lots of little passages and hidey holes and a fantastic view form the top of the keep - well worth the dark and narrow climb! Staff were friendly in the shop and cafe and the scones are delicious! There is also plenty of space to sit and have a picnic while taking in the views. It is a short walk from the carpark but not too strenuous. We will definitely be back!

This is a real castle that’s seen action. English Heritage do things very well; the site is well provided with substantial walkways that allow you to explore the relevant places – the audio commentary is very informative about everyday life and attractively presented – there is adventure stretching the limits of current H&S and thanks for that! That item under discussion is the climb up the 50 ‘steep and narrow and dark’ spiral staircase to the top of the keep, the oldest part of the castle. It really is quite hairy and in a few years this sort of thing will be beyond me, so be warned! The audio guide is essential and it’s free; however, on delivery of ours one was rejected because it was on the blink and immediately we got to the castle one of the two failed completely. As it’s a considerable distance from the gatehouse to the castle this can be a serious deficit – returning is a longish slog and it takes time.

I've done a few castles in my time but had no idea this one was here. Great site and well preserved. Make sure you get a free audio tour as it adds real interest and context to the buildings.
If you can stand the climb up a narrow spiral staircase with dodgy lighting, go to the top of the keep for the most spectacular view of the valley and beyond.
