“Beautiful setting”
Reviewed August 16, 2013 via mobile

On our drive up the coast, we had to stop in for lunch based on all the reviews. Parking on a Thursday was a nightmare!!! Had to wait almost 45 min for a table. The view was so beautiful though which made the wait worth it. Ordered the Ambrosiaburger based on the reviews. It was very good. And very pricey. Service was very very slow. Never had my ice tea refilled. Not sure if I would eat here again. May try somewhere different next time.

“Thank you Jose”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

We were there last week and it was very busy. During this time of the year, it is full all the time.

We asked for some help in getting a table with a view to celibrate a special occassion. We were at Nepenthe 15 years ago and this visit to Nepenhte was something we have been looking forward to for a long time.

Jose took the time to listen. He really helped us. THANKS.

On this day there was very little fog. You could Russia from our seat over the cliff. Hamburger was OK.

The Nepenthe drink was not on the menu this time. However our server asked around with the staff and came up with the Nepenhte drink that my wife wanted to have for memories.

Just a nice day at Nepenhte.

“Good scenic bier”

The food was just ok, nothing noteworthy. All staffs in front have a good hospitality. The big thing is location, you get food with amazing view.

“Fantastic atmosphere”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

A business associate took me to dinner here as it was one of his favorite restaurants...I can see why! The view at sunset was breathtaking and the food was up to the challenge, although primarily fries and delicious burgers and sandwiches, ribs, chicken and such (you pay mostly for the view, but what a view!). Fairly decent wine selection as you might expect.

“A Big Sur tradition”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

When driving through Big Sur, we always have to stop at Nepenthe, for, if anything, a glass of wine to enjoy the gorgeous views and the quiet stillness of the place. Located high above the ocean, it usually is a bit warmer with less wind (and fog) than could the site be any closer to the water. The food is good roadhouse fare, nothing particularly memorable, but do try the Ambrosia Burger with fries, which I believe is their signature dish. The wine list is small, but features good California wines, and a full bar is available. We have always had good luck with friendly, efficient service. If the weather is good enough to dine al fresco, do so if anything for the views. But, be aware that the Stellar Jays and Scrub Jays that have been accustomed to the restaurant for decades have become very wily about swooping down and helping themselves to human food... on our most recent visit a jay swooped down and nabbed an entire hamburger patty (and bun) off of the plate of the poor, unsuspecting diner!

There is also the Cafe Kevah below the main restaurant, which is all al fresco dining and drinks, and the gift shop downstairs offers an eclectic collection of books, clothing, and other nicknacks (lots of "hippie" and New Age stuff). We usually find a few souvenirs to take home with us.

A tip for lunch: the restaurant doesn't open until 11:30am, but this is a good time to get seated without waiting. Later in the afternoon and in the evening, the large pavillion outdoors had a fire pit which is very nice to mitigate the chill while seated outdoors to dine or enjoy a glass of wine, or while waiting for your table.
