Stayed here for 2 nights on the way up the coast from LA - was a real contrast, having come from busy LA to this place. It is in a very very quiet location; some might call this boring, but it is incredibly relaxing and there is lots to do in the area if you do your research.

We stayed in a yurt - which was huge, had a very comfy bed and heating (it was pretty chilly when we were there). Staying in the yurt was a unique experience. The communal bathrooms were spotless. The breakfast consisted of cereal and yummy make-your-own waffles.

Treebones offers lunches and evening meals but we didn't eat any meals there other than breakfast so I can't comment on the meals.

I would definitely recommend Treebones to people who want a quiet and relaxing break and want to be close to nature.

What a place! If you are adventurous, love the outdoors, enjoy finer things in life, and seek a different experience than you need to check this place out. We enjoyed the uniqueness of sleeping in a large yurt with a fire place and indescribable view of the southern point of Big Sur where we witnessed a sunset while we watched whales spouting in the ocean and later soaked in the beauty of the full moon on the water. Did I mention the wonderful dinner?
We had a great hike just behind the resort and another short hike down to the ocean. We stayed for three days and two nights and never had enough time to try the pool.
Oh well I guess we can try that out on our next visit!

There are few choices in Big Sur and no real "central area" and if you want an opportunity to be close to nature and really soak in the coastal experience, this is the place to stay.

If you are the kind of person that would rather have common luxury, typical hotel /spa style experiences this is not for you.

The grounds are beautiful and the view of both the mountains and ocean are simply stunning. We stayed in Yurt 14 and enjoyed the location which was close to the main lodge, restrooms and showers. The noise from the pool was only a minor irritant and since the pool closed at 8pm not really an issue.

The yurt was beautiful, spacious and provided many comforts. The bed was cozy and very warm, there was a comfortable futon style sofa and a table w/ 2 chairs perfect for eating and playing scrabble...

We did not eat the dinners or lunch provided by at the lodge based on other reviewer comments, but many folks did. The waffle breakfasts were awesome, great coffe, and fresh orange juice.

The staff was nice though not what I would consider overly friendly. This did not detract from our experience however.

Big Sur is very spread out and this location was fine for getting to where we wanted to be to enjoy the outdoors. All in all, a fantastic experience and we will go back for sure!

I stayed at Treebones a couple of years ago and probably would not go back. First of all Treebones is on the big sur coast but pretty far south so driving at night is not very easy and personnally I'd rather be closer to the more central areas of big sur. The yurt and pool were fine- comfortable, warm etc. The common area is nice for relaxing and waffles. But the location makes this not the best---you are better of camping.

Set somewhat south of the 'big-tree' hub of Big Sur, Treebones is a wonderful base from which to explore Big Sur, loved being able to come back at days end to this peaceful retreat, in fab location away from the other lodges, vehicles & shops, to enjoy setting sun and sunrise sighting of whales heading languidly northwards. The mongolian yurts are a fun feature, thank goodness though for the heater, but the beds were not particularly comfortable, and sounds carry in the night. Not having en-suite does mean midnight tip-toeing to the ablutions but the showers and loos were very clean and you are mongolian-camping after all! The main lodge area with fire, pool and hot tub were nice places to hang out, read, swim, play games and drink californian wine! The food was so-so, the breakfast waffles a bit stodgy, i'd reccommend having stashed up on some fruit (and other snacks) sliced banana with the waffle and maple syrup went down well. So an average to good rating on most things - bumped up to very good for the excellent rating on location. I would return, better prepared, and stay longer.

This place is amazing. It is nestled in the hills of Big Sur. You stay in yurts and they are so cool. Ours had a pingpong table in it - random, but awesome. It is rustic but not like camping or anything. Treebones is truly a unique place with a gorgeous view. It is very quiet and relaxing. Perfect for a 1 or 2 night stay.

My husband and I had such an amazing time while staying at Treebones. The main building was very welcoming and had amazing views. The meals served were very tasty and convenient since "downtown" was a good drive away. The yurt was very romantic with a gas burning stove that keep us warm and cozy on the cool, coastal nights. The private deck, off the yurt, gave us a nice place to hang out and have a glass of wine and relax. We will certainly be going back to Treebones on our second honeymoon.
