Lunch at Sierra Mar was a delightful experience. We were fortunate to be able to eat on the deck at the beginning of February. What a beautiful view. The three course price fix is an absolute bargain compared to dinner. Food was fresh, visually appealing and delicious. Oysters were nicely chilled with a delicate mignonette. Perfect amount of brininess and acidity. The chefs take on bouillabaisse was unique in the fact it was basically a fish consommé with an array of perfectly cooked seafood. Dessert was a nicely selected cheese platter. I would highly recommend for a leisurely lunch with a spectacular view.

We are guests at Big Sur's spectacular Post Ranch Inn, which really is one of the most beautiful resorts in the world. The accommodations and staff are wonderful as is their spa. So when you visit their restaurant, Sierra Mar, you expect to be blown away. Indeed, for a $120 a person prix fixe menu, you ought to be. Our dinner there was really disappointing. The four course menu had really limited choices-one sea food main course item-black cod- and only two dessert choices, both chocolate (white and dark) , plus a modest four item cheese platter.

Our appetizers were innovative- sunchoke and marinated abalone, as was my asparagus soup. My abalone was a day too old, and tasted more like octopus sushi. And the puree on which the sunchoke was served was cold from the fridge, as it was for my wife's chicken main course. Both her main course and mine-a tiny rack of lamb- were overdone just enough to be dry. The server was sweet and attentive, but the kitchen basically just phoned it in.

If we'd ordered wine with our meal, the bill would have come to over $400- L'espalier or Alinea prices. There are at least four restaurants in our home town of Charlottesville that outperform Sierra Mar. Their breakfast buffets are wonderful, with caring and attentive staff. But for one of the most expensive resorts in the world, one expects at least Michelin One Star dining. Management needs to take this seriously, as it damages the resort's reputation. We're coming back to Post Ranch, but until things improve in the kitchen, we'll have dinner elsewhere.

This is nothing short of a taste of Heaven. Words cannot truly express the greatness of every aspect of the experience you will have at Post Ranch Inn.

We had our Valentine's day luncheon at Sierra Mar, and were delighted. The Post Ranch, where it is located, is in a beautiful natural setting on a mountain overlooking the sea, which has been enhanced with abundant art works and a careful attention to aesthetics. The same for the food and service, which was respectively delicious and attentive. I only wish that the prix fixe menu for food had had a little more variety, like the amazing wine list.

Sierra Mar is a very special place. Sitting on the cliffs above Big Sur, the view is superb. The restaurant is beautifully designed with very nice spacing between tables allowing for quiet conversations. The service was excellent because of the well-trained staff and the more than adequate ratio compared to the number of patrons. The fixed price meal was served at a very leisurely pace with nice breaks between courses. The menu provides a lot of nice choices and when asked the restaurant was willing to accommodate some changes. The carrot soup, poached pear, black cod, wagyu burger, toffee cake, and chocolate were all delicious and plated very nicely. They could not have been better.
