“don't do it.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2007

My wife and I stayed there this last weekend. We booked the place based on the location and pictures/desriptions from their website. Upon arrival our "most private cabin" was a trailer connected to another trailer within 10' from an RV firepit wich had some of the worst late night joketellers I have everheard (very loud). That was all right across a small trail from the basketball courts where the balls bounced continously throughout the day.

Inside the cabin/trailer was clean and pleasant. Staff was very friendly and gave us a credit for the rest of our stay.

I might return, only to camp at a river site in the dead of winter.

We stayed here over the 4th of July holiday. The campground is very clean! The bathrooms were nice & were cleaned frequently during the night & day. The kids loved tubing on the river. The tubes can be rented for a few dollars right in the campground. There is plenty of room on the sandy shore for the adults to set up chairs to watch the kids. The staff is very friendly! The best sites are on the river, but don't include hookups. The RV sites are adequate. The playground was a big hit with the kids, too! We would come back again.

For $212 a night, I expect more than a mobile home with views of a basketball court and utility buildings. Unfortunately, this is what we got at the Big Sur Campground. The "cabins" are actually mobile homes, crammed together, in an area that looks more like a white-trash mobile home park than a VERY expensive campground. The outdoor area for our trailer/cabin was right on a well-traveled road (both cars and pedestrians), so we had absolutely no privacy and no area for the kids to roam freely.

There were, however, a few redeeming qualities to this campground. The cabins were very clean and stocked nicely (towels, pillows, pots and pans, etc.). The playground was a hit with our kids, as was the river with tubes (small rental fee).

If you have the option, go someplace else. However, if you have to camp here, bring your tent and get one of the sights along the river. Less expensive, better view and somewhat larger campsites.

We stayed at one of the cabins with equipped kitchen over this past weekend and it was a very positive experience. When we first stepped into the living room we immediately felt comfortable. The cabins have been nicely remodeled and maintained. The cabin seemed new. It's clean and heater works very well (the air tends to be cool in the early morning and evening, do bring jackets!) and well-lit. We walked around the entire property with areas for camping and travellers were discreet and enjoying themselves. All cabins seemed identical insides. You park your car right in front of your cabin. It's quiet and serene. Parts of property are right by the River with nice cascading sound of clear and chill water, very soothing and beautiful.

The staffs would joyfully greet you when you return to the property (you would check in with your car permit) and were apologetic when we didn't find a pre-requested crib and quickly delivered one with clean sheet and blanket to us.

It's terrifc to know there are lodging like this for those of us who don't camp and who can't afford to pay at least over $400/night for accommodations.

The loding requires travellers with no pets, it's for sanitary and tranquanlity reasons I think and it makes sense. So please do respect the policy. If you really can't travel without your pets, I trust you could find somewhere else to stay.

Once you book your reservation, they would send you a confirmation information along with a map of the property and the number of your room and the location of the lodging in Big Sur. There were no pictures of the cabins. There is shower only.

I didn't know what to expect at first but was pleasantly surprised. Happy travel!

I was lucky enough to find this spot 3 years ago, and am booked through 2009. It is a wonderful place. Yes, you are close to each other, but if you are camping with kids, it's awesome. They have a playground, and baketball court. You are right on the river and you can rent a tube for the whole day for a couple of bucks. It is extremely well cared for. The staff is very attentive. They have a very small store for emergency things like Milk. Ice, Firewood, ect, all priced about the same you will pay at the local stores. They even have a happy hour for 1/2 price Ice Cream in the evenings. There is a laundry facility as well as as hot showers, electric outlets in the bathrooms, which are cleaned several times a day. You can't beat the price, or the taste of the water.

Where to begin...

This place is terrible. FIRST and foremost, the other review with the title "Packed in like Sardines" is aptly titled. There is barely enough room for the trees in between the hodge-podge of cars, trucks, RV's mondo-tents, silly cabins, and misplaced amenities.

We found their site via the internet. We tried numerous times the week before arriving (after having a deposit of $131 in) to talk to someone regarding their pet policy. The phones were never answered, but busy. We trusted their website that stated, "Pets allowed".

We stayed in a cabin at $100/night. The bed was adequate, we had our own shower and toilet, and that was it. Don't expect ANYTHING else. There are signs everywhere (nailed or screwed of course) that made it perfectly clear that while they will give you a fresh towel for your $100/night, they would prefer that you just ignored the damp towel and live with it.

The campground was advertised on their website...
"Pets allowed"

While this is certainly the case based on our personal observation of near kennel-like conditions there, this is not entirely the case in truth.

We checked in on a Friday night for the weekend matrimony of two dear friends. We checked into a cabin there. Cabin 65A. The persons doing check-in certainly must have seen our dog in the car as the dog is white and obvious against the red of the vehicle. Nothing was said regarding the dog.

We got to our cabin and the first thing we noticed upon opening the door was a sign the clearly stated, "No pets".

3.5 hours away from home and we discover that pets are NOT welcome after all. OK. We put our (my fiancee and mine's) dog in the car for the night (No complaints from anyone that evening) while we attend a rehersal dinner for the wedding of our friends.

The next day we go to the beach with the dog, come back to prepare for the wedding (with adequate time!) and are greeted by a manager that notices (NOW finally?!) that we have a dog. It is then that we are 'instructed' into the policy regarding pets for the cabins, which is quite different from the CAMPSITES. No pets in OR around the cabins. NOTE: There is a campsite 50 feet away, VACANT.

We ask why can't the dog stay in the car like at campsites. We are told because left alone, he might bark. We ask if we can rent the immediately adjacent campsite to park the car in WITH THE DOG and call it even. No go. They (their representative, the 'manager') feel leaving the dog alone 50 feet away is somehow going to be a problem.

We ask for solutions. They offer us none. They don't even offer to give us a refund for the evening that they are now (4PM) telling us that we must deal with on our own, but definitely without the dog. Fortunately, as I said, we were there for a wedding and had other friends at OTHER campsites.

We ended up double driving our vehicle TWICE (once at night, once in the morning) to the Ventana campgrounds where our dog was allowed to sleep in the car. As with our first night in our campground, NO COMPLAINTS THERE EITHER. We are lucky to have had options, or we may have ended up leaving the dog tied to a tree on the side of the road for all that Big Sur Campground and Cabins could care.

We will NEVER EVER spend another dime there or anywhere nearby that may have any potential affiliation with the place. EVER. They were very good at stating policy, TERRIBLE at offering solutions.
