“Fernwood Cabin #29”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2012

We stayed in Fernwood's meadow cabin #29 for two nights over the Memorial Day weekend. I booked the cabin a month in advance, and it was the last one available. All of Big Sur seemed to be sold out the weekend we were there, so booking in advance, especially on holidays, is highly recommended.

Our cabin was located next to the meadow and has cabin #28 right next door. Some of the other cabins looked a little more private and tucked into the redwoods/hillside. The cabin is fully stocked with dishes, a coffee maker, fridge and stove so it was very convenient. Do make sure you close your food up at night though even if you stay in a cabin, as we found evidence that mice had eaten some food we left out on the kitchen counters.

There is a beautiful hiking trail between the cabins that leads onto Pfieffer Big Sur state park grounds and alongside the state park group camp area (which was closed for the season during our visit). We followed the trail to the state park lodge for breakfast (the grill at Fernwood only serves lunch and dinner), it's a wonderful easy walk along the river and a great way to work off your meal. From the lodge area you can access many other hiking trails, it's nice to be able to get to them from Fernwood without having to drive.

Be sure to check out the live music on Saturday nights at the grill. My husband and I were exhausted from a day of hiking but dragged ourselves up to the bar to hear the band and we ended up staying past midnight, we had so much fun! It's a very intimate setting and we got to chat with some locals and do some dancing.

Overall we had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back again.

I stayed here because it was very close to the start line of the Big Sur Marathon that I was running in. In addition, we selected this location over others because they really stressed how they were different than other campgrounds because they strictly enforced quiet time from 10pm to 8am. This seemed perfect for us. The first night, several groups partied until a littel after midnight. The next evening, the campground was completely full - the group right in front of us partied loudly, played music, threw beer bottles, and laughed uproariously until after 3am. I asked them to quiet down around midnight, but they were unresponsive. It was a miserable experience.

In addition, the cost was $50 per night for for a small spot that feels like the entire campground is one giant group camping experience. I could have looked past these issues if I had gotten any sleep.

Needed somewhere to stay as we passed through Big Sur so took a double room for one night. Service was impersonal but adequate. The room was basic and a little cold, the toilet rather tatty. The bed was comfortable. This was fine for somewhere to sleep and I would happily stay there again if it was half the price. For the money, I expected more (like tea and coffee facilities or at least a table and chair in the room) but it is in a very touristy area and so I think that's the going rate.

The coast redwoods here were beautiful but access to the forest was limited directly from the resort. It was possible to walk among the trees around the resort camp site.

Fernwood Resort offers a very competitive price in Big Sur, so the four adults in our party decided to try out the motel accommodations for a night. We rented one "room" that had a king and two twins, with a little door that separated the two sleeping areas (great option for those traveling with a couple and two singles)

Positive Points:
- The motel is steps away from a charming little country store with the basics and a grill with good food / drinks / games to play.
- The staff is great - friendly, knowledgeable, made you feel at home
- Clean

Points for improvement:
- We paid $20 extra for a room with a gas fireplace and that ended up being our only source of heat. Which wouldn't have been bad except it was in the 30s and the fireplace broke - three times. The staff had to come to our room three different times to fix the fireplace, before finally giving us the heater from their office (which shut off in the middle of the night) and refunding the extra $20.
- Thin walls

When all is said and done, go ahead and give this place a try - the fireplace could have just been a fluke and what motel in the woods doesn't have thin walls? The lack of heat, television and a place to hang out in our room pushed us to the Grill, where we had dinner and had a great time playing games for the evening (provided by the grill). Just know going in that what you pay in Big Sur does not buy what it would in other parts of California. But hopefully if you do have a problem while staying here the staff will be as helpful as they were to us.

We had a nice room with a fireplace and a private hot tub on the back deck. The room was very reasonably priced for this area and clean. It was small but nice. The back deck and hot tub was wonderful. If you go ask for a room with a private hot tub. Nice and well worth it. As some others have posted the walls are very thin.

Room Tip: Get a room with a private deck and hot tub.

The motel was like a semi rustic country cottage. It was cute but lacks some city comfort like an effective heating system. To be expected on the big sur
