“Hidden gem”

Crashing waves, beautiful sandy beach, away from hustle and bustle. interesting rock formations that waves funnel through, great place to picnic. Wish we had longer to stay and soak up the sun and sand. Because it is a tricky place to locate off of Highway 1 and a good distance in along a narrow, twisty road (for cars only!) the beach is a quieter option than others.

“Breathtakingly Beautiful Spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013

Don't miss it on your trip along Hwy 1 in Big Sur! You drop sharply down to the ocean through the forest for two miles along a one-lane road until you come out at the beach. There's a parking lot for your car ($5 fee). The coves, mountains, rock formations and crashing surf are so beautiful that you will stay for hours to take it all in. Nature at its finest, refreshing to the soul. Thank you to everyone who has helped preserve this beautiful little piece of California for this and future generations.

“Hard to assess”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 23, 2013

The beach is wonderful--one of the most exciting on the California coast. But the Forest Service has handed management to a private company that no longer accepts the government recreation passes. This is an unfortunate ripoff for such a wonderful natural place.

“Difficult to find, but make the effort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2013

Wow. Loved this beach. Beautiful rock formations, purple sand, strong waves. But finding it isn't easy, and driving the road down to it can be dangerous. Honk around corners! The sign is below the road, after you've already entered. It's the only road off the highway without a do not enter sign! That's actually how we found it. And the turn into it is quite sharp. But once you're there it is lovely. Don't use the bathrooms though!

“Just okay . . .”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2013

I think I expected too much from this beach. I am used to the beaches of Oregon and expected something similar. If you haven't seen rock formations or cliffs that come right down to the sea, this beach is a spectacular scene. It's not a good or bad thing, I just expected something more than it was.
The road leading to it can be treacherous with people who know the road and speed. I recommend using headlights to make yourself more visible.
