This is a great place to stay if you are a diehard nature lover. You feel as if you are sleeping in the treetops. We were in the Chateau. The room has a log cabin feel and is on the second floor so it is almost like a treehouse. There is a private bathroom. It was quiet. There is a heater if you are cold but the comfortors appear to be for 50 below. Dont go here if you want a spalike experience. Do check out the sunset across the road and the Henry Miller Center up the road. The staff was very nice. Breakfasts are excellent as was the dinner.

This was our first visit and WOW! At first glance it reminded me of a fairy land in the forest. The rooms appeared so tiny and magical. Tiny turned into romantic and cozy. We stayed in the Antique apartment. The furnishings, rugs, bed, and antiques were almost like a museum. We had a beautiful window overlooking the creek and in the treetops. It was amazing. The wood burning stove added to the ambiance. There were cozy chairs and a seating area. Plenty of room. This room also had an extra small area with table, chairs and an extra twin bed. Not being able to look the doors from outside added to the authenticity. This inn has been so lovingly restored and maintained. The room was spotlessly clean. The decor and scenery breath taking. Not having a fridge, we dined at the restaurant for breakfasts and dinners. We quickly learned to share a steak, soup, and salad, and bring our own bottle of wine, after our first bill was over $130.00 The food was outstanding for every meal. There is no in-room coffee but free coffee is offered every morning by the dining room. We hiked up the ridge for an amazing view of the ocean 3 times. One of the best parts was meeting other travelers from all over the world. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. One of the only negatives regarding our room was that it had no outside seating area. When we wanted to hang out outside of the room we were basically standing in the street. No bench or chair directly outside of our cabin. The other rooms in this row of buildings had seating areas. Since the property is one small road in a horseshoe, and we were close to the restaurant, every guest passed our room on their way to eat. The upside was we met so many great people while we were standing in the street. The downside, they saw me in my pajamas! Although every room is amazing and beautiful, for more privacy we would like to stay in Castro's Cabin which sits alone, or Upper or Lower Creek. Also Stokes and Faraway only share a wall with each other. Our cabin had no room above us, which was nice, but there were people sharing walls on each side. However reading about the paper thin walls, we did not hear a peep from our neighbors This is a truly amazing place. It is magical. You can feel the love and care that has gone into this property. We absolutely can not wait to return!

Room Tip: For more privacy: Castro Cabin, Upper or Lower Creek, Stokes, or Faraway. For visiting and being clo...

Our first visit occurred 25 years ago during our honeymoon drive down the PCH. Recreating this visit certainly did not disappoint. Brought back fine memories. We stayed in the Antique Apartment which had more than enough room for 2 of us. a Queen bed, and then a separate single bed. If one had a third person traveling, this would be ideal however, this bed was in an area that led into the bathroom. There was no bathtub for my bath-loving wife, which was a minor issue. There was a shower of course. Rooms are rustic and nicely appointed. We had a nice walk up the mountain which afforded great views of the ocean. While we decided to have a romantic wine and cheese dinner in our room, we did use the restaurant for coffee and wonderful homemade desserts! The breakfast the next morning was fantastic too, and great coffee flowed. Food was excellent, but a little on the pricey side. In 25 years, we'll definitely visit again

A good friend told me about her time at Big Sur's Deetjen's Inn. She had such fond memories, and spoke with such love, we had to stay one night on our trip down the coast from San Francisco.
We were not disappointed! A rustic Chateau Fiasco awaited us. We negotiated the stairway that stands under a huge horizontal tree branch to open the door to a vaulted ceiling room of rustic redwood construction. We felt like we were in a treehouse! Windows surrounded the inviting bed with views from every direction. A small porch was there for us to "perch" on and view the botanical pleasures of the property. As a gardener and florist, I was in flora and fauna heaven!
Final note on the Inn's rooms. A treasure trove of words awaits your reading as guest book from over the years are in each room. It brought tears to my eyes, as the love expressed for the beauty of the inn but also for each other was express in so many eloquent and simple ways.
But enough about the room, How about the food! We enjoyed an incredible evening meal in the charming eclectic dining room.
Their famous eggs benedict did wonders for preparing us for a day a driving down Rt1 to view that spectacular sight of the Pacific, mountains and the beauty of California.
Deetjens- a place I too will speak of with fondness and hope to return one day.
Kathy

Room Tip: We went with the only room that was still left. It's a popular place!

Wonderful cabins in Big Sur built in the 1930's. A very peaceful experience. There are no Wifi or TV here. The restaurant serves excellent food. Breakfast and dinner both to a very high standard. We stayed in Grandpa's room which has a private bathroom and an open fireplace. I absolutely loved it. There is an old record player and records inside the room in fully working order. Just ensure when you book you are specific if you don't want to share a bathroom. I recommend Grandpa's room for comfort, private bathroom and location (opposite the library and close to the restaurant/reception). The staff here are fabulous and very knowledgeable. Will definitely visit again and recommend to friends.

Room Tip: Grandpa's room has a private bathroom, a double bed and an extra single bed too (in a seperate p...

Our original room was undergoing renovations so we stayed in the Franklin room. The bed was one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. Big Sur gets chilly at night at the duvet was so warm that we felt really cosy. I've read that a lot of people complain about the noise and maybe it was just the room we stayed in but both nights there were other guests above us and I didn't hear a thing. The decor is beautiful and they do all the little touches (lamp to carry when it's dark, Scrabble board game). There's a woodstove in the Franklin room but we didn't need to light it.

The breakfast was amazing (raspberry/cream cheese stuffed french toast) and the waitress so warm and friendly.

Our favourite thing was to sit in the library/reading room with a bottle of wine. We actually turned the heater on because it was cool at night but that just added to the cosiness. During the day it was hot and sunny.

The only drawback is that yes, you are a bit close to the road and that particular part of the PCH doesn't have pedestrian access so it didn't seem very safe to walk down the road and explore.

I would also recommend checking out the Fernwood Tavern, down (north of Deetjen's) the road a bit. Great beers and atmosphere.

Room Tip: I didn't hear any noise when we stayed in the Franklin room. You also have a nice little table o...

Felt like we were sleeping in a rustic cabin out of one of the episodes from "Little House on the Prairie". Nice room with a private deck from which you can enjoy star gazing at night. The bathroom is shared and small but for one night it wasn't a problem. This was a stop over on our way to Napa Valley. Dinner in the lodge by candlelight was excellent. Cheeky, unusual spot that is worth a stop just to experience. Hiking in the area is also a fun plus. We saw hawks with spectacular ocean views.
