What a wonderful place! We had the "honeymoon" room which had a nice little private patio and a large comfy bed with real linen sheets! I never heard other people through the walls like some of the other folks have commented on. We only ate breakfast at the inn, and opted for Nepenthe and the Big Sur Bakery for our dinners. The breakfast was very tasty and they even had real maple syrup! Our room had a wood stove, but it was not cold enough to fire it up. The room was very quaint but very comfortable. I would definately go back there Big Sur is a magical place and one of my favorite places! There is nothing like a glass of wine and a burger at Nepenthe while the sun is setting on the ocean!

Room Tip: Some rooms have shared baths, and are close to the road. There is not much traffic at night so it w...

Charming enclave of workmen's cottages in Big Sur canyon but every word not whispered is audible and as our cottage was near the road, the passing vehicles were audible too.
The restaurant is superb!

Room Tip: Away from road

Everything was perfect, the staffis very kind. The only thing is the bathroom which is not so comfortable (need renovation for better feeling).
The restaurant is very tasty - especially Deetjens Dip sanwich for breakfast!!
Good to have some food +drink in your car - for late evening hours.

It's hard to describe how it feels to look out of your bedroom window and be halfway up a tree, but it's an experience I'd highly recommend. Before our arrival, I was having second thoughts about our booking at Deetjens. Comments on TA spoke of hippy dippy rude staff, annoying cats and thin walls.

Instead we found friendly, welcoming staff and a cosy cabin in an enchanted forest. Deetjens is a collection of cabins which have been added to over the years. There's not as many as I thought, and you're still quite near the road. I almost wished we were a bit deeper into the forest, but hey, you can't have everything. Sadly, there was no sign of the cat either, I would have welcomed him curling up on our bed! Inside our all-wood cabin, the bed was big and roomy, there was a cute little bathroom, and best of all was a woodburning stove in the corner. Curling up in an armchair with a book in front of a blazing fire is the perfect way to relax. The cabin was on stilts at the back, so when you looked out of the window you were halfway up the level of the redwood trees outside.

We'd read about the walls being thin, but the only noise we heard was from people outside a neighbouring cabin, who talked very loudly. I'd read about the infamous guest books in the room, all I can say is "too much information!". An account of a huge spider on a man's chest left me quite disturbed and you really don't want to hear about other couple's "glorious lovemaking" - eeeuuurrgh!

Luckily it wasn't enough to put us off dinner, which although pricey was excellent, probably the best food we ate in California. Our server also made a great local wine recommendation. The cabin setting is candelit and very romantic, especially when you stroll back to your cabin through the giant trees and gaze at the stars.

Opposite the site, there's a short walk to an amazing viewpoint with a stunning beach and a waterfall. Just a two minute drive brings you to Nepenthe's, a great place to enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sunset, or enjoy a gourmet burger as an alternative to dinner at Deetjens. Oh and don't miss the Phoenix shop and the Henry Miller library before you get on the road again!

I am so glad we stayed at Deetjens, it was one of the highlights of our trip, along with the whole Big Sur area.

We stayed in a room with a fireplace and private bath (the only option available when we booked) and it was absolutely perfect for our night in Big Sur. Deetjen's seems to emulate what Big Sur is all about--enjoying the amazing Redwoods, clean air and quirky vibe of this stretch of Coastal Cali. The rooms ARE rustic--there aren't even actual locks, but we didn't have any issues with noise from our neighbors as they warn you about due to thin walls. Breakfast was great and the staff was very helpful. In the morning, do the hike up the road behind the Inn for an amazing view.

We stayed at Deetjens five years ago, and after marrying this summer, we decided to return to celebrate our honeymoon. We stayed in the same cabin, Stokes, and it was just as we last left it . . . . . . amazing! The trees, the food, the charm, and the beauty. are priceless. We hope to return for our fifth year wedding anniversary!

Room Tip: Word has it that many cabins have paper-thin walls and aren't very private. Stokes was perfect!

I first saw Deetjens in 2010 while staying at the Ventana Inn in Big Sur. I was totally charmed by Deetjens, took many photos, and dreamed all year of staying there this summer. Our summer trip finally came, and on July 29 and 30, 2011, we stayed in the "New Room" at Deetjens. It was wonderful and just as delightful as I had hoped it would be.

Everything that others have said who do not like Deetjens is true. It is rustic. At the same time, for those who really love its charm, it is heavenly.

Our bed was very comfortable and had linen sheets. We love linen sheets and sleep on them at home. Our view from the "New Room" was of Castro Canyon. Our room had a triple window overlooking this redwood canyon and the view was sublime. The building of the "New Room" sits on the edge of the canyon.

Our room had, in addition to the bed, had a wood stove, two comfortable chairs, three lamps, a chest of drawers. It's a fairly large room. The bathroom was very decent with a very good shower head.

We thoroughly enjoyed the wood stove each night. There was plenty of wood provided.

Best of all, we loved the grounds of Deetjens and enjoyed a hike with beautiful views up the "private road". This easy hike is a must do.

We had two breakfasts and three dinners at our Deetjens stay. All were delicious. We especially enjoyed the pork chops and the lamb. Arrive at breakfast when they open if you want to sit by the fireplace for breakfast, especially on the weekend.

After our scheduled two night stay at Deetjens, we stayed three nights in a luxurious room at the Ventana. It was fabulous, but just a different experience from Deetjens. Not better, just different. We look forward to staying at Deetjens every year from now on.

Room Tip: Reserve early to get the room of your choosing. We loved the New Room for its view. It has only on...
