A very odd situation here - they have fireplace suites - but you can't use the fireplace and the furnace at the same time - because of a carbon monoxide danger!! Okay , so it's May and cold at night. The fireplace heats the main room a little bit but the rest of the cottage and the "second bedroom" in the back are cold - and you can't use the wimpy little furnace for fear of getting gassed out. This is nonsense!!!

Also - no TV or phones - so if you want to view and confirm your digital pix on a TV - well, too bad. And the office staff is not at all helpful - they just tell you to go down to the library.

This place needs to get updated for the modern traveler.

After much research on accomodation in the Big Sur area we opted for the Big Sur lodge.

The two bedroom accommodation was pleasant enough although the view from the veranda was disappointing being very tree shaded. The rooms are motel style blocks. The pool area was good and great for kids.

Our stay was marred however by very loud neighbours on consecutive nights, the first night a bunch of unsupervised teenagers seemed to play some sort of game about midnight which involved throwing things against the paper thin dividing wall. On the second night a drunk wedding party rolled up at about 1am and proceeded to party outside our room. Not much fun with small children asleep and not much sign of the 10pm quiet time discussed in other reviews.

Restaurant also disappointing food average and expensive and very slow service.

Alternatives might be Ripplewood where we had a great breakfast in sunny courtyard. The (detached ) cabins looked nice enough from the outside.

Also had very good lunch on the terrace at the Big Sur River Inn, good food and atmosphere and seats in the river, didnt see acommodation though.

We stayed at the Big Sur Lodge last week. The accomodations are set up like small cabins - clusters of buildings spread across a large area. Our unit had a queen size bed in the bedroom and a queen bed and two twins in the main area along with a small table and chair set and a front porch where we sat and watched the deer.
We hiked during the day and swam in the small, but sparkling clean pool at the lodge.
They were fully booked, but it didn't seem at all crowded as the grounds are so spacious! We enjoyed a yummy breakfast in the lodge and had an incredible dinner at Nepenthe (just a few minutes drive south).
It's quite secluded and there are no phones, tv's radios or clocks in the rooms. We did however have cell phone service there.

When we arrived, our cabin reeked of gas. Our neighbors told us they had the same problem. The issue turned out to be the rickety gas heater. After that was fixed, we tried the stove. More gas filled the place. We ended up moving twice to different cabins and finally checked out early in dismay.

We later went up Highway 1 to a place called Costanoa, which was comparably priced and offered everything Big Sur Lodge promised but didn't deliver.

The redwoods were lovely. Accommodations, much less so!
