“Quiet, Peaceful, Somewhat Economical Getaway in the Big Sur”
Reviewed July 6, 2004

My hubby and I enjoyed the cabin and the fireplace (you can make nightly fires), although try to get a sunny, updated location as our room was dark b/c of trees. True, the room had the "fireplace" smell, but in a remote location costing only $250/night (2 bedroom unit only available), that is reasonable. Room was almost updated, with granite sinks, very clean but the sofa showed some wear. We enjoyed the quiet and we were able to take fantastic hikes in nearby parks as well as enjoy nearby dinner at Post Ranch Inn (get reservation, well worth high cost of meal). We passed on breakfast at the Lodge and instead headed to Deetjan's (maybe 5 miles south) which was fabulous. Bring a swim suit, there is a nice pool to relax by after hiking. I could see this a good spot for families too, although need to respect 10:00 p.m. quiet time (sound travels here). If you don't want to camp nor spend more than $500/night at Ventana or Post Ranch, this is a great option. We liked no tvs or radio -- our PDA's also didn't work anywhere in Big Sur, which was great.

I have always camped in Big Sur (about 20 times!), but opted to stay in the lodge when I brought my mom here for her 50th birthday present. The lodge is perfect. Warm, homey rooms. Great scenery in the Redwoods. Not too expensive for being right in the middle of the State Park. My mom and I thought it was amazing. The other reviews mentioned shabby decor- ours seemed to be newly redecorated. Also, the food was really basic but tasty and affordable. They have a camper's menu that is about $7 a meal that is very good. Now I'm not sure I can go back to camping....
Big Sur tends to attract that strange dichotomy of visitors- the unshaved, earthy hippy folk, and the uber-yuppy kind who seemed to have trickled down from the neighbor in the north (Carmel), yet The Lodge manages to stay very middle ground, which is a nice thing.

Can't say this place is anything great. Overpriced and not very clean. Rooms are in disrepair. Very disappointed. Don't waste the money....stay in Montery and drive into Big Sur!

We just returned from our second visit to the Lodge at Big Sur. It was without a doubt one of most enjoyable experiences we have ever encountered.
True, no phones, televisions, or radios. just a world full of nature. We had deer 10' from our deck. And a roaring fire place in our main room.
I've traveled the world and have never enjoyed any venue quite this much.

Overall the Big Sur Lodge is nice. Pros: The location is central to many parks and a free park pass is included with your stay. The restaurant was nice and the food was good, but nothing overly spectacular. The porch off the room was the best part, surrounded by many beautiful redwoods. Cons: I was disappointed with our fireplace room because it wreaked of smoke regardless of whether the fireplace was lit or not. All of our clothes carried this smell for the whole week of our trip (we headed further up the coast later on in the week). Their website is deceiving because it makes the rooms look way nicer than they really are, especially the bathroom. Also, we had no bathtub just a stand-up shower. I did not really think the cost of the room matched my expectations. I would probably stay there again, however asking for a newer room and no fireplace - or just stay at the campgrounds instead - it is cheaper!

Stayed at Big Sur Lodge one night, although originally planned on three. My husband missed TV too much, not me! (No TV, no phone, etc) It was a rainy night in late March, a perfect time to enjoy the fireplace. They gave us plenty of firewood, would have liked a comfortable couch in front of fire...choice was bed, stick chairs or floor. Rain on the roof was memorable, as sounded like one of those old time tin roofs. Pool was not heated. Bed very comfortable. Wonderful environment in the redwoods. Enjoyed hike to the falls. Restaurant OK. Recommend for those who are looking for a great place to be inspired, read a book, walk in the woods.
