“Great place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013

Spent 3 nights here which is a very special place. Coming from Australia we were unaware of the California fog but it didn't detract from our stay here. Staff were only too eager to help from the office staff to the gardeners who found us to give us the name of a tree we had enquired about. Had a problem with our original room being next to a large air conditioner condenser, we were immediately changed and when we returned to our room a bottle of wine was waiting with a note of apology. Food was excellent as was the standard of the rooms and amenities. The only criticism was the breakfast which was substandard.

My wife an I spent 4 nights at Ventana in a Big Sur Spa Suite. The staff was very accommodating and the Inn and grounds are beautiful. We ate at the restaurant several times for breakfast and dinner and order room service one night, all were very good. Not all our meals were at Ventana as we also wanted to experience some of the other options in the area. We also booked a couples massage and it was excellent.

Not sure what the weather is like other times of the year (we were here in July) but ocean views were mostly blocked by fog. However views of the mountains and hills behind the facility are very good. Our room had a forest and mountain view and we made use of the hot tub, soaking tub and fire place and thoroughly enjoyed the room and its amenities.

A stay at Ventana is pricy and we wanted to spoil ourselves a little and be pampered so we would highly recommend a stay if you are looking for those types of services and accommodations.

My husband and I spent a weekend at Ventana Inn,recommended by our son who got engaged there. We cannot be happier with this resort, the staff is so accommodating, friendly, courteous, and welcoming! From the drivers to he front desk staff, to the restaurant staff, and the afternoon wine/ cheese staff, it is exceptional and well worth the price. The food is excellent from the variety at breakfast to the presentation at dinner! The grounds are very impressive, the foliage, fauna,
trees are gorgeous. There are so many places to find serenity, peace, and quiet.....it never felt crowded. Love the resort, it's people, and our overall experience here!!!

Room Tip: They are all great rooms, don't focus on the room, enjoy the surroundings, nature, grounds, fore...

Just returned from a weekend getaway at Ventana Inn. We spent two nights and three days in one of the Big Sur Suites in the Oak Buildings in room #12.

Room Selection:
Before settling in our room, we also toured one of the Pacific House Ocean View Suites as well as one of the Big Sur Spa Suites. The Pacific House Ocean View suites are much more modern feeling (they don't have the rugged feeling of the Big Sur Suites) and the views are VERY DISTANT, and at least during our stay there, were mostly covered with fog. Perhaps they should rename those rooms "Fog View :-) " Anyway, we were happy with our room choice. The Spa Suites were identical to the Big Sur suites except for the addition of a private hot tub on the deck. I also recommend being careful about room location. The property is quite spread out, so depending on where you are and where you like to spend your time, you could easily be unhappy with your choice. I felt like the room itself was nice, but certainly not worth the hefty price tag. I always look forward to a roaring wood burning fire, but the wood they provide as well as the design of the fireplace leaves a lot to be desired. Sure, you can build fires (we did everyday), but it was pretty wimpy. The bedding was comfortable, the tub was nice, the canyon views were pretty, and housekeeping did a nice job.

Amenities:
Breakfast: Breakfast was wonderful. Included in your room rate was a substantial conn breakfast buffet with ample choices. In addition, you could order breakfast entrees off the regular menu for a reasonable price if you wanted something more substantial. Breakfast is at the restaurant which has beautiful views. It is a ten minute trail walk to the restaurant... at first I thought this was a terrible design, but over the weekend the morning walk grew on me. You can also ask to have someone transport you in one of the golf carts if you don't feel like walking. Service at breakfast was great the first day and dismal the second day.

Daily Resort Hike:
A "naturalist" takes you on a walk around the property through the redwoods to point out everything from wildlife, flora and fauna, as well as restaurant recommendations. It was fine.

Yoga:
Morning yoga in the front of the fireplace in the "library." Yoga was fine, best part was doing yoga in front of the fireplace.

Wine and Cheese Reception:
Excellent! Everyday from 4-5 there was a wine and cheese reception in the lobby. Wines were interesting, cheese was exceptional, and servers were foodies who knew their stuff. If all the 5* places I've stayed, this reception stands in the top few. In addition, there is complimentary 10 minute chair massage on a first come, first serve basis. Get there early if that's important to you.

Spa:
I had one of the best massages I've ever had with Giles. $130 for a 50 minute massage and it was worth every penny.

Pools/Japanese Baths:
We spent some time at the clothing optional pool. Pool was nice, people were private and respectful in the clothing optional areas. I don't understand what makes the baths "japanese?" I meant to ask, but never got around to it. Didn't seem like anything different to me than a normal hot bath?

Dinner at the Restaurant:
Four course dinner for $70, as well as ala carte options (the same menu) where 1st and 2nd courses are $15, entrees $35, and dessert $10. Outside dining was beautiful... I thought the food was all "fine." Nothing was spectacular, nothing was bad.

Overall Feel:
Overall, the feeling at Ventana is relaxed, quiet, non pretentious, friendly, and lots of privacy. Two nights there most definitely gave us the relaxation romantic getaway we were looking for. In terms of price ratio to the overall feel, I would say it's a mighty hefty price tag for what you get. If price is no issue, you will enjoy a relaxing stay.

Room Tip: Ask to look at room options before you settle. Pay close attention to location as the property is v...

We only stopped for lunch on our way down the PCH. The meal, the service and the ambiance were wonderful. And the view was fantastic. I would certainly try to stay at the Ventana Inn on our next trip. It looked wonderful.

Wanting a quick trip on fairly short notice after business nearby I looked at Post Ranch as I had been there before some time ago but was put off by the exorbitant current prices - the available rooms were more than 4 times the price of Ventana. I am not price shy, but after comparing the two properties I couldn't justify the differential and booked Ventana instead. No regrets! The property is lovely, the room large and very comfortable with a luxury lodge feel, the fireplace cozy, the deck with lounge chairs, table, hammock and beautiful vista a late afternoon treat and the bath truly palatial! The included breakfast was more than satisfying and the late afternoon wine and cheese was very pleasant. Everyone on the property was friendly and helpful. Dinner outdoors on the restaurant patio was quite good and the morning property tour/hike was interesting. A lunch at Post Ranch - truly excellent, but ultimately too much for midday - just confirmed that Ventana was a great choice. Would happily return and not feel at all that it was a second choice! PS - the no children rule makes for a true relaxation!

Room Tip: Room 58 was an end unit and was very private and quiet

Overall, Ventana makes for a getaway that takes you miles away from any city and hustle/bustle. The resort feels like a campground with cabins located throughout open trees and forests. We stayed in a room that had a small sliver of the Pacific in our view, but the view of the stars at night made up for this. I would check the resort map and request a room with the best view possible. I wouldn't stay in a room where you have people above or below you - choose to pay the additional price for a freestanding room with a hot tub on the porch - well worth the privacy, regardless of the view.

The happy hour available was fantastic, with access to some free wine, cheese, crackers. This made for a great touch, and should easily be included in the price of the rooms, which it was. We were able to go to the spa, spend time in the warm water, walk over to the happy hour in our robes and enjoy a snack before dinner. Additionally, the ability to walk to the restaurant and main area was a great option - and one we chose over getting in the car and driving to a local restaurant. The food at the restaurant was just okay, and for the price, should have been slightly better - but it was still a lodge feel that put us in a relaxing mood. The rooms themselves were so clean and large, it felt like you could move in for a long residence, and this made our weekend an overall great experience.
