I had the pleasure of staying here while photographing a wedding, and the beauty of the location made me want to stay much longer! My favorite part of the resort is around back where wooden adirondak chairs sit in the river, just begging you to sit, relax and just "be" in the midst of the swirling water! Beautiful place for a wedding!!!

The only thing I didn't love was the shower head was really high, and the stall was little so it was a little hard to navigate, but so not a big deal in the grand scheme of things at all!! The staff was awesome, friendly and fun! Food was yummy! Great cosmos at the bar too!

To me, the Big Sur River Inn didn't quite live up to the vision of its lovely website. Yes, there is a beautiful river and quaint chairs positioned in and near the river for lounging, but always with other people around so not too serene or private. The motel sits on both sides of Hwy. 1, which had lots of loud, fast traffic while we were there, so could be a problem for light sleepers. The rooms were nice and clean but nothing too special other than the rustic, planked walls. The front porch lights couldn't be turned off, so even with curtains pulled, I thought the room was a bit too bright for comfortable sleeping.
I couldn't really recommend their restaurant either, as the food also seemed just average, and I had to ask three times before I could get water that was hot and not just lukewarm for brewing a cup of tea. Restaurant opened later than I would expect for breakfast, so the adjacent General Store was helpful for getting tea or coffee earlier. (no tea/coffee facilities in the rooms.) The General Store seemed well-stocked with food, wine, and other supplies.

Room Tip: If they have rooms further from the traffic, try to get one of those!

Once the sun goes down it is freezing and the rooms do not have TV's or telephones (too cold to hang by the river or go in the so called heated pool). Very loud from all the traffic. Lots of tourist stop here and get in the way of my relaxing afternoon. We had to share the beautiful river and chairs with a hundred tourists stopping by to check it out. The rooms are rustic and old, it felt nasty in the bathroom. The toilet seat was not attached to the floor and you had to hold on for dear life. The food is very over priced and not great. We will not stay here again.

We were in Big Sur for a wedding and stayed here for several nights. Because we booked late we ended up switching rooms halfway through our stay and had the opportunity to stay on the riverside in a suite and in a room across the street. Both were AMAZINGLY CLEAN! The housekeeping staff is to be commended. The beds in both rooms were very comfortable.
The sheets were soft, the towels were fluffy and the views were lovely. The staff was universally friendly and the setting is spectacular. To sit with a drink and a book and relax an afternoon away in a chair in the river was bliss.

The girl at the front desk is rude ! I would never reccomend this place to anyone. If you want to stop by and check out the river and grab a burrito or ice cream then its great. DO NOT STAY HERE !! The staff in resturant , store and motel seem to hate thier jobs. I wish we would have gone ahead to Monterey. Now I know why they make you pay for the first night in advance if you book ahead because there is no turning back.... uggg...
