These campsites are supposed to be the two most spectacular campsites in all of California, or is it all of America? I can't remember...... Anyway, we booked months in advance, like you have to do if you want to bag one of these sites. It truly is a spectacular setting and you'll never find another place like it. As we had been car camping and hostelling for the previous 3 weeks, we weren't travelling as light as I would have liked so had to make several trips back up to the car to get our stuff (I watched with envy as our neighbours managed all their gear in one trip). We checked in at the Big Sur ranger station further up the road, although I don't think we actually had to as they said all we needed to do was display our booking confirmation on the dashboard of the car. The McWay waterfalls are about a 10 minute walk from the campsite and are best photographed late in the afternoon if you're after the postcard shot. You won't be disappointed if you camp here - it definitely worth the effort!

If you find it (can be easily missed), you will feel like the greatest explorer of the world. It’s a little paradise, hidden along the high cliff and not visible for the main road. It takes 15min to walk there from the entrance from the part, under the highway, into the tunnel and there you are. Pristine beach (no access there) with lovely waterfall dropping from the cliffs. Depending on when it was raining last, it can be small or big one and you might be lucky to be rewarded with the rainbow. On the other side, along the path hanging over the cliff, you reach late Pfeiffer estate, which unfortunately is in ruin now. But you get nice picnic area with palms amazing view of the coastline towards north.

McWay Falls cascade about 80 feet into the ocean. You can view it from above or from the trails but cannot descend to the beach (way too steep a climb and there is no trail - you might be able to approach from the ocean in a small boat). It is truly beautiful!

This was our first trip to a park on our Big Sur journey. We took a quick hike to a waterfall and then up the hill for an overlook. It was fine but not nearly as beautiful as some of the other attractions we saw. If you go here, I would only recommend you spend an hour or two tops.

Make sure and stop here to visit the only waterfall that drops into the Pacific Ocean in CA. There are picnic tables and restrooms. Bring your camera with you. This is a photographers paradise.
