“Great tour on Christmas Day”
Reviewed January 2, 2012

Having lived on the east coast for most of my life, I have seen a lot of really cool lighthouses. The lighthouse itself was not among the top tier, but the location definitely was. This tour was well worth the time and $10 fee.
We went on the 10AM tour on Christmas day. There were two tour guides- John and Kevin. John was very nice and definitely more low key. We went with Kevin's group and laughed the entire time. He really knew his history, and was very lively and entertaining in his delivery.
The tour is 3 hours long. You park at the bottom of the hill and walk 1 mile and 360 feet to the top. It's definitley a climb but unless you are in very poor health, pretty much anyone should be able to do it since you make numerous stops along the way while the guide explains the geology and history of the location.

“Worth the Long Walk”
Reviewed December 20, 2011

Park on Hwy. 1 by the locked gate and wait for the tour guide to show up. He will have you follow his car to the parking lot at the base of the large hill. You will then walk along the one lane road up the side of the hill to the buildings, stopping along the way to listen to the guide's stories. The walk is worth it just for the views alone. You get to go inside the light house and climb the stairs to the catwalk along the top. We were very lucky in that we were there one of the few times when it wasn't cold and windy. The only part I didn't like was havng to wait for everyone to finish in the gift shop before we could all walk back down the road together (not allowd to leave by yourself).

“Don't Miss This”
Reviewed September 10, 2011

We are so glad that we chose to visit Point Sur. You will get a mix of beautiful scenery and interesting history. After you drive in the gate and park at the bottom of the "island", you walk around a road to get to the lighthouse. Each view is breathtaking. If you are in Big Sur for the beauty, you will not be disappointed by Point Sur. This was one of our favorite things to do in the area (and Point Lobos).

“Spectacular views, fascinating history, and a great afternoon.”
Reviewed August 8, 2011

We had a great time on the Point Sur Lighthouse tour and highly recommend it! The huge rock rising out of the water with buildings on top captures your attention from Highway 1. We came down from Carmel and the drive took about 20 minutes. One thing to note is that the gate is closed and locked at the tour start time so you need to get there beforehand. Our tour started at 10am and we got there about 10 minutes till.

Our guide was highly knowledgeable, professional, and kind. We have travelled widely and she was the best tour guide we have encountered (think she was a scientist). As we walked to the top, we made lots of stops and learned about the lighthouse keepers and their families, ship wrecks, and the natural history of the area. Along the way we saw sea lions, otters, lizards, many types of birds, and a snake. If there had been whales nearby, we probably wouldn’t have seen them because it was too windy to see a spout. As you climb the rock, the views get more and more beautiful.

We were amazed that the historic restoration is mostly done by a group of volunteers. Our guide showed us a picture of one of the buildings when it was new, then another picture when the building was almost falling down, and a picture of the building now that it’s restored. The restored building was identical to the photo of the building when it was new.

By the end of the tour we were hungry so we stopped at Rocky Point Restaurant on the way back to Carmel. The food was simple, but well prepared. We sat on the deck where the views are spectacular. It was a perfect afternoon!

“Lighthouse tour is great”
Reviewed April 25, 2010

Beautiful scenery. Need to plan this ahead of time, as it is a guide-only tour. Look at the website pointsur.org to get the tour times.
It took about 3 hours, and there is a walk up the paved road to the top of the rock/lighthouse. It is nice to hear the history, and imagine families living up on the rock year round. Stories like how they got supplies, how they kept the lighthouse working, etc. Also the walking pace seemed fine to us - after walking up for a while, we would stop and look and the scenery, listen to the guide, take pictures and then continue again. There is a gift shop at the top, and there are neat things to see there. Some of the buildings are getting renovated and so we could only look from the outside, so will have to do this again to see inside. This was an informative, and scenic tour. Definitely recommend!
