“Nothing but the Best! No worries.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2006

We just returned from a short (4day) stay at the Marina El Cid. All I can say is BRAVO!. The place is immaculate the service top notch and the rooms very well appointed. Our room service staff was very attentive. We did not have any major issues come up to be resolved which serves as the main reason we were so impressed. The bed even in my Platinum room was a tad hard but hell everything else more than made up for that minor inconvenience. Our trip to Cozumel and Puerto Morelos was nice and the taxi ride inexpensive. We were met with refreshing fruity drinks and taken to our room post haste. The bar staff was willing to do whatever you liked. If you knew what was in it they usually got it right. If you don't know what is in a purple hooter shooter then don't expect them to know. As I said great time just too short we will do our full week there next year. And the year after that. No worries.

We just returned from El Cid. You will like it if you like to be all by yourself! It is 20 miles from the city of Cancun-so unless you rent a car or pay for an excursion to the city- you are stuck! THe on site staff is good to get you involved in activities.
The hotel was nice, but we did not have hot water. The service at the pool restaurant was VERY SLOW- WE waited 20 minutes just to get a menu. ALso there brochure states a sauna and steam room, and we looked and looked with no luck. Finally, someone told us that it hasn't been built yet. Their hot tub was broken at the time of our stay, and no one at the front desk knew about it being broken.(It was a bit obvious-it popped out partially from the bottom.)
WE also lost a piece of jewelry there, and they were no help to us. We are still waiting for a report from them.
So all in all would we go back! Most likely, yes, they need to work out some kinks.

Hola, my friends! My husband and I returned last night from a four night stay at Hotel El Cid! While we were sitting in the pool yesterday morning we both agreed another day would have been perfect! The staff of this hotel were amazing. Make sure if you have the opportunity - sign up with the Platinum Level. Wonderful perks. While not always "perfect" you must remember that you are on vacation in Mexico. It's just different than the US! Our room was spotless, refrigerator filled, bottled water was plentiful, the service was outstanding, the pool was my favorite, the snorkel tour with the Platinum Level was some of the best snorkeling we have ever experienced. Our guides, Pepe and Luis, swam with us and navigated the coral so that we were able to see everything! They were great! Save your money and do not do the Jungle Tour unless you just want the experience of driving a fun little boat. The jungle consists of dead trees and a channel running out to the ocean in Cancun. If you want nightlife and the party scene, don't go here. If you want great food, great service and total relaxation, this is the place. Wish we could have stayed longer!

Stayed here in june for a few days, the hotel and rooms were brilliant, spacious and well kept. The restraunts were lovely with plenty of choice and reception staff (platinum) were outstanding.
Overal this hotel was great but.....
i was with my 2 daughters and we werent at all impresed with the entertainment staff with the exception of the twin girls who made our stay extra special.
the rest of the team looked miserable and the activiteis were poor, there appeard to be 3 activities running at once which was a let down as we couldnt participate, whoever thought of this???
the boss of the team i also found to be patronising and lazy and appeared to love "being in control" of his team mates and usually just stood wan watched while his team joined in the activities. i heard a few people comment on this, not good when so many guests are noticing!

i would return to this hotel.

I recently stayed at the Marina El Cid in Cancun (July 17 - 21) and had a pretty nice time. It was a family vacation including my wife and two kids (ages 12 and 15).

The resort is new and very attractive. We booked a "junior suite" and although a little tight for 4 people, it did not disappoint us. The water to the room did go off one morning and the shower was cold the next day, but the room was comfortable.

Upon check in, we did have a representative (Teresa) try to pressure us into a timeshare presentation scheduled the next day. I made the reservation just to "get rid of her" and never attended the presentation. She never tried to contact me again.

The staff was very good. The bartenders (Jesus and Alberto) and waiters (Norberto and Luis) were excellent. Very friendly and great with the kids. Don't worry if you can't speak spanish as most of the staff speak english.

Ok, now for the complaints...

All inclusive is supposed to mean all-inclusive. Despite this notion, guests were still "tipping" everyone. I have nothing against being generous but it creates an expectation that should be avoided. I tipped rarely, and generally because I felt pressured to do so.

Don't expect to snorkel at the beach. Despite the El Cid's offer that snorkeling is available at no cost, this is untrue. It used to be offered but apparently guests were taking the snorkel gear home with them. We went on the snorkeling excursion from the Marina for $33(USD)/person and were not disappointed.

A BINGO game for guests was charging 1$ per card. We opted not to play.

Best take-aways...

The weather was beautiful, despite a daily forecast for rain. We never saw a drop.

The pool and slide are fabulous.

Eat breakfast at the Hacienda or Al Andalus buffet. Lunch at the Hacienda. Dinner at the Marina or El Alcazar.

Just returned from a five day stay at the El Cid (July 15-19) and thought I'd contribute a review since I found the other reviews helpful.

I now understand why reviews of the same hotel can be so contradictory. We were initially placed in building 17 with two beds (we had requested one King), a completely empty fridge (that was not restocked), and no room service menus. The room was clean and had a nice view of the pool and beach, but a bit noisy during the day (due to the pool music) and had a funny smell. After some persistence with the front desk, on the 3rd day we were switched to building 14 by the quiet area with a gorgeous ocean view, fully stocked fridge and very nice room. Completely random!

But don't let this dissuade you from coming to El Cid. The facilities are super nice and the support staff very friendly. One great aspect is the lack of a crowd, so we never had problems finding chairs on the beach, a private area in the pool, a spot at the swim up bar, or someone to order a drink from.

We dined at the Marina restaurant one evening and yes we did have lobster. The restaurant by the pool, the formal restaurant and the buffet were all very good - plenty of choices and day-to-day variety.

Bring water shoes and the beach/ocean is fine. We spent much of our time in the water. The water is slightly murky in the morning with seagrass, but by noon most of it is raked away by hotel staff and the water transforms to a clear bright turquoise.

The timeshare people were a non-factor. We arrived late the first night when they weren't working. They called the next morning, but we simply told them we were busy and to call back later. They called the next day and we didn't answer the phone. That was it.

We booked private transportation to/from the airport through Best Transfers for $80. Even though our inbound flight was delayed, they were there waiting for us. If you've never been to the Cancun airport, head straight for the shuttle area after deboarding and ignore everyone else. Some under the guise of airport officials will try to rope you into using their transportation, to the point of pretending to be the transport you booked!

As others have indicated, nights are very relaxed, this is not the place if you're looking for a wild party atmosphere. But for rest and relaxation in the sun along with some good food, the El Cid is a fine choice.

My family and I spent a well deserved weekend at La marina el cid and had a wonderful time.
Positives-The Alcazar restaurant-go every night, it is awesome. The baby pool was just what kids love. The room was perfect for us, first floor so we could excape to our patio during nap time. Spacious and nicley decorated. The entire property is beautiful, tranquil and relaxing.
Negatives-I paid more attention to this for some reason......Room had some mold issues, our mini bar was empty until the last day, when they only put 6 drinks total..no snacks, no bathrobes, bottled water was scarce, had to go to 2 restaurants, a maid and finally room service to get water at 9am. The seafood restaurant told us we had to stay a week to even eat there without a charge(not mentioned anywhere) . After reading other reviews I have decided they are a little sketchy since they give people different reasons why they cannot have the lobster dinner. We are local(Cozumel) and I have to say that 99% of the lobster at restaurants is from the Pacific coast, not local catch, so they cannot say it is out of season, that's just a convinient lie.
Would we go again??? That's a hard one. We all really enjoyed ourselves, but as we were driving to the property I realized why the mangroves were all dead, the hotel built a road to the property essentially cutting off all water supply to the mangroves, yes they were damaged by Wilma, but they are dead because of the hotel road. Sad, as I am sure they could have figured out another way. Mangroves are essential to reef fish. If I would have known this first I would not have booked, but we would have missed out on a great hotel.
