“Awesome Family Resort”
Reviewed March 20, 2012

We travelled on Mar 9-17th, 20 people with kids ranging from 8-15. Everybody had an absolute blast!! We received great service from the time we walked in to the hotel. The bellboys and front desk staff were friendly and did their best to accomodate our requests as we were all in the same building, 18, which was very convenient being close to the pool and lobby area. We negotiated an upgrade and got a nice jacuzzi room on the ground floor. The time share people never even approached us.

The rooms were very clean, modern and well maintained. The beds were firm, but comfortable and getting extra pilllows or towels was never a problem. The mini fridge was restocked daily with beer and water and extra beverages when requested were always provided. The pool area was fantastic. The jumping cliff was a huge hit with both the adults and kids. There were always activities going on but no one bothered you if you didn't want to participate. The waiters and bartenders were always friendly and having premium liquor was impressive. How anyone could complain about the food is beyond me. If you can't find something on the buffet that you don't like then you should not go on a vacation. The quality and variety of the food was excellent. The Ala Carte restaurants were very good, however there did seem to be some confusion when booking them. The rules of when you can book them did seem to change and try to book them early in your trip. We never did get to eat at the Marina Seafood Restaurant, perhaps having 20 of us made this difficult.

The beach volleyball and bar area was a lot of fun and it turns in to a nice place at night to have a drink. Aaron known as, 'The Rooster' works in the towel area and booked us on a great Catamaran snorkelling tour. Mario was our captain and he treated us to a great time. The only slight disappointment might have been the beach past the hotel as it gets somewhat rocky and unfortunately you can't walk too far, although you can walk the other direction where there is another resort. I can't say enough about the staff and the service. The grounds are immaculate everyone is friendly and they are very hardworking people. We tipped the servers and maids and they deserved and appreciated it. If you want a great family resort at a reasonable price this is the one.

Room Tip: Building 16 and 17 near the pool and beach are convenient and the third or fourth floor would provid...

My wife and I stayed at the El Cid January 22-26. We had the best time. The food was great. I would say breakfast was the best. We went to Puerto Morelos one day cost a total of 12 peso a piece for the round trip. I would stay again for sure.

Reviewed March 18, 2012

A group of 21 of us, 12 adults and 9 kids (aged 5-13) stayed from March 7 - 16, 2012 and all had a great time.

First the negative - I started emailing the resort in August asking questions, making room requests and asking for assistance to make at least one a la carte reservation in advance knowing it would be difficult to make one for a large group during high season. Responses from Sr. Ceglarski were prompt and friendly. Unfortunately, when we arrived NOT ONE of our requests were satisfied and it appeared that Amelie knew nothing of them. I will say that Amelie and other front desk staff were polite and professional, not rude as stated before here. To be clear, I was never promised anything but to have asked for everyone to be on the ground floor of the same building (5 of 6 rooms were the same category) and to arrive and have all of us scattered among 3 buildings on all different floors and the one adjoining request because of children not to be satisfied was a very disappointing start to our vacation. 3.5 hours of pushing and negotiating and all but 1 family was in the same building - building 11. 2 of our party have or do work in the hotel industry and know that while it can be difficult to manage with people checking out on different days it is not impossible. It would have been nice if just 1 or 2 things were done when we got there. The good news...that is the only disappointment.

Rooms - clean, spacious, well appointed. I don't think there is a bad view in the resort. Yes, sometimes you are looking at the beautiful gardens (and they are beautiful) and not the ocean but if you really want an ocean view then book that category to be certain. Mini-bar was well stocked and a note in the fridge got us more water and beer then standard. The beds, king and murphy were firm but comfortable. The counterspace in the bathroom was plentiful and there was also ample closet and drawer space.

Grounds - the pics posted did not due this place justice. The gardens are lush and maticulously kept. The hotel is well laid out and nothing is more than a few minute walk away.

Beach - the beach was rarely packed and was not as rocky as I had expected. The kids did not bother wearing watershoes.

Pool - the pool was huge and never felt crowded. The jumping cliff and slide were a huge hit with the kids. The adults enjoyed this too but beware - the slide is fast and a few of the ladies were even flipped from back to front trying it out. The cliff jump was also a source of bruises if you don't go in right. It is not the place to try a "butt-cracker"! Lounge chairs at the pool are near impossible to find even at 6:30 in the morning. I have no idea what time guests are getting up to get them but we would just get a patio table, a few regular patio chairs and throw our towels on the cement when we wanted to sun or the hubby's would go steal a few from the beach and bring them up. Unlike many, we did not save a chair per person as you will never all be lounging, sitting at once. We did see the hotel bringing out more chairs on the first Saturday of March break but again they were taken early! We just rolled with it.

Food - I have no idea what people are complaining about. The food is fresh and tasty. The omelettes and fresh fruit in the main buffet were wonderful. There are smoothies, fresh juice and cereal, bagels, bacon, hashbrowns, waffles, pancakes...everything you could ask for. The main buffet is much better for breakfast than the buffet near the pool but the pool buffet is quieter. At lunch our preference was the pool buffet. The freshly cooked fish was excellent and there was even turkey a few days. The salads, guacamole, pico were really good and the kids loved the pasta and ice cream bars. The main buffet for dinner, again, very good. Every night had a different theme and there was always something that satisfied everyone. Having more a la cartes to have a break from buffet would be nice. We ate at the Marina and Mexican a la carte restaurants and reviews with our group was mixed but no one had a bad meal. Some just enjoyed theirs more than others. We ordered from room service many times and it was great for late night snacks and when the kids wanted mid-afternoon treats. The quesadillas and sandwiches are fantastic.

Bars - the best cesar, which we are all missing, is made by Vincente at the bar near the adults section. The pool bar makes great 'banana paralyzers' and Marco is just fantastic. Premium liquor is included and we never had to ask for it; absolut, crown, jd, bailey's...everything.

And most importantly: the service. We have been to Mexico twice, Dominican Republic twice, Cuba and Jamaica...only the service in Jamaica at a luxury resort compared. The staff here are remarkable. Even the young lady (Denise) at the towel place is happy. A big hello goes out to Gregorio at the pool buffet at lunch...he was always ready with 3 bottles of wine for our group and took great care of the kids. Raymondo was great as well. Carlos and Tony that ran the pool activities were so much fun. They took time to learn your name and get to know you. And lastly...if you want to book a tour please go see Hector with Lomas tours at the convention centre. He took great care of us and would just show up in Puerto Morelos when he booked something for us to make sure we were happy, was there to meet us when we boarded a tour van, was there to say goodbye....we swear there is really 2 of him!

Other things we would like to see to make it even better: The lobby bar was not open for coffee in the morning until 10am and the restaurant until 7am...if you are an early riser and wanted a coffee or cappucino you either ordered room service or were out of luck.
We went knowing that this is a family place and the nightlife was non-existent but an outdoor courtyard with a bar area would be a nice place to hang out, talk and play cards or yahtzee with the kids.

We will be returning in 2013 with an even larger group!

we travelled as 3 couples on march 10-17 th. we booked platinum jr suite and received
room 1545 overlooking the hot tub and ocean check in was a breeze . the room was average but the view was the best we have had so far and we could not hear into the next room as others have said.we never met or seen a butler or never got a newspaper once or any treats
at night. but did use the internet for about 10 minutes total. i had emailed the resort a week ahead and requested an upper floor and did receive that. the drinks were very good at this resort and the breakfast at the main buffet good and lunch at the poolside buffet good.
suppers were hit and miss. I liked the marina the best..i had tempura shrimp that was excellent and very good beef there. the staff at this resort are very friendly from the grounds workers to the platinum staff. i was walking along the path by the lagoon and asked a grounds keeper about the crocs and he actually found one for me. very nice man. the barman that worked at the hottub bar was very nice also. we booked xel-ha through the resort and we had alot of fun. we booked snorkeling from the marina and it was excellent. the best snorkel trip i have ever been on....beautiful reef...we were there with no children but i love kids so they do not bother me in the least...i enjoy watching them have fun. as for the night live...we were up most mornings between 6-7 and after a full day of fun and sun we were not interested in late night partying...we went to the marina one night were they were having a dance and the dj was very nice and played all our requests while we danced and had a great time. i am not sure if there is a dance there every night but i heard of it going on at least 3 nights from other people.
i loved the beach and pool at this resort. not sure about the rock floor of the ocean as i only walk on the edge. the pool was beautiful and the hottub amazing...i enjoyed them all .
i must say that the grounds are beautiful at this resort, they do and amazing job...it is spotless.

Room Tip: room 1545 had a great view

Our group included 3 families with a total of 5 kids ages 9-17. We stayed at the El Cid from March 9-16th - prime time spring break. We arrived at the hotel around 11:30 or so on the 9th and check in went smoothly and the front desk staff was efficient and friendly to us (unlike some reviews I have read). We then talked briefly with the time share staff as they provided us with a map and resort overview as well as brief pitch to attend the longer pitch. She accepted our not now, maybe later and we were on our way after about 10 mintues (oh yeah, she also got us all drinks right away when we walked through the door, which was nice). We had emailed ahead about trying to get rooms reasonably close together and they were able to accomodate two of our families (one family was platinum - which helped for dinner ressies for a group of 11!).

We stayed in building 19 (rm 19302) and thought the room was nice and we had a view of the ocean from a distance, which was nice. The room was decent sized, the shower was really nice a big, which I liked. My only complaint about the room was it did not have enough drawer space - small issue in the big picture and we made due with our luggage and some shelves. Also, more towels would be nice, but they did bring more when we called. We only got the turn down service two of the nights when they bring extra towels - not sure why we kept getting missed, but again - not a huge issue in my book! The room was very clean and the fridge re-stocked daily. Also, we thought the beds were fine if you like a firmer bed, which we do. I slept well every night and enjoyed listening to the birds in the morning.

The pool is wonderful! The towel game was in full swing and needed given prime spring break time. My husband is an early riser and got us chairs by around 5:30am daily. I know that frustrates some, but we view it is a reality visiting Mexico at this time of the year. We usually start usiing th chairs by 8:30ish thought and use them all throughout the day unlike some that save them and then might show up in the afternoon! THe kids loved jumping off the cliff, but were not as wild about the slide, maybe because of their ages. They also had fun at the beach, which was nice and sandy. There were rocks in the water (not on the beach), but water shoes take care of that easily enough. More boogie boards would be great though as they were usually in short supply. There was also wait staff that walked around the pools and beach to get you drinks and they were great!

We thought the food was very good overall, including the sit down restaurants. We ate at all them and probably like the one in the main building the best (Alcazar, or something like that). The salsa and quacomole and coconut ice cream were our favorites. The kids like the food choices on the kids menu and thought the hamburgers were surprisingly good. They also had great desserts, especially the chocolate cake (I'm going to miss that!) - I have never had such good desserts at an all inclusive as we did at El Cid - and I have stayed at Riu's, Barcelos, Marivals etc. in the past. We also thought there were sufficient options each day. I espeically loved the grilled and steamed veggies every day!

My husband and I used the excercise room daily, which we liked. It opens at 7:00 and several days it was open a few minutes earlier.

This is a very family friendly resort with a fairly quite night life and no spring break college students- which was exactly what we were looking for. We found the staff to be very friendly and polite and the resort is well maintained. We would definitely recommend this place to others!

We stayed at this hotel for a friends wedding... The hotel was booked for all of us so we didn't have a choice of where to stay. There was about 50 people staying in our group for this wedding..
Depending on the building you were staying in.. We were in the last bulding closest to the beach with a beautiful view....The rooms were very different.
Friends of ours had a room that looked like they were staying at a different hotel.. It was beautiful! But our room was at best a 3 star room with a very uncomfortable cot like bed. The rooms were clean, but nothing fancy.
The biggest bummer about this hotel was the food.. Especially lunch, was terrible.
And by mid day 2 there were a few people in our group sick, by day 3 almost 10 people including myself were sick.
I don't think is the norm at this hotel, I'm sure it was an isolated incident, we did all seem to eat one meal in common.
But it put a damper on the trip for sure.
There are a lot of great things about this hotel, the beach, pool and grounds were all great and very clean, it just wasn't for us!
