“Fabulous accommodations and awesome staff”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

This was our 3rd time to Excellence - 2nd in Riviera Cancun, 1 in Punta Cana. While we loved Punta Cana, we find the food and the people even better in Riviera Cancun. The accommodations and restaurants are excellent (sorry for the pun) and we will definitely go back and recommend to our friends and family. Excellence never disappoints us.

Room Tip: We have not previously upgraded to Excellence Club but it may be worth it the next time.

Just returned from our 4th visit - it just gets better and better. The resort is still immaculate, everone is so friendly and helpful; it feels like being at home. Continued additions include fresh pizza's at the Sol bar every lunchtime, covered seating area by the beach BBQ, fresh coffee everywhere, new sunbeds across the resort. The service is unbeatable - everyone is so willing to do anything for the guests. Restaurants still lovely and some new menu changes. Some name checks for those who we found were so helpful: Mariana and Natascha from Guest Services, Antonio and Angel from Entertainment, Adela and Santiago in the Toscana restaurant, Adela in the Basmati restaurant, Martin in the Spice restaurant, Anthony and Leydi in the Martini bar, Diogenes - the best waiter ever - in the Chez Isabelle restaurant, and Salvadore in the nightclub. Magic place to stay, our 5th visit is already booked.

We really loved the hotel. The food, entertainment and service was great. The only thing I would say that would be a negative is that when I booked the VIP ocean front suite, as I was literally leaving with the bellman to go to my room they came out to tell me the king beds where booked and we had a room with two double beds. I didn't want the double beds only the king and they had a waiting list for the king rooms since this was a problem they had with other customers too. I paid an extra 150 dollars per night to go to a roof top terrace to get a king bed. They at first only offered 20 off for the upgrade which wasn't good enough or worth it and not doing me much a favor. We did enjoy the rooftop with the private hot tub and bed where we watched the stars come up etc. Loved that. Overall besides the room issue we loved it and enjoyed ourselves. Not much for shopping there onsite and didn't travel out of resort.

Room Tip: If you don't mind paying more go for the roof top terrace. We had dinner served up there with an...

Just returned from a one week vacation at this resort with two other couples. Normally it takes us a couple of days to wind down, but the flight on Air Transat Club Class was just excellent. My husband is a big guy, 6'6" and the seats were so comfortable, the service excellent, so when we landed and arrived at the Excellence we were already starting to relax.

We were greeted outside with a hot towel and champagne. Check-in was a breeze and minutes later we were whisked away to our room which was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We were very pleased with our room throughout our vacation including the service from the housekeeping staff. Never had a problem of any kind.

The entertainment staff, specifically Alphonso and Angel, were beyond great. Lots of fun, not obnoxious in any way and were sincere in their desire to please their vacationers. We witnessed them drop everything to race to the aid of someone who had slipped and fallen in the rain. Husband really enjoyed the daily Texas Hold Em Tournament. We also enjoyed the afternoon games and evening entertainment was far above expectations..

The pools and beach were both beautiful and enjoyable. We were not ever bombarded with people selling treasures on the beach. The bar service in both areas was always very efficient. Our group received great service from Anna in the Martini Bar each evening before dinner.

Breakfast each morning in the Barcelona was extensive, varied and fresh. We had lunch at the Grill Restaurant, in particular the calamari and Caesar salad and alternated with lunch in the Barcelona, with everything from salad to sushi to meats and seafood grill. Our favourite restaurants in the evening were the French and the Italian. Excellent! If you wanted to eat at a certain time, it was best to go early at 5:30 or 6:00, otherwise expect a wait until 7:30. We were on vacation, it mostly didn't matter to us.

I can honestly say I can't think of anything we might have needed or wanted that we didn't get or have. The service was superior, the food very good, the drinks, in particular the mojitos and mango margaritas delicious. We would not hesitate to return. Thank you Excellence, another extremely satisified customer!

Room Tip: We did not upgrade our room, had the standard junior suite and it exceeded our expectations. We had...

Overall I was very pleased with the hotel and would definitely return. The high points of the hotel were

the friendly yet professional levels of service throughout the hotel without any intrusion or overfamiliarity.
the open dining policy at the restaurants, yes usually you had to wait 15-30 min but with bars on hand this wasn't a problem
The Grill and Lobster pot were my favourite restaurants (although a couple of negatives below). The Brazilian special was just wonderful.
the quality of the rooms, they were spacious, comfortable and well furnished with plentiful towels, bathrobes and hot, hot water and provided mirth everytime I attempted to get in/on one - a footstool or ladder would have helped.
the gardens were beautiful and well tended
the standard of cleanliness was very high throughout.

There were negatives some of which I'd link to the hotel and some beyond on it's control

Hotel linked
I think if the management were to lay all the menus down side by side and count up the number that had cheese in (excluding the Pizzeria) they would be shocked. I'm not the only person who doesn't like/can't eat cheese. I was surprised to find dessert menus in which 3 out of 5 items included cheese.
Twice we weren't left 2 bathrobes - scandalous!!! One phone call, sorted.
Minibar wasn't refilled fully a couple of times - how awful! One phone call, sorted.
Given that the hotel was 40-60mins from nearest town a more frequent shuttle service would be appreciated.

Hotel//guest related
There were many pools at the hotel however only one was quiet, the remainder were dominated by louder guests (only a few though could be described as oafish). This meant there was a huge demand for the loungers round the quiet pool. Consequently if you hadn't gone down by 6.45AM (yes 6.45AM) you couldn't have a lounger in this area. The people reserving then often wouldn't turn up till upto midday. It would help if the hotel could look into increasing the quiet areas.

Wind
Yes the beach was windy and thus less attractive but this is hardly the hotel's fault so to penalise the hotel is unfair.

Finally I've stayed in All Inclusives of similar rating elsewhere in Mexico, in Barbados more than once and in Tobago and overall this is the best especially if you want to relax, eat well, drink (sensibly!) premium brands and feel you are being looked after try this one.

Room Tip: The hotel is quite spread out so if you have problems walking ask for spa 1 would add seemed very us...

Currently there at the moment on day 5 of holiday. Originally was booked into Riu Palace and changed last minute as hated the new refurb they done. Best decision ever to change to here. The resort is immaculate all rooms are spacious and decorated to a typical Mexican style.
The restaurants are amazing both service and food quality. Specifically the French which is outstanding, the hotel really stands out for both quality and choice of food compared to other hotels I have stayed in in Mexico. The fact you don't have to book is a far better system and cannot understand the groans about some reviewers it's obvious that if you choose to go for dinner at 7.30 to the most popular restaurant you will have a small wait. You have a choice eat at another or get a buzzer and go for a relaxing drink and within about 20 to 40 mins they will call you. Otherwise go down twenty mins before you want to eat to get a buzzer it really is that simple far better than other hotels that operate a booking system at 7am as I don't know what I want to eat then. The room service for food is excellent especially for breakfast if going out for the day. They even have Pizza takeaway at the bar. What also stands out is that if you fancy something that's not on the menu they will make it for you no problem.
The beach area and service is also really efficient the usual gripes about sun beds is the same on every holiday I have ever taken but what I do like us the hotel has plenty of beds around the grounds and beach so you will always find a spot somewhere. Unfortunately some people arrive at the beach mid morning and expect to get a prime spot with canopy it's really not going to happen on any popular holiday resort.
We have not upgraded to excellence Club so can't comment on value and is it worth it. What I would say is that the standard rooms and service are anything but standard so you won't be disappointed.
The pool areas are stunning and lazy river round the complex really does make the place feel like an oasis.
The entertainment so far has been far superior to any shows I have previously experienced on all inclusive holidays and on cruise ships.
To sum it up I have already been online looking at booking their resort in Dominican Republic for later in the year and fully intend to return to this resort on my next holiday to Mexico.

We stayed here in July last year. My girlfriend was so overwhelmed by how good the hotel is she cried.

Nuff said!

Oh, the only slight disappointment with this place is probably the beach with all the seaweed but the pools more than make up for it. Ps- Watch out if you go for a walk up it, as you might see some sights you weren't expecting at the nudist beach!
