“Love, love, love this resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

From the glass of champagne upon arrival to the last minute of our vacation this resort lived up to expectations, Excellence by name and excellent resort! The rooms were clean and very well stocked with toiletries. The mini bar was fully stocked with chocolate bars, wine, beer, water and pop. There were full bottles of liquor for those who wanted to mix themselves a wee cocktail and potato crisps to snack on. Anything used was replaced each day. Chocolate mints were on your pillow each night at the turn down service. The suites are all a decent size, not the largest I've been in but more than adequate. We were on the top floor of Block one with a nice view of the resort from the balcony. We would have booked the swim up suites but we were there with friends and there was no guarantee we could get rooms beside each other. If we were there as a couple we would definitely go that route. It's not a huge resort so everything is within easy walking distance. We had no trouble finding sun beds by the pool every day. We did walk along the beach a few times but we're not much for sunning there. All members of staff in this resort were pleasant and helpful. The first night we went to Basmati, the Indian restaurant, loved it and intended to go there again. The next night we went to Toscana, the Italian restaurant and thought we had really lucked out as we wanted to go back there as well. The third night we went to Chez Isabelle, the French restaurant and were blown away, this was one we were definitely going to go back to. We also went to Spice, the Japanese restaurant; the Grill and the Lobster House, all were very good, though the Lobster House was maybe a little stingy on the portion size. I'm a small person and I was left wanting so don't know how some big eaters felt. However, it did taste good and you could always go elsewhere for more if you really needed to. The night before leaving we went back to Chez Isabelle and we weren't disappointed, another fantastic meal. I particularly liked that there are no plastic identifier bands and you don’t have to make restaurant reservations. However, you may have a long wait if you go down after 7 p.m. I loved that many people dressed for dinner, it made everything seem much more special & was a pleasant change from the casual dressing that has become prevalent today. We used the buffet for most breakfasts and lunches and it was always good with pleasant, helpful service. I can also recommend the fajitas for lunch at the Lobster House. All in all we found nothing to complain about in this resort and only a few things that could have been improved. It would have been nice if everyone got a chance to try the floats for the lazy river. The same greedy people grabbed them every morning and stashed them beside or under their sun beds so only they could use them. We watched some keep them all day and not use them once. Also, we spent our days by the pool across from building 2, unfortunately that is a long way from any of the bars, so poolside waiter service was minimal. We were offered drinks at 10 a.m. but we had just arrived at the pool and weren't ready for anything and we weren't offered anything else until 3 p.m. That only happened on a couple of days but it is something that could be improved. We were there with friends who loved it every bit as much as we did and we all said we wished we had booked for two weeks instead of one. I'd recommend this resort for couples or groups of friends.

Room Tip: Blocks 1 and 2 are quiet and a short walk to anywhere in the resort.

We stayed at the excellence (all inclusive) from 2-5 to 2-10 and wished our stay was longer.
The resort is very well maintained with great design and spotless thru out. With daily activities, 10 restaurants each with its own cuisine, entertainment daily and nightly, pools, the ocean, bars (10 I think), and spa (highly recommended) all get a 10/10. Employees the best!!
After you check in talk to (entertainment) Angel. He is top shelf, knowledgeable and will help you with your Spanish if you like.Alfonso (also entertainment) is also the man to talk to, he's so funny (krazy!) they should give his own comedy show.
If you are heading pool side stop at the Cafe Kafe bar to see Felipe or Betsy for a drink.
When you have breakfast at Barcelona ask for Ramon to be your server, you won't be disappointed. His nickname is "Chacarron" and tell him Jim said hi.
To all I say SI'MON !!! we will be back.

Room Tip: Choose the junior suite

We booked this holiday a couple of weeks prior to going and must admit was a little apprehensive . After going to many other Caribbean resorts and being let down, all we ever wanted was the WOW, WOW factor. Well, this did not let us down.
Upon arrival we were greeted at reception with a cold towel and a welcoming glass of sparkling wine. Nice touch. We were then taken to our room (Junior Swim Up). This had everything we needed. All toiletries were supplied together with additional items. Mini bar again had everything you could possible want, even sweets and crisps. Room very clean and well presented. One of our requests was to have a sunny room and we were not let down. We were in Spa Block 2 and had sun from morning to about 3.30pm. Also being near the spa you can hear the soothing and relaxing music. Two sunloungers were provided together with a hammock and outside jacuzzi
Pools were fantastic and the good thing about this resort is that you do not have to be on top of one another whilst sunbathing. If you want to be with the croud or just by yourselves, then the choice is yours
Food was delicious and you had numerous restaurants to choose from. One other good thing is that you did not had the laborious task of booking your table in advance
Beach/Sea was not the best we have seen but it served its purpose. At least there were plenty of sun beds together with umberella's for shade. All beach and pool towels provided.
Staff were absolutely brilliant and would do anything for you (something that either makes or breaks a hotel) They would always smile and make you feel special
All in all this was a most relaxing, enjoyable and unforgettable 11 nights and definately shall return

Room Tip: If you are looking for a tranquil room then pick one of the Spa rooms in either blocks 1, 2 or 3. Th...

We went to the Excellence Riveria for 2 weeks in July 2012 for our honeymoon and it really was excellent we did not want to leave the place. Some places you go for 2 weeks and you be glad to get home but not here, I cant stress how excellent it was.

We had been on a few all-inclusive holidays before and they were just okay with food not great and drinks average so we were a little bit apprehensive about booking an all-inclusive package again, but had heard excellent reports about Cancun and Riveria having best all-inclusive packages. So after much discussion with our travel agent we decided to book the Excellence Riveria and soooooooooooo glad we did it was the heaven we needed after a very hectic period in lead up to our wedding.

It is quite a long journey from Ireland and the UK to Cancun but worth it when you get there as the hotel isn't that far from the airport which is a huge bonus as speaking to some others in our transfer bus said there hotel was over an hour away which you don't need after a long plane journey.

When you are in transfer bus on way to hotel and travelling up some terrible roads where the bus driver is navigating through the worst pot-holes you will ever see you are wondering whats going on and you get worried about what the hotel might be like, but when you arrive at the gates you just see paradise and as you drive up the driveway it just looks pure quality and the excitement hits you as you cant wait to see inside.

As you enter the building you are greeted with a cold glass of champagne or water, a piece of fruit if you want and lovely cold face cloth which is refreshing and a nice touch. The reception area itself is beautiful with marble everywhere and very helpful staff. Check-in is easy and doesn't take long and there is a bell boy to take you to your room and transfer your luggage for you. Depending on where your room is it can be quite a walk but lovely as you walk through the hotel grounds and see everywhere and it is amazing and very beautiful and well kept.

We were staying in one of the swim out rooms which I would defo recommend as you might not use it much at the start but you end up using it on days when you don't want to be around the pool and just have time to yourself as a couple. There are two loungers and a hammock, and you have direct access to pool or as where were stayed the lazy river which is great as you can float along the whole way around it right back to outside your room which is class. The other thing about staying around this end is it is peaceful and right beside the spa you also have waiters going around offering drinks which is good. By way there was a nice touch when we entered our room as honeymooners they had this banner on the door for us and then champagne and fruit for us.

The room was class, lots of room with great shower, good toiletries, nice bed, lovely seating area both inside and outside on the porch, great tv and fantastic mini-bar. Mini-bar had everything we wanted and you can even tailor it for yourself if you want by asking the staff member filling up mini-bar to stock it with more of whatever you want or by replacing some items that you don't like with ones you do.

Room service is also excellent, as we had breakfast in our room some mornings when fancied a ly-in and we had food at other times throughout the day when we fancied and it usually took about half hour to come or in very busy times 45mins. The menus are great for room service and probably best room service we have ever had.

Food is amazing in the hotel, so much choice and caters for everyone. The buffet breakfast in the morning when you go down for it is amazing such a wide and varied selection of foods. We loved the fresh made omelettes in the morning when you can pick all ingredients and they cook it in front of you, they were just yummy. So much choice you really are spoiled. Never had a long wait at all either for breakfast think maybe 5-8mins was most we ever waited to be seated.

The various restaurants we ate at were just fantastic something different every night and beautiful food. Our favorites were the French and Thai restaurants. The steak in the french restaurant is just yummy and staff are great in all restaurants. Defo recommend getting the chef show in the Thai restaurant where they cook in front of you. Never waited long to get in any night much, anytime we did they give you a buzzer which is great and you can go have a drink and then they buzz you when table is ready/available. The Mexican theme night is a must also very nice the way everything is set-up and food is lovely. There is excellent buffet down on the beach also during the day. Basically you can have food at anytime during the day there are options available all the time. One tip when in restaurants and they offer you the wine menu, just ask for the house wine as it is free and included in your package and usually the house wine is nice enough.

Drinks are great also, plenty of bars serving whatever drinks you want, cocktails, wine, beers, spirits etc... Entertainment is good also with shows on various nights in the arena area with the best being the Michael Jackson show which is stuffed out so be early to ensure you get a good seat. You would really think it was Michael Jackson himself with all moves identical.

Main Pool area is very busy so make sure you are there early to get good loungers, lots of people head down early put pool towels down on loungers and then head for breakfast which we did quite a lot to ensure you get good loungers. Beware the X-Lounge though, as it is just off the pool area and they are beds which are cool to ly on but there is a reason they are available at times and that is because they must be located in the hottest place around there as we lay there a few days and whilst it was lovely we got quite burned despite having high factor sun cream on. They get no shade there at all but the beds are class for lying on instead of loungers. There are a few pools around the main pool area, but in the main one where the pool bar is it is lovely, always quite full of people. The pool bar is lovely as when it gets too hot you just nip in for a dip and then head for a drink at the bar, a soft drink or a lovely cocktail or even a beer. Cocktails are class there and Lorenzo was the best at making them and for service, that man works hard and is always smiling. It was disappointing to hear a few days this particularly loud group of people who were around the pool bar being quite rude to him and the staff as they are under pressure to serve everyone and don't usually have to wait long for a drink at all.
The pool bar area can be quite loud at times depending if there are groups of couples or whatever there, but usually it is fine and you meet lots of friendly couples there from both the UK and US and that is pretty much the way at all the bars throughout the hotel.

The beach area is good also and loungers fill up fast there as well however not quite as fast as the pool area. with the loungers down there sometimes it can be difficult to get ones that are always in the sun or shad depending on what you are after. The beach is lovely and so is the promenade. However we tended to be in and around the pool area more often than not, due to handiness for drinks and a dip. Waiter service around the pool and beach area is good but a bit slower down at the beach. The beach towels available to everyone are great for lounging and lying on. There are various activities on also every day at one of the pool bars like cocktail making, fruit carving, quizzes etc... really is excellent as you can do as little or as much as you want every day

The atmosphere around the whole place is lovely, very chilled and relaxed with couples everywhere enjoying themselves, which is what we loved as we didn't want a hotel with loads of kids running around so it was great that way.

Location wise the hotel is excellent, we noticed this even more when we went into Cancun and in the hotel zone all you see is all these hotels right next door to each other and it looks as if they are all merged into one and they must be sharing the beach also. After seeing that we were even more glad we stayed at the Excellence as we wanted relaxation after our wedding and we got it as the excellence is just a nice distance from downtown Cancun not too far and not too close as can imagine it being very noisy down there no matter what hotel you are at in hotel zone. So glad we listened to our travel agent advice and went with Excellence as otherwise we had been looking at some of the hotels in hotelzone. The time we went into town the Excellence arrange a taxi driver to take you there and he takes you wherever you want to go (we went to Hardrock cafe and shops) and stays with you and takes you back which is great.

We did excursions to Xplore not too far away also for transfer from hotel and it was amazing defo recommend it as we did zip-lining, cave rafting, driving buggies underground etc... was just fantastic day out. Went swimming with dolphins which was really great day out also. Did many other excursions also in our second week and there is loads on offer.

As regards tipping, you are told that you don't need to as it is included in your all-inclusive package, however the staff work so hard and the service is that good that you really do want to tip them from time to time. You even see them in their uniforms underwater in the pools with snorkelers on extensively cleaning and scrubbing the pool areas. We usually tipped waiters at breakfast and dinner wherever we ate and room service.

We were so sad when it was time to leave the hotel as it was just so amazing and we are so glad we went here for our Honeymoon. We will defo heard here again at some stage and cant wait to head back. It is actually quite noticeable that a lot of people who you speak to when you are there are their honeymooners or repeat visitors which is always a good sign of a place that people liked it that much that they keep coming back to it

Would I recommend it? ABSOLUTELY YES (stop thinking and just book it you wont regret it)
Is it ideal for Honeymooners? YES

Hope you find this review useful and have a wonderful time at the hotel if you go.

Room Tip: Go for a swim out room, they are excellent if you are there for two weeks you might not use it much...

Our trip was actually at the end of January 2012. This was our second visit to the Excellence, as we had such a great time on our honeymoon in November 2010. We met many couples on our first trip who were frequent returners so we decided to join the club!

After a long flight, we were exhausted and hungry. The concierge had no problem keeping an eye on our bags while our room was readied since we arrived early. We walked straight to the beach after drinking our welcome champagne. Our first stop was Oregano, the pizza grill. The pizza really hit the spot and each pizza is a nice size for one person. This time our room was the closest one to the gym on the first floor. It was easy access to everything. We had a swim up suite that was secluded and faced the spa area. Last time our swim up suite was facing the ocean. Both locations are nice. Just be forwarned that the pools do not connect to the pool with the swim up bar, so you can't just swim from your room to the drinks. Here is a bullet pointed list of things I would point out:
- The French restaurant, Chez Isabelle is AMAZING! It is the perfect place for a romantic dinner. At every restaurant you can order whatever you want...multiple entrees. They almost encourage it so you can try as much as you like.
- The breakfast buffet has enough choices for even the finicky eater, complete with an array of bizarre juices to try.
- Room service is wonderful. I would highly recommend the fajitas and my husband ordered the french toast almost every day! Tipping is not required by $1 here and there goes a LONG way!
- The club is a bit lame, but we are not really partiers. Some people mentioned everything shutting down early. This is true, but trust me...it's an all-inclusive. After drinking all day, the last thing you want to do is stay up until 3 a.m. partying. You'll be exhausted enough by 11 p.m.
- The shows are pretty good. I highly recommend the Michael Jackson show.
- There is something going on everyday. Check the hotel newsletter sent to your room every day and the wooden board by the pools for activities.
- Gym: It's nice. Use it for a good pick-me-up. The equipment is nice...Precor and Cybex stuff.
- You can order food poolside, but only during certain times. Check with a server dressed in white clothes.
- Lobster House: Good restaurant. The bisque is good. This is a nice restaurant for an evening meal on a relatively wind-free night.
-Basmati: The indian restaurant. The food there was very good and you can order to different spice levels.
- Spa: Definitely go the spa. I missed out on my first trip, but made sure to go there last time. The hydrotherapy circuit was included with my massage and it made me feel so relaxed!
Medical Services: Normally I wouldn't mention this, but I needed to use them because I was stung in the toe by a sea urchin. The pain was intense, but the on-site doctor gave me a shot to help me out. Luckily, he didn't need to send me to the hospital. He worked with us on payment (easily negotiable) then wheeled me back to my room, as the shot made me sleepy. If you're iffy on medical services in Mexico, don't be at this resort. They know what they are doing if you injure yourself.
- Activities: There are plenty of things to do here. You will never be bored. There are classes, sports, a trip to town each evening, bike tours, scuba lessons, hobi cats and more. There is a lady who sells pottery that you can paint yourself. This has come in handy on rainy days. When you are finished they make it look a bit cleaner for you, then laquer it so you have a nice souvenir.
- Beach Vendors: Never saw 'em. If any even walked past us, they never stopped.
- Foreigners: I meet a lot of British people here, as well as Canadians. Everyone is very friendly. I've only noticed a couple topless sunbathers but it didn't bother me.
- Seat Saving: On our first trip, we did not experience this, but on our last one, we did. We went by the rule that if we got to a chair early and there was a towel there, but no person, we moved it. We only got harrassed by one group of people. After a small argument where I informed them there was NO seat saving allowed at the resort, they all left us alone. Beach chairs are more difficult to get than poolside accomodations.
- Beach: The beach is nice. A tractor cleans up any seaweed deposit regularly. The ocean is generally pretty calm and it's a nice place to sail on a hobicat. I think it was $10 for an hour and the guys who run the stand give you lessons before you venture out.
- Excursions: There is an excursion desk at the resort. I usually book on websites because it's a bit cheaper and it's the EXACT same excursion. They pick you up at the hotel. I would recommend the Selvatica zipline and cenote excursion.
- Other restaurants: I still have never been to the mexican restaurant or the japanese place. I have heard the Japanese place is amazing and the hibachi is the most fun, but you need to get there first, as seating is extremely limited. No reservations are required anywhere.
- Rooms: The only type we've stayed in is the swim up suite. On our first trip, the room became a bit damp after 4-5 days. I think it was because the room faced the ocean and got a lot of incoming moisture from the surf. Our last room didn't have this issue. Be careful of the shower doors, though. They don't go to the floor and it's very easy to flood your room by accident if the shower head is facing the wrong way (trust me, I know...). The beds are a bit hard - my only complaint.
Anniversary/Wedding: A welcome basket and champagne are included and it's free! Plus you get a banner on your door, which makes it nice to identify your room when you stumble home drunk.
- Security: No one is allowed on the property unless they are expected and on "the list" at the security shack. We always ask the shuttle drivers about the safety in Mexico. They tell us it's safe in the resort areas because they make so much money for Mexico that the criminals don't mess with the area. Most of the violence is in the northern border areas and in Mexico city. If you ask some locals, they're usually pretty honest about where to go and where not to go.
- Shuttle: We have never booked the hotel shuttle. We use USA Transfer. They are reasonably priced and very easy to find at the airport. The drivers are very helpful.

I can't think of anything else to add, except that this is a top notch place and definitely worth a visit! If anyone else tells you otherwise, they are insane.

Room Tip: Rooms by the spa section are quieter. Rooms by the pools make you feel more in the middle of everyt...

Here are some of the experiences that left us disappointed.

When my husband arrived to join me two days after my arrival, the Reception treated him like an unwelcome guest. I had been to Reception the day prior to tell them he was joining me and even booked a taxi through the hotel to pick him up. They made him pay $1100 before allowing his bag to be taken to the room. Welcome indeed.

When my husband and I arrived at Reception the following day to discuss this issue, we stood watching while a staff member used the reception scissors to trim the hair on her arms!! She was too busy to deal with us.........

One day while my husband was diving, I felt unwell and went to the room to lay down. I left the do not disturb card in the door lock. At 5 p.m. someone tried to enter the room and was barred by the security lock. When I got up to look, there was no one in the hall but the do not disturb card was gone. We didn't get it back during our stay.

The turn down housekeepers left the door to the room open after 6 p.m. My room was full of mosquitoes after. I understand leaving the door open for maid safety also but common sense should prevail here. I spent the rest of the evening swatting.

The Guest Services Manager Marianna tried to help by scheduling room cleaning. On the first day all was OK. On the second day our room wasn't made up at all. After that we had make up service up to 5 p.m. Sorry, but an hour later they came to do the turn down. She scheduled a lovely evening for us at the Toscana restaurant to ease the annoyance - thank you.

With greater levels of service there are entries required into guest rooms, we understand. One day a housekeeping supervisor entered the room after I went out to the corridor to see who tried to come in. She said she was checking something on the balcony. On that particular day while I was there, 5 different staff wanted in. Housekeeping, housekeeping, mini bar, supervisor and one I can't remember.

We liked so much about this hotel but have serious concerns about organization and security.

In general, the staff we met were more than pleased to serve. The grounds and room were delightful. The spa services exceptional. Food and drink were superior to most other resorts we have tried. Beach great - pool outstanding.

Hotel management needs to know what experiences their guests have. Great facilities cannot make up for cold, indifferent or strange relations.

We just got back from our honeymoon at Excellence Sunday night February 10, 2013. Like you, we did our research and found Excellence to be highly rated and recommended as the resort in the Mayan Riviera area. I would have to admit I was a little worried about some reviews but the positive reviews by far outweighed the negative. Simply put, this is an amazing resort – what is even more amazing is the staff. The staff goes above and beyond; they are professional, courteous and overall the best I have ever experienced and I travel ten months out of the year. The resort is beautiful, the grounds are well kept, the rooms are extremely clean, the food is great and once again, the staff is amazing.

We decided on the Excellence package and were not disappointed. We opted for the ocean view swim-up suite. Upon arrival we were taken to the Excellence Club for check-in and were greeted with a refreshing glass of sparkling wine. The greatest advantage of the Excellence package for us was the expedited check-in/check-out, private pool area (heated pool) and private beach area. For us the additional cost was well worth it and we will do it again - although we will probably get a room on the second or third floor.

If you want or need anything simply ask. The staff is more than willing to help; they take great pride in doing their job. Please remember one thing – TIP – the staff works extremely hard to take care of you – tip them, they deserve it. It is customary to tip in Mexico, especially when the staff works as hard as they do here at this resort.

I would have to admit we did hear a few people say they did not like some of the dishes at some of the restaurants. Remember, there is plenty to select from – if you don’t like it, try something else. We decided to try a different restaurant each night, while we thought the French restaurant was our favorite we also enjoyed the Mexican restaurant. Overall, we really liked the food and enjoyed going to a different restaurant every night. Breakfast: the buffet was great, anything and everything you could imagine. Lunch: each day there was a great BBQ on the beach, check it out before you go to one of the restaurants. Room service is included so if you get hungry simply pickup the phone.

Activities: wow – there is always something to do. Each night a list of activities is placed in your room for the following day. Just about anything and everything you would associate with a beach vacation was available and much more.

Most of our days were spent hanging out around the pool relaxing and meeting people followed by a late afternoon nap and then dinner. We left the resort twice, once to go to Chitzen Itza and once for a night out in Playa Del Carman – other than that, we did not feel the need to leave – everything we wanted or needed was available to us.

I know there are a few negative reviews on here regarding the resort. All I can say is you cannot make everyone happy (although the staff will try their best) and some people are going to find something to complain about no matter what. Our stay at the Excellence resort was everything we expected and more. Personally, we could not find anything wrong with Excellence and are looking forward to our next trip back.

A special Thank You to Moises at the Excellence pool bar.

Room Tip: Ocean view Excellence package in bldg. 7 - great sun during the day.
