“Serenity & Service Define Zoetry La Bonita”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013

My wife and I stayed at Zoetry La Bonita from July 28 to August 4, 2013. We have travelled to the Mayan Riviera extensively but this was our first time at this resort. We chose Zoetry because of its small size, excellent service, and for the high-end dining. It lived up to most (but not all) of our expectations.

First, the private pickup at the Airport was amazing and made us feel special. Upon arrival at the hotel (20 minute drive) we were met by cold beverages and a personal concierge who toured us around the hotel and gave us the lay of the land. Our room wasn't ready so we enjoyed a nice lunch (see dining later on in review) and by then our room was ready. Our room was amazing. Huge, beautiful, so incredibly clean, and just perfect. Although we did have an ocean view it was partially blocked by another building (our room was Cerdena -- rooms are not numbered). We enjoyed the room thoroughly. Loved housekeeping and loved the nightly turn-down service.

The Grounds:
Small, beautiful, lots of wildlife (birds, iguanas, other lizards, and two crocodiles -- they stay to themselves). The pool is magnificent as is the poolside service and you never need to worry about getting chairs, umbrellas or service). The beach is not amazing. The sand is nice but the water is not crystal clear or blue and there is a lot of plant life floating around---it's better to walk 2km down the beach and the water is way nicer).

Dining
There are three restaurants but every night one is closed (usually the grill -- it was only open 2 of our 7 nights). So we are at La Canoa and Kax most nights. Both offer exellent service and menus (we, like many other guests, couldn't distinguish between the food quality or service at Kax and La Canao). La Canao is fancier, has a slightly more gourmet menu and requires nicer clothing to get in. Both restaurants were good, but neither were amazing and unfortunately the menus stay the same for one-month at a time, which we found quite boring...a true five star resort would have creative chefs that would change the menu daily (us, and many guests we spoke to found they got bored by the end of their stays too with the food). The service at the restaurants is truly five star.

Lastly, remember to tip everywhere...although never stated, it is clearly an expectation by all staff. We tipped the waiters, pool guys, activity people, and housekeeping. I never felt bad about tipping as the service is amazing everywhere.

If you are looking for total service, relaxation, and serenity this is the place to go. Do not come here if you want to party, there is no entertainment (except for the harp player and guitarists who wander around the restaurants).

We loved it, but because of the limited food options onsite (you can go to other AMResorts if you wish) we would not return.

The staff was the nicest and friendliest ever, the spa amazing, the views excellent from all angles. However, the water at the beach was disgusting! The worst we've ever encountered in the Caribbean! Unfortunately the hotel beach acts like a cup de sac for the water current which brings in all the see weed, algae and rubbish (plastic bottles, bags, all sorts of trash!) which made it smelly and impossible to even have a nice walk on. Such a disappointment! There was a tractor continually raking the part directly in front of the hotel to keep it clean, but walking anywhere beyond was like walking through a dump. The water was murky and brownish green and made it impossible for anyone to swim in. We therefore had to swim in the pool or in the spas Thalasso pool which was free with our package. Another unfortunate problem is that there is a construction site with cranes and bulldozers right next to the ideallic, serene spa area making a horrible racket. They were just starting so this will go on for some time. I just had to share this with beach lovers as this is not the place to come if you're looking for transparent Caribbean water.

Room Tip: Go for the upper floor if you want more peace and quiet. We stayed in a lower floor and had first a...

It was lovely not being in the midst of a large chaotic resort. The rooms and grounds were lovely and maintained. Nice not having to worry about getting a nice spot at the pool or a table at one of the yummy restaurants. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Victor and Miguel were the best serves poolside and beach side! Both were always smiling and took great care of us. We enjoyed that the resort was low key and didn't have the Las Vegas feel to it. My one complaint would be, that there was not a restaurant at night that you could eat in wearing a t-shirt and swim trunks or a coverup. Some nights after an excursion, you don't want to have to get "fluffed and puffed". We ended up having to order room service. We would definitely return!!

We chose this place based on a recommendation of a friend. We are in our 30s and were celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary. This place is serene and beautiful. The people are very friendly. They really do make you feel like a celebrity without making you feel uneasy. You can tell the employees really enjoy their jobs. The food at breakfast was delicious and fresh. Lunch was always poolside so we would eat several small plates. The spicy ribs are BOMB! I was eating them everyday! Dinner at la Canoa was very very tasty. A couple of dishes were just ok but other dishes blew my mind so it def made up for the others. Yes, this is an AI resort. But please bring singles to show appreciation of the service from the waiters , bartenders, spa ladies (if you go I recommend the diamond scrub), and for the women that make up your room. About the room, we stayed at Damasco. The room was beautiful. Hard bed? Yes. But we like firm mattresses. They're good for your backs! I wish we would've had a king bed instead of 2 full/queen sized beds but it didn't bother us that much since we didn't call the front desk to change location. We didn't use the tub either since we were always poolside or at the bar/restaurants. We loved this place do much we wanted to stay another night but our airline wanted to charge $1000 pp to change flight details. No thanks. Why didn't I rate Zoetry a 5? The pool area wasn't flawless. Missing tiles here and there. Small details like that are not overlooked at 5 * resorts. The beach area wasn't the Cancun Caribbean blue we love. But that's no fault of Zoetry. But I am a beach girl and had to spend the entire day poolside which I didn't mind since Victor (our waiter) took care of us the whole time. Definitely recommend this place to couples that want to unwind. If you want rowdiness, do not come here. We LOVE to party so I was worried at first but we were so relaxed every night that we were sleeping by 11pm LOL.

Having stayed at the Zoetry Agua a couple of years ago, we really wanted to try out this sister property. We arrived at the resort and Rafael was waiting outside the lobby for us to greet us and welcome us to the resort the way an old friend would wait outside their home for you. He gave us a quick tour and walked us to our suite. We were placed in Atenas, a master suite with a plunge pool and a fabulous view. That greeting set the tone for our week at this resort. Like Rafa, the rest of the staff was extremely warm and gracious without being overly solicitous.
Each day we would go out to either the pool or the beach and were greeted by a friendly staff person who would quickly set up our chairs. At the pool, they would give us double cushions, which really is a treat. Pool and beach drink service was very good and although we did tip, we saw that others did not appear to be tipping and were getting the same level of service. Special shout out to Miguel at the pool! His huge smile and great attitude really helped make our week more special.

We enjoyed all of the food offerings at the resort – especially La Canoa where we ate three times. Really outstanding service and food. I think my favorite was the lamb. Also the chocolate dessert with salty caramel sauce and icecream was just amazing. We also enjoyed the food at Kaax - shout out to Eddy, one of our favorite waiters, who went out of his way to even present us with a special dessert on our last night.

We did the sunset sail, which was very relaxing and a lot of fun. Especially amusing was when they handed out binoculars as we sailed past the clothing optional beach at another resort. (See what happens when you mix champagne with adults on a sail boat?) We also did a 3.5 hour snorkel trip on the same catamaran. Not sure that I would totally recommend that trip – but that is because I really don’t like playing “follow the leader” with a guide. I would rather just explore the reef on our own, but that wasn’t really an option. The trip was well run, the lunch served was great and the crew was professional -- but I just didn’t love that style of snorkel trip.

We had a very fun wine tasting with Miguel the sommelier. After that, I had a new favorite red wine which it turned out was on the house list so I drank if for the rest of the trip. We spent time in the library with Jimmy who took the time one evening to give us a great lesson in tequila, the process and the different types of tequila. We also spent some time in the evenings at Hippos bar listening to live music in the evenings. There were as singer/guitar player duo that was really fun to listen to and made for the perfect end to our day. We did have the opportunity to meet the general manager Valter. Upon meeting him, it was clear that it was his warm and gracious nature that was setting the tone for the whole resort team. He runs a tight ship of which he can be proud.

Housekeeping was immaculate. In fact, we never saw them at all but magically our room was always in top shape. At the beginning of the week, Rafa asked when we wanted our room turned down and I think that as a result at 830 each night, our room was turned down . They even surprised us with a rose petal bubble bath on our last night with candles creating a path to the tub and a flower filled swan towel creation on our bed.

Before arriving at the resort, I had a couple of concerns based on other tripadvisor reviews I had read – let me address those in case others might share them:

The beds: Others complained that the beds were too hard. We found the bed to be firm but very comfortable.

The beach/ocean: We were not expecting crystal blue water and white sand – but I was concerned about the seaweed. I thought they meant that there was a lot of seaweed growing along the edge of the ocean that you had to wade through. That is not the case. There are pieces of sea weed floating in the water – sort of like dried straw. This did not prevent us from swimming in the ocean. We are admittedly more pool people than beach people though so the seaweed was not a deal breaker for us. Also, yes, there is a tractor that goes back and forth cleaning up the seaweed that collects on the shore. Others have complained about that but it did not really bother us at all and if you walk up the beach to other resorts you can better appreciate what the beach would look like without that tractor.

The mosquitoes: Really not a problem for us. In fact, each evening they would walk around spraying for bugs behind the suites. The only complaints I heard about bugs was from some people who went out to the beach right after a rain storm – when the storm was over, the sand fleas apparently get bad and those guests had a lot of bites. We did not experience any bug issue though.

Overall, we had a wonderful time. We enjoyed meeting the other guests, watching the iguanas, interacting with the staff and just enjoying the ambiance of this very relaxing resort. As others have said, do not choose this resort if you need a lot of activities and hub bub. This is really just a place to chill out. We would definitely go back.

Just spent four nights at Zoetry with another couple, and we had a wonderful time. Food was fantastic and the quiet, peaceful atmosphere was just right. Like all the other reviews mention, this is not the place for nightlife or group activities. This is time to refresh and revive and enjoy being pampered. You do need to make sure you reserve activities as soon as you arrive. My one complaint is the lack of communication regarding the need to book things like the catamaran cruise, hydrotherapy session and Temazcal (Mayan ceremony) right away, and there is lack of clarity about what is included or not. They are all worth it but you must book a good bit ahead of time and consider your options. Resort coupons turned out to be useless because of the way they structure things, so we felt a little duped there. Still managed to get a pretty good deal on spa services though, and it was worth it. It is so quiet and private. You basically have the place to yourself.
Also agree with another review that the food service could be slow sometimes, but we never really minded as you're sitting there with the breeze and view lingering over a delicious meal, so you can't really complain. Plus the waiters were all so nice with good senses of humor. They were unbelievably accommodating. A special shout out to Antonio and Jose Louis in Kaax, Victor at the pool, and yoga in the mornings on the pier with Gaby was great too.
Beds were super comfortable for us, and I have to mention the food again, especially the Sobayon dessert and fresh guacamole at lunch every day.
We would definitely return as this is a quality vacation experience if you are looking to truly unwind and relax with absolutely no worries.
And don't forget your shoes for Canoa at night!

We stayed here for two weeks and i can honestly say it was unbelievable! The hotel is exquisite, luxury wouldn't half describe this piece of paradise. There is some beautiful gardens around the resort and an amazing beach with pier for the different cruises and water activities the hotel privately offers to its guests. All staff were very friendly and went out of their way to accommodate any requests we had, be that a little change in the menu or recommending places to visit, they were very attentive. The hotel offers a range of relaxing activities such as sunset cruises and cigar making as well as snorkeling and a range of tours to the Mayan ruins. The spa also offers a range of very relaxing activities including a Mayan purification ceremony which leaves you feeling reborn and fresh another unforgettable experience which i would deffinately recommend if you are staying here. Breakfast was delicious a very good menu and i must say the Mayan honey was possibly the best honey I've ever tried! I must give my respects to Raoul the head waiter in the restaurant Kaax, he puts allot of effort and passion into the food and service of the restaurant and was an amazing waiter! Apart from the food and beauty of the hotel, the staff definitely made this holiday as amazing as it was the people of mexico are very friendly and a piece of them have come back with me to Ireland, an amazing experience that wont be forgotten!
