I went to Azul July 15-20. The resort is beautiful. I went with 35 family members to celebrate my grandma's 80th birthday. We were greeted with champagne and towels in the lobby and went to lunch at Blue while we waited for our rooms. The service was a little slow, but it's not like we had anywhere we had to get to. Our room (206) had a great view of the ocean and pool. The bed was very comfortable, and there was cable in the rooms with a couple American networks. I thought the bathrooms were nice enough. The sinks are those big bowl sinks that sit on the counter. Our room also had a great little balcony with a table and chairs, very fun for room service.

We loved the swim-up bar in the pool! We also had a great time lounging in the beach beds and hammocks. Some of our group went on the snorkeling trip and enjoyed that too. We ate at both of the main restaurants and the food was good. The sandwiches at the cafe were good as well. The tequila bar was a lot of fun too. It wasn't crowded, and Juan the bartender was fun.

Now the bad part of the trip: Right in the middle of our trip was Hurricane Emily. The staff kept us up to date about the storm's progress, and there was a big meeting about the evacuation plan and procedures. We were evacuated to an elementary school in Cancun. I admit it was less than glamorous there. I won't get in to details because most likely there won't be another hurricane for quite some time. Although the evacuation center wasn't what we had hoped for on our vacation, the staff kept everyone positive and it was a safe place. Sergio encouraged everyone to play games and sports. There were 2 staff members in each room, and it was just for guests of the hotel.

When we got back to the hotel, there was no power, but they had a generator running to make mixed drinks :) and for lights in the bar and restaurant. The power and water came on by the next morning and it returned to normal.

Overall, we created a lot of memories (how many people can say they survived a hurricane?) and had a good time. The staff is excellent, especially Luz. My only recommendation is to avoid hurricane season! :)

vacationed at the Azul from July16-24. We had to evacuate due to hurricane Emily on the 17. The staff and hotel manager Raoul were absolutely wonderful. Raoul kept us informed which made us relax. We were allowed to return on the 18.

...book a deluxe room, not superior , deluxe rooms have a king size bed or two doubles, very spacious, extremely clean , did not see any bugs inside rooms.
...bathroom is very clean, separate shower stall, bidet . sink and counter is right outside , which we found more convenient . Large armoire like closet with shelves, we took extra plastic hangers.

....both restaurants have excellent food, even snack bar serves excellent steak sandwiches

...we were in villa 6 top floor, beautiful ocean view, no sewer smell, don't brush your teeth with the tap water, they provide plenty of bottled water.

...we were also in villa 2 after Emily, on the bottom floor, still had
a beautiful view,if you close window in bathroom, no sewer smell

.... I don't understand why so many people are complaining about the slow service in the restaurants, we never experienced this and we were a party of six. The staff is especially attentive if you are courteous, I did notice some tourists were rude, hence the slow service.

....beach is beautiful and sand is powdery, some seaweed but it is cleaned regulary, water is nice and warm

....Met some wonderful people during our stay in the shelter, special thanks to Reuben and Jorge for taking care of us in the shelter, and also to Raoul, for being such and amazing Manager. Special hello to Melanie, Ramtin,Roberto and family, Colleen and Cathy, and Zack and Tabitha.

My husband and I stayed at Azul with our child in May. We have been all over Mexico and stayed in many different resorts. The service was really bad in the food area. So bad that we will never go back. The beach was full of seaweed and I know down the beach it is much nicer. It was far from everything, my fav town playa del carmen. The food was just ok. Claudia was the best thing about this resort. The rooms were simple and cheap. BEWARE it is a timeshare and you will "win" a trip back. They try to get you to buy into the chain but don't it's a rip off!!!

We arrived at the Azul about 9:30am on Saturday the 9th. We were greeted by Julio, Reuben, and Jorge with champagne and a cold minty towel. The view from the lobby was incredibly beautiful. We had been awake since 2:00am for our early flight and were tired and hungry. We found ourselves a table beside a swinging bed and ordered our lunch where we ate and rested. At about 11:30 we were told our room was ready to get into which made us very happy not to have to wait until 3:00 check in time.

The room was very nice and not near as small as we were expecting from other reviews. We even had a roll-away bed for our 20 year old son to be in the room. We were in villa 607, and our other travel companions were in villas 608, 609, and 610. We were very convenient to all the activities and the view was breathtaking.

We spent most of our days at the main bar. We had the swinging bed and table beside it every day and rarely left except for our swims in the crystal clear waters of the Carribean Sea. We used the kayaks (to go out other than swimming you need to get a $2.00 bracelet, it is a national park, the bracelet is good for your entire stay), we snorkeled there, but mostly relaxed with a noodle in the water. The beach butlers were there for every need. Gabriel, Alejandro, Fabio, Fernando, and all the others are not bad on the eyes!!!

Because of the smallness of the Azul, we met many new friends that we enjoyed every day we were there. We will continue our friendship with a couple from Belleville, Ill. Everybody was fun.

Cesar and oh my gosh, cant think of the other bartender's name, (I think it was Iloy) always happy and would bring beers over balanced on top of his head. They were there to bring drinks to us at the table or in the pool. Try the "Miami Vice" or the "Mango Rita".....ohhh chihuahua!!!!

We ate at the Asian Restaurant and the Blue Restaurant every night. The wait staff was always there for you...we thought the food was a little slow, but after talking to Mr. Lubo (one of the owners) we found that every meal at the Azul should take no less than 1hr and 15 min (the European way). That way you sit and talk to your partner. You should take advantage of all the courses to get the full effect! The pool side restaurant had the best sandwich, the Azul Club! Our son must have eaten three every day we were there. They also had fruit and desserts there and would serve you at the pool bar.

The nightly entertainment was very good. The Circue Solei was unbelievable, the magician was terrific, the music was always great. We enjoyed playing bingo, but beware......they cheat!!!!! You will drink much tequilla while playing! The music trivia, very fun, but beware again, Sergio and Fernando cheat too!! Three times during the week, the staff takes all that want to go into Cancun to DaddiO's for drinking and dancing (still all-inclusive). Our son went and had a ball. They leave about 9:30pm and get back about 3:30am.

The girls all went shopping one day in Cancun and after seeing the hotels one on top of the other, made us appreciate even more the smallness and the intimate Azul. We all went for the day to jet ski, ATV, snorkel and to ride the spinnaker. It was the "combo" deal suggested by Francisco the "Funjet" rep. What a great time that was for all.

As you can see, our vacation from start to finish was one of the best the nine of us have ever had. Our only complaint was that the straws were not flexible and you had to raise up to sip your margueritas!!!! Mr. Lubo said he would take care of that!

I don't understand some of the complaining in the other reviews I read. My wife and I stayed for a week and thought it was great. There were a few minor glitches but the staff did their best to cure things as quickly as possible. We thought the food was good, the view from our room awesome, the bartenders worked very hard and refilled your drinks when they had time. There weren't a lot of kids so it was pretty quite most of the time and met a lot of good people in the bar but it does get pretty quite after 10:30 or so. I wouldn't rate it five stars but I didn't pay as much as a five star resorts cost. All in all I thought it was worth every penny we paid, but it just happened to be what we were looking for.

Extremely pampered describes our whole experience at the Azul. From the champagne greeting with a cold towel, to check out, we were treated with friendly, courteous and prompt service.
Our room was extremely clean, with the minibar restocked daily. We went through a lot of bottled water, and it was readily available in our room, at the bar, in the restaurants, at the sandwich bar and at the main bar. Also on the beach from those great beach butlers.
We loved the Hobie cat. Just sign up for a ride at the beach butler station on the beach each morning.
We snorkeled with the complimentary snorkeling equipment, and had a blast.
We always had prompt, courteous, service--at the restaurant, at the sandwich bar, from the beach butlers, and when we called for room service.
They do cash travelers checks if you want to use Mexican currency. They do not trade it back for American money. That would have to be done eslewhere. We found the airport to be most convenient for us.
If you take the van to Playa Del Carmen, be sure to ask if they stop at the Jewelry store--we did not know this, and we did not want to go there. Perhaps if you asked if they would let you off at Playa Del Carmen on the way to the jewelry store... That was our only negative of our whole stay.

For all those reading these reviews in anticipation of their upcoming trip to the Azul relax, you will not be disappointed. My husband and my two daughters age 18 and 11 all had a wonderful time. The beach was beautiful, no problems with sea grass, and butlers were great - always there when you needed anything (drinks, fruit, food, cold towels or a lightly misted face spray) We had fun playing beach volleyball, painting pottery and snorkeling at the beach, lounging on the hammocks and beach beds, they are fabulous. We saw a variety of fish and a small sting ray at the Azul beach, we took walks on the beach, be prepared for the nude beach, didn’t walk this way with our younger daughter. The grounds were beautiful and meticulously maintained. Our room was great. Good view, the beds and pillows were very comfortable and the sheets were soft and it was kept very clean and the mini bar was always well stocked. My daughters were originally in Building 3 and they did notice an odor in their room. It may have been because they were having some problems with the septic or plumbing, not sure, but they quickly remedied this situation by moving them to our building the following day and they loved their room and view. This resort was just what we hoped for, a beautiful, intimate relaxing resort. We never had to walk far to get anything. Even if you didn’t want to get up you wouldn’t want for much, there is always someone there to get you what you need. You feel like this is your own private paradise. Because of the size we were able to meet and get to know the staff, Fernando, Élan, Sergio, Bartenders, Batman and Robin. We also met some really great folks from Belgium, Canada and various parts in the US. The drinks were great; they would make them as strong as you wanted. The food was good. The guacamole, salsa, chips are wonderful and the fajitas at lunch were excellent. We mainly ate at ‘Blue’ - on the patio - good food and always good service. We did leave small tips - not because we felt we needed to, but because they really did work hard. I was surprised to read that some people had a problem with the service. We never experienced this. I enjoyed sitting down having a drink or a glass of wine and having my dinner served with beautiful presentation at a relaxing pace. When I’m on vacation I want to RELAX and that was the overall theme of this resort. While we were there we did take a trip to Xel-ha, which we could have done without, but we went for the dolphin encounter for our daughter and that was very good – our daughter really enjoyed it. We did get some nice photos and video to capture the moment. The place itself was beautiful and the snorkeling was very good. The problems we had were that the bus trip took 2 hours (stopped many times at other hotels) and the line to get snorkeling equipment was long as was the wait to get into the restaurants. We ended up eating at a buffet, not very good. I would recommend spending the extra money for a taxi and going on your own not on a tour bus – you would have more time at the park in the same total time spent. And don’t get the all inclusive – eat big at your hotel before you go. You’re cost should balance out and you’ll have a better time. We also went to Playa de Carmen, would have been better if you could just skip the jewelry factory. We had a great time at the Azul and can’t wait to go back!
