SSS trip Sept 28- Oct 5/12

We use TA as the go-to resource for choosing AI resorts. To give you an idea, we are comparing to Paradisus Riviera, Grand Palladium White Sands, Sandals Whitehouse, and most recently Iberostar Grand Paraiso. I might as well admit now that nowhere has measured up to our stay at Iberostar Grand Paraiso down the road.
SSS has lots of plusses with a few points that did not meet our expectations. Our preferences are for minimal hassles, adult only, fine dining atmosphere with tasty food, quiet location ocean view or ocean front room.
We booked a swim out room, requesting two double beds in buildings 1 or 2 if possible. Travel agent put in the request and we e-mailed 2 weeks prior to arrival. At check-in, there were no double bed rooms available in our room category. We offered to downgrade just to get double beds, asking if we could get a resort credit to offset it. Nope, and no double bed rooms in any category. They offered a single roll-a-way cot and a room change third night, so we took it. Most guests know the resort cannot guarantee anything beyond the room category. This is where we usually have hassles. We didn’t know this resort doesn’t have many double bed rooms, so if you are friends travelling, or like us, mother/daughter, you may have no choice but to bunk together, or try the cot.
Room 3123 showed obvious wear and tear, was missing I-pod dock with radio, iron, half the complimentary bath product, and came with a thick coating of dust on the TV shelf, cracked sink bowl, and a sink drain that didn’t seal. Not impressive. First night on the cot was uncomfortable and sleepless, and next morning I took the bedding off to find the cot frame and upper mattress were strapped together with a metal buckle positioned on the mattress top. We called for housekeeping to remove the cot. We shared the bed next night. As promised third night we moved to swim out room 4123, double beds, and even oceanfront. Room was super clean, well maintained, the standard we expected. Little touches like an audio system for TV in the bathroom is nice, all rooms are extra wide, and the ambience was beautiful and peaceful.

Resort property:
Smaller with an uncrowded feel, magical looking at night, but not as visually stunning during the day as SSS photos. Beach sand is fine and raked with lounge chairs and palapas available. If you walk carefully you can take an ocean dip mid waist level to cool off. We believe this resort is very good value for the price booked through West Jet Vacations.

Dining, restaurants, food service:
The no reservation system works well for the guests, and no hassles. All restaurants were good; all dishes were really artfully presented, with great service. If you have a big appetite, order 4 courses and dessert.
Ratatouille- braised beef ribs were succulent with complex sauce, rack of lamb (chops), and watercress salad with dried fruit and goat cheese good too.
Portofino- warm arugula and mixed seafood salad is good and has nice seating arrangements.
El patio portions are larger.
We tip regularly and well for good service, but noticed a lack of tipping from most other guests, both at the buffet and restaurants.

Two negatives issues about dining.
- The seating arrangements for tables of 2 (which includes most guests). It’s bench seating along the wall, chair opposite and tables maybe 2 feet apart, all down the length of the room. Not exactly setting the tone for fine dining atmosphere and there is no sense of privacy. Nice dress code, but seating cafeteria style.
-When preparing the tables for next diners, the table runner and table surface is lightly swiped with a dry napkin, and then clean plates and cutlery are added. This occurred as well every morning during the brunch from 7-11 am. We were surprised. The tables were not properly cleaned.
Dining and drink staff: outstanding service and warm camaraderie with most notably Victor De la hoz. Also excellent service from Natalio, Hugo, Juan, Manual, Felipe, Diago, Francisco and Havier.

Spa services and staff:
Watch for daily specials or use the resort coupons to reduce the pricing. The hydrotherapy circuit is not the most impressive, but we found the following services good: Tropical Escape and Oasis body treatments, Aromatherapy and Swedish massages and C & Sea facial. Ask for Liz.
Be aware the Water Lily Sun Relief treatment consists of lying between towels drenched in ice water complete with a few ice cubes. Lol. The pamphlet states it will cool your skin temperature. It is guaranteed to bring down a high fever though its excessive for minor sunburn.
Denise at spa front desk has a professional demeanour, very helpful, and overall outstanding at customer service.

This resort offers good value if you are looking for a relaxing attractive smaller AI with little quiet pools outside your patio or balcony. But we are returning to Iberostar Grand Paraiso January 2013.

After reading some of the reviews posted here by certain ppl , i thought it only fair to post a very honest review , especially seeing as i wasnt going to moan like 1 person did saying that the sea wasn't 'blue enough'!
Transfer time from the airport was just 30 mins and check in was very quick while enjoying the champayne handed to us on arrival.yes its the reception staff's job to try and sell you an upgrade but its only a polite no thank you and how hard is that?! I even managed to change my swim up room i booked to a more preferable location (opposite the barefoot grill / sugar reef bar).our room number was 4116. Very recommended if you likie being close to everything thats going on.
ROOM; very spacious very comfy bed , very clean and modern in decor.

BEACH; enough has been said bout the beach but the sandy beach is gr8,just the swimming in the sea a bit difficult from the hotel private beach. so if ya that keen on swimming in the sea just walk 5 mins up the beach and u can swim ya little hearts content! If you like to walk along the beach be warned, there is a nudist beach outside the swingers hotel called desire (approx 40 mins along the beach)

FOOD; 7 restaurants to choose from.our fave being the el patio, mexican and the bordeaux, french restaurants. Breakfast is served in the 'world cafe' which has every kind of breakfast you can imagine! An amazing array of fruit, pastries, cold meats and hot foods!

POOLS ; 8 pools to choose from which are all very clean and water quality tested daily.activities in the pool include a 12pm arobics and 1230 water volleyball aswell as a 'crazy game' every day at 3pm.you can even get a free 5 min massage beside the main pool everyday.

Entertainment; the entertainment team here work very hard all hours of the day making sure that every guest wishing to take part in activities enjoys themselves . they are an amazing bunch of characters constantly smiling and making sure you are too! i took part in the table tennis tournament most days and even tho i didnt quite manage to win 1 i still got given a large bottle of taquila for my efforts at the end of our stay! Thank you Cruz !! The evening shows were of a much better standard than i have come across before in various hotels i have stayed in.The rock of ages show, urban show and mr n mrs night were gr8 fun! all start around 9-30 til 1030pm.

Bars; We hang out in the veranda bar each night which was located next to the theatre and open til 1 a.m. The inside air con bar was only open til 11pm as was the quiet bar next to the beach. The barstaff work very hard as do all the waitresses with an amazing amount of different cocktails available,,,,strongly recommend the miami vice, mudslide and the sugar reef! but if cocktails arent your thing theres draft corona aswell as cans of bud,bud light or corona light.

Excursions; We went to xel-ha which was amazing! here you can swim with dolphins, manatee, snorkle as long as you like with an amazing amount of fish! jump off cliff tops zip line etc but when ya feel like a break theres 3 cafes to choose from or a deck chair or hammock to snuggle down for a snooze ! We also took the cab ride into cancun where the taxi guy will take you to market 28 and a shopping mall.be prepared to haggle in the market,gr8 fun for those who dont cringe at ppl desperate to get you into their shop or stall.big tip here tho,,,,,dont take the taxi ride, ask your tour operator about a shuttle! we found out about this after we had done the taxi thing which is $45 each way !! rip off !!!!

Finally i would like to say a big hello to NORA . she is an amazing waitress who works dam hard and will never let ya glass be empty!!!! also a big hello to Terri the waitress at the veranda bar, also an amazing worker constantly smiling and keeping our glasses full.!! We met some amazing ppl here that we have stayed in touch with so a BIG HELLO to Will n Sara, Robin n Michael, Dannielle n Kyle, John n Julie, Emma n John.

Room Tip: well worth having a swim up room.ok it still 20ft of grass to the pool but much better than going to...

It was our first all inclusive and we found it excellent, The food and drinks, especially all the cocktails were great, Our suit was perfect and to step out to the pool was magic. Our favourite bar was the Buccaneer bar on the beach, great views, cool breezes and beer flowing all the time.
The conciege service were very helpful at all times, as were the waiters and all staff. ERICK at Portofinos laid on a superb special private dinner for my birthday, a magic occassion. The world Cafe did an excellent buffet and RENAN was outstanding with his attention and service.
My only moan was that the World Cafe was not open in the evenings, meaning that you had to either have a full dress up meal or room service, when you only really fancied an evening snack and a drink. But overall an excellent holiday

Secrets Silversands is the nicest resort I have visited. It was truly a very relaxing week. The staff was top notch and super friendly. Jorge in the lounge bar was awesome! The grounds were immaculate. The pools were everywhere! Would strongly recommend! If you go take the time to visit Chichen Itza or one of the other Mayan excursions. Very enlightening.

Room Tip: If you don,t get a seaside room go up. As in the top floor. We still had a decent view of the ocea...

Like other reviews, the beach was just OK. We did not go into the water, but it was quiet opposed to the activities that go on around the pool. They did not seem to be particularly full, but somehow we were placed as far into the back corner of the resort, making it a trek to do about anything. Not that far, but the generators next door firing up every evening made it seem like we were in the middle of an airport runway for the noise. Resort is beautiful and very well maintained. Pools are huge. Food was unspectacular but good. Same with the drinks.
Our package came with some credits for the spa, wine, and other goodies. We learned that the coupons were not what we thought and would have to spend a lot of additional money to get any good out of them. Spa services were way overpriced. We were cornered on our first day to hear a presentation and get some free excursions, so we went. Took longer than promised and then the gifts were limited on what they could be used for.
The staff were very friendly and eager to please and we didnt notice anyone hanging around for a tip. The room clean up was somewhat irregular. Sometimes it was turned down in evening, sometimes not. Sometimes new towels, sometimes not.
The bright spot of the trip was a day trip to Tulum ruins and Playa del Carmen. We rented a car and took ourselves, very convenient with Avis right in the hotel. We just couldn't spend another day bouncing around in a bus.
Overall the experience was good... memorable. Weather was perfect. We didn't pay a lot so it seemed like a good value. But even with that said, I dislike being hustled to buy $11 wine priced at $72, and then they will give you $10 off with their coupon. C'mon...

That's place is amazing! Best all inclusive !!! Food and drinks are great! We went with 2 other couples and we had a blast!! We had a swim up ocean view room and loved it !! We all hung out in the pool right outside our room and we had great drink service from falipi !! He was amazing he checked on us ever 20 minutes !! Everyone as happy and helpful!! The best restaurant was the Mexican obviously!!! But alll the restaurants were really good! I'm a foodie and I am hard to impress and I was impressed!! The only thing that I was disappointed in was the spa. We used the resort credits but when we go to the spa and checked in there was no direction as where things were or how it worked but the massage was amazing!! We can't wait to go back!!!!

The beach as everyone says is small but honestly I'm more of a pool person so it didn't bother me at all! I liked being able to read a book on the beach then head to the pool !

Overall this place is amazing!!

We recently stayed at the secret silversands for our Honeymoon. It was exactly what we needed after 9 days in Vegas. We upgraded from a swim out suite to the Honeymoon suite when we got there. As we upgrade there was no time for the staff to decorate the room, but when a staff member brought our luggage to our room he came with a bottle of champagne and told us to let the conerige know when we would be out of the room so it could be decorated. We did so and when we got back after drinks at the bar, the room has rose petals leading to the bedroom and another bottle of champagne. All the staff were extremely helpful and were always on hand to help. The whole resort was amazing. Me and my Husband would definitly go back again. There is waiter service to you whereever you maybe, outside your room or even in the pool. There is entertainment though out the day and night and the entertainment in the evening is off a high standard.

The only downside is that the mini bar does not have any spirits, only beer, water and soft drinks.
