“Best Vacation Ever!”
Reviewed December 16, 2011

Stayed from November 27 through December 1st . Excellent resort! The hotel and staff were wonderful. We were in building 4 with a swim out room which is right in the middle of all the fun and action. Reading the reviews, I was ready to request/fight for building 4 but didn’t’ have too. Although a little confusing at check in…no one told us to just have a seat in the lobby and someone would be right with us, we figured it out. We did get the champagne and check in was a breeze. The resort and room were absolutely beautiful. We ate at El Patio for dinner every night because the food and service was awesome. We did try a few of the other awesome restaurants but still ended up heading to our favorite afterwards to El Patio. I don’t eat seafood and El Patio had the best beef tenderloin with a very mild four chilies sauce (I graved it everyday). The nightly shows were so much fun. There was only one bad/cheesy one….the magician was a little sad but we still enjoyed it. They do have top shelf liquor, we had crown royal every night. After reading the reviews we were prepared for pushy sales folks to get us to tour one of the sister properties but that never happened. My only complaint on this place is I can not afford to go more often. Trust me…you are spoiled from the minute you check in…the only sad part is leaving.

Room Tip: Building 4 swim out

My husband and I stayed at the property for 5 days 12/6-11. The resort was gorgeous, undoubtably! The food and service were impecable. The room, spa and entertainment were perfect. The only complaint we had was the beach was a mess, all the concern over the pipes on the shore line and sand were true. The hotel said it was a natural beach and they were trying to control the reef that was invading their sand. They should just let it be and remove the pipes so guests get an unobstructed natural view because its really distracting. The pools were cooler water and the outdoor hot tub was not hot at all. This left us to venture off the property to enjoy some of the beaches further south in Playa de Carmen and Talum.

Room Tip: if you want an ocean view be very clear on this, we paid for an upgraded partial ocean view and what...

Dear Dawn F,

As always we appreciate when our guests are so kind to share their overview on their stay on TripAdvisor and other via. We are overjoyed to read that you have enjoyed the service from our staff, food, suites, spa and entertainment.

Regarding to the beach current situation, I would like to mention that we are currently working on a beach-recovery program that has the only purpose of improving our beach appearance and offer our guests a much more enjoyable experience. The reef is not invading our sand, but it is true that we are located in one of the most beautiful protected areas in the Caribbean, just some hundred meters away from the second largest coral reef barrier in the world. The purpose of this project is to prevent erosion to keep our beach always beautiful for our guests. However as any other process this takes time and we truly appreciate our guests kind understanding.

So far we have recovered about 50 yards of beach, always respecting our beautiful natural protected area. Please be certain that this efforts are only for the main purpose of offering a better and enjoyable experience to our guests!

Again, we appreciate your comments and we hope we can have the opportunity to host you again so you can enjoy from our beautiful and improved Beach.

Warm regards,

Zuko Garcia

The title to our review says it all! Relaxation in the sun but fun activities to do when you felt like it. I played bingo, Mexican lottery and Black Jack a couple of times. My husband and I stayed five nights over the Thanksgiving holiday and Silversands was everything we hoped it would be. We were upgraded to a partial ocean view room in bldg. #4 and the room was large and kept very clean by housekeeping. We had room service every morning except the last day and they came within 30 minutes just like they said they would. We did not eat at El Patio because they have a Mexican Fiesta on Friday nights at the Sugar Reef Terrace. Also didn't eat at Himitsu but tried all the others, with Ratatouille (Mediterraean) being our favorite. The Packers were playing Thanksgiving Day (GO PACK!!) and there was a big screen TV (I think it was in the Desires Bar) and they had burgers, hot dogs and chips and dip for all of us to eat. The waiters by the pools remembered what we were drinking and kept us well supplied. Couldn't find a problem with the beach area but agree that the water is not very inviting for swimming. A couple of mornings there was the bad smell that everyone talks about but it seemed to be only those couple of mornings. We were very pleased with our stay and hope that we can go back again next year.

We purchased the Secrets Apple Square Deal package and were pleased with our placement at the Silver Sands. We are very seasoned travelers and this resort met our expectations. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a glass of champagne while we awaited check-in. Our room was ready, even though we arrived at about Noon and our luggage was brought up to the room promptly. We were assigned a room in Building #4 which had a partial ocean view pool view - Very nice! There are no wristbands or towel cards at this resort, which was a definite plus. All rooms had balconies with furniture.

Many reviews complained about the pushy time share people at check in at the resort. We had no problem in this area. We were given a "Get Me Now" welcome card, inviting us to stop at the VIP Service Desk in the main lobby to get a welcome kit (with discount cards). This is where the time share pitch comes in. Having encountered this type of thing in other resorts, we just opted to skip stopping at the VIP desk entirely and thus avoided the time share pitch. There was a recording, however, on the voice mail in our room asking us to stop by, but we chose not to.

The room was immaculate and bug free. The air conditioning worked well and the housekeeping service was great. All rooms in the resort are junior suites with a double jacuzzi tub, double sink, large shower and enclosed toilet stall. Some reviews mentioned the "open view" from the room into the bathroom. There is a sliding mirror right new to the opening - simply pull it over for privacy.
Robes, slippers, shampoo, shower gel, shower cap, hair dryer and magnifying mirror are all included. Room service is available 24 hours with a separate door to the suite, but we chose to eat in the restaurants during our stay.

The only buffet was in the World Cafe and it was available for breakfast and lunch only. The food and service were very good. Usually one or two of the eight restaurants were closed in the evening, and this rotated during the week. We chose the Bordeaux (french), Ratatouille (Mediterranean) and Portofino during the 3 nights we were there. There was no wait for a table in any of them. Food was great with the exception of the Portofino (we did not care for our appetizer, soup or entree at this one). The Seaside Grill, which is ala carte for lunch and dinner, had excellent grouper and it was close to the pool and beach. Top shelf liquor was available at all of the bars, and the bartenders made great drinks. If your drink is too weak, just ask and they will fix it. Dress code in the evening is long pants and a shirt for men. Many of the ladies wore dresses, or nice pants and a top. I would suggest bringing something nice to wear, not just shorts and tanks. Restaurants and bars are centrally located, with the majority right off the lobby area and the Oceana located beachfront.

The beach is narrow but not near as bad as some reviews mentioned. If you are looking for a large beach with crashing waves, then this is not for you. The sand is powdery and the grounds crew are manicuring it daily and removing seaweed. We had no problem with it at all and spent our time on the beach rather than the pool area. There was a crew removing any rocks in the swimming area and taking them in a boat further out to sea. The world's second largest barrier reef is located to the left of the resort, with tours available if you wish. You can walk along the beach both ways from the hotel and it was interesting to see the other oceanfront properties. There are plenty of chairs and umbrellas along the beach, but the chairs at the pool get claimed with towels very early in the morning. The reviews were on target here. You need to get to the pool early to reserve your chair. The water in the pools was a little cool, as other reviews mentioned.

In the evening, most people congregated the the Rendevous and Veranda bars. There was live entertainment at the inside lobby bar in the early evening, which was very nice. Beginning at 7:00 p.m. a waitress made the rounds at the tables with a flaming coffee bar. Delicious! Entertainment begins in the theater around 9:30 p.m., and after the show there is a band on the veranda (plays until about 12:00 or so).

The resort is just a short trip from the airport (about 15 minutes or so) and it is an adults only resort built in a contemporary and modern design. I would recommend it!

We just returned from our honeymoon at Secrets Silversands and we were very pleased with our stay. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were spoiled. When we arrived we got fresh hand towels and a glass of chapagne, they took our luggage right away and we were able to check in smoothly. The resort is a beautiful modern buidling with gorgeous decorating. It is a newer resort, and very clean and tidy. As we made our way to our room the gentleman taking us there showed us some highlights of the property. Once we got to our room we had a nice honeymoon banner on our door, a bottle of champagne and a letter awaiting our arrival. It was a nice little welcome treat.

Rooms - the rooms were emaculate! Very modern and spacious. The best part was the large jacuzzi tub with views to the ocean or you could close the sliding door for more privacy. Our rooms were cleaned every day and we did not have one thing to complain about, the staff really know how to take care of you. Our mini fridge was stocked every day. We were in building 3 which was one of the last ones, but we still had a partial view of the ocean. We were not to concerned as we were not there to stay in our rooms we were there to enjoy the view from right the beach. It is a smaller resort so everything is walking distance which is really nice.

Beaches and Pools - the beach is still being developed but VERY clean and quite if you are looking to spend a nice quite day by the water. Most of the people would stay up by the main pool as they play music (DJ for the most part) but we did have live music one day. They have games going on throughout the day (water volleyball, putting compeitions, dance lessons, spanish lessons, bingo, mexican bingo, other various sports, water aerobics, and beach volleyball to name a few). Prizes are given out and every night before the entertainment in the theater would start you would be called up on stage to claim your prize - a bottle of wine or tequila! They have many pools that you could go to, a main one, an infinity one, private more quite ones for each builidng - so there is something for everyone.

Resturants - the food was the best i ever ate!! Top notch services and meals were beyond 5 star! Even the snack hut and room service was amazing! You did have to make reservations for the hibatchi grill but it was worth it. Oceana and Seaside have an amazing menu to offer for lunch and dinner. Bordeaux was an amazing French resturant that offered the best meal i ever had! The servers were amazing, and it was a very nice romatic feel and quite.

Entertainment - the staff at secrets were amazing! So friendly, always had smiles on thier faces and hilarious! Even though they deal with lots of people on a day to day basis they never forget to remember your name! And boy can they dance! The shows were great, espcially the couples game - hilarious! At night the Veranda bar has great service, and live music each night, there was even some shopping brought in and casino night!

Service - the servers during the day are always around! There is never a lull in getting a drink, no matter where you are on the resort! Felipe and Leonardo always had a smile on thier face and ready to get you anything you needed! Roger at the Oceana resturant was an amazing server, and Alex was a great entertainer! Russell served as many times at the Veranda bar and we loved him! - You won't be dissapointed by ANY one serving you here

We went November 18-25th and we couldn't have asked for better weather! Rained maybe a few minutes in the morning one day around 6am and for a few minutes around 4pm.

This is definetly a couples resort, very elegant and the service is top notch!

Dress Code - for the most part it is casual, but guy's cannot get into the resturants at night unless they are in dress pants and a coller shirt. Ladies are more flexable. Most people really dressed up fancy at night, we were not expecting this so we didn't bring much dress clothes but be sure to pack some nice outfits or you may feel a little underdressed.

Overall we can't say enough good things about the resort. We were impressed with everything and would back in a second. We took a private van from the airport to the resort which was nice, we only had 2 other resorts to drop off at but they were close, we had a private van with direct transportation to the airport when we left which was very nice as well. The resort is about a 20 min drive from the Cancun airport (if direct).

Any negative comments you review about this site are just from picky people who need to sweat the small stuff. You will not be dissapointed with this resort, it is beautiful, modern and the staff treat you excellent, the entertainment and food is top notch - what else could you want in a vacation! I highly recommend booking here especially for a honeymoon, anniversary or just a couples get away.

Room Tip: All rooms are beautiful and as you see them on the website. It is just a matter of if you want a roo...

Our travel dates were 11/26-12/1/11- Sat - Thursday. ADULT ONLY RESORT

We had the "6 GOLDEN APPLE SQUARE DEAL FROM APPLE VACATION"
We were advised we could APPLE REP the day before we left so on 11/25-after 11:00 am to see which SECRETS ( 3 of them) we would end up at. Appears most of the people I checked with end up at the middle of the row SSS ( Secrets Silver Sands) Would not rate this 6 golden Apple-maybe 4 red at the BEST. The other 2 in this chain Capri -maybe lower than Silversands and Maroma- high end possibly the 6 Golden-not sure.

At check in we were escorted in to be checked in a WE were not on the LIST and was were asked for more documentation and advised to wait in the lounge area-and they proceeded to check in the other couples who did not do the Square deal (regular reservations-I guess)\After waiting for a long time (@ 45 min and patiently) and more bus loads came in and were checked in....??? My husband finally asked for the Manager and said why were we over looked…? and all the rest of these peopled checked in ahead of us? They did not say and then proceeded to check us in but said room not ready until 3:00-this is typical- But they assigned us a room number. 1206- Bldg 1- it was ok a bit dated but LG KING comfy bed-near the Gym. We confirmed with another couple and they also had the SQUARE DEAL and they also were set aside and not checked in- in the order we arrived.... hmmm perhaps a pattern here with SQUARE DEAL PEEPS???

Anyways the food was fine- lots to choose from- I preferred the Fresh made stuff over the Buffet-as the food was NOT HOT enough for me temperature wise... You can get bottled water nearly everywhere-not an issue. People usually get chairs- 7:30- or so Put towels out-

Not a lot of rafts around -appears waiting for new shipment-heard that a few times- they don’t allow you to use or bring your own, I tried-some lame excuse as to why not the right color blah… blah… blah-So I asked them to find me a raft ( the activities crew) and the did
HINT: they were kept in the Scuba hut near the pool...
Stay away from the whole LEFT side- ( standing in the lobby-looking out to the beach area) there is a processing plant near and sewer smells. We stayed in BLDG 1 and friends in BLDG 2- if was fine- just musty smells- rooms a bit dated. Maid service- always ask for x-tra towels washcloths and hand towels- never enough. Had to ask a few times to get our room cleaned ( we did not have the DO not disturb sign up either) 1 day I called 3 times and finally someone came....

BRING: own sun screen-hats, lip spf, Insulated mug-Imodium, pepto bismal, Aleve, Advil. ANTIBIOTIC ( CIPRO) /PROBIOTICS FOR STOMACH ISSUES....

BEACH: worse I have seen- many pools-we are pool people- infinity pools- and you can walk on the beach-reconstruction- bulldozers (loud) , smells.... rocks....so not the best beach.
All was well until Tuesday evening NOV 29- My husband became violently ill-super high fever-chills, and many other not so nice symptoms-we are not sure what caused this and may never know-??? Reason TO refer back to the BRING items list... TO have the doctor ( in house-I went to see him- to ask some questions- He advised X-TRA COST $130.00 TO COME TO THE ROOM) SO I just asked a bunch of questions- what to give him and eat- plain white rice drink-Gatorade.... Imodium, pepto, Aleve.. Advil.....

He was in bed all day WED no food sipping water-He was miserable- THURSDAY- we had to leave for home, OHIO....Left the HOTEL at 12:55 (about a 20-30 min ride to the airport) Plane did not leave until 4:00 pm .... really long day-to Washington DC--2 hr delay then on to Cleveland- attempt to control the SYMPTOMS on the plane rides.... bad travel day, just saying.... .

We got home FRIDAY@ MIDNIGHT.... he was still not well-again no food and little drink -I started him on CIPRO (had some left over-Yea I know your not supposed to save these) BUT boy was I glad we had them.... 500 mg 2 x day- within 24-48 he was starting to feel better- fever and other symptoms slowing, read on line appears BACTERIAL infection..... so antibiotics responded well. He is almost 100%, BUT boy were we glad to be back in the states- Doubtful we will travel to Mexico- for a long time, if ever again.

Room Tip: Stay away from the whole right side- there is a processing plant near and sewer smells. We stayed in...

Dear LMBall32,

Receive warm Greetings from Secrets Silversands Management and Staff. We want to thank you for taking the time to share your overview on your stay with us.

Let us start by apologizing if our service and resort have not met your expectations. Please be certain that this is not and standard of quality of service at our resort nor any other AMResorts property. We have taken your comment really serious and be certain that we will take the corrective measures to ensure that the situations kindly mentioned were not be repeated. Your feedback is always truly important for us.

Regretfully, your suite was not ready upon arrival since never received your reservation in our records. We appreciate your patience while our staff was working behind the scenes in making all the arrangements to be ready to host you. But please be certain that this is not a pattern for guests who decide to book on Square Deal promotions, we treat all of our guests as equals disregarding their booking promotion or travel agency, please receive our sincere apologies if this was not the impression that we have caused on you. Our guests are and always will be our top priority.

In terms of your kind comments on housekeeping service, our Supervisor had taken note on their highs and lows and will reinforce training procedures for our current staff. Again your feedback is always very important for us.

As part of our constant care for our guests we follow strict hygiene control audited by external and internal companies certified by the Mexican health authorities. We also provide onsite doctor assistance 24/7 in our resort ready to take care of our guests in any case of emergency. We encourage our guests to visit the doctor and do not auto medicate for better health results. We regret to know that your husband became ill while your stay with us. Many stomach problems could be developed due to several reasons. We did not have any other reports about ill guests during your stay and we regret to know thata he had gone through this situation. In cases like this our Food and Beverages staff is always more than happy to offer our guests special diets in order to ensure a fastest recovery.

In other hand, we are glad to know that you have enjoyed our food choices, beach and pool tower service.

Regarding to the beach current situation, I would like to add that we are currently working on a beach-recovery program that has the only purpose of improving our beach appearance and offer our guests a much more enjoyable experience. The mentioned recovery program has the authorization of the Environmental Authorities.

Once again, we thank you for your comments and we hope you can give us a second chance to offer you a truly memorable stay in our best “Secrets Silversands style”.

Warm regards and best wishes for this 2012!
