“Abbey del Sol - a Hidden Treasure of the Mayan Riviera”
Reviewed March 18, 2010

Hidden in plain sight between Cancun and Playa del Carmen lies the little fishing village of Puerto Morelos. This is one of the last colonial villages along the Mayan coast, and a closely guarded secret among those who like to escape frigid winters of the north. The town has a recently updated square, where children and musicians play. Restaurants, markets, and shops line the perimeter, offering anything a tourist wants. Fishermen bring in their catch for sale at the nearby pier. Snorkeling, scuba diving and day trips can be arranged here. It is a quiet place, where the sound of laughter is as common as the dogs sleeping in the streets. One could rent a car, but most people walk or bicycle easily to get from one end of town to the other.
Abbey del Sol lies near the north end of Av. Ninos Heroes. The complex is made up of two locations: each across the street from the other. Abbey One is a lovely renovated home with three units above it. Abbey Two is a bit newer and larger, with multiple units. Much thought has been given to ensure the comfort and convenience of the guest. It is easy to cook in the units, which have well equipped kitchens with blenders, microwaves, and toasters. Beach chairs and umbrellas are provided for days on the beach, and lounge chairs for days at either of the pools. The staff are willing and gracious to help with just about anything a guest could want; from arranging for airport transportation to massages, cooking classes, trips to the Colonnia, guided tours, and many other recreational activities. The gardens are the nicest in town, and their loving care is apparent by the huge bougainvillea draping over the walls.
Artisanal touches abound, hand-wrought iron gates provide security, intricate stonework paves the walks through each of Abbey One and Two, and the flowers of the gardens continue to flow through the murals hand painted on the walls.
Each year is better than the last, with constant improvements/enhancements being made. The management and owners are always helpful and engaging; creating friendships with guests, many of whom return yearly. Abbey del Sol is a real treasure, but one that’s not too hard to find, in the Mayan Riviera.

Abbey del Sol is a wonderful small lodging facility on the Mayan Riviera that will be of considerable interest to experienced travelers seeking an authentic Mexican travel experience and wishing to bypass the frenetic glitz of Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Located approximately midway between these two highly developed tourist destinations, Puerto Moreles is a a real-life Mexican fishing village that maintains (at least for the time being) the right balance between tourist amenities and a “tranquillo” lifestyle. Village life revolves around the small central square with a collection of good restaurants, a modest grocery, a pharmacy, the town dock, taxi stand, the Mayan handicraft market, an ATM and a booking agent that can arrange tours to all of the attractions throughout the region. The beach is just as beautiful as the more crowded resorts and the world famous protected snorkeling reef is directly offshore.

Abbey del Sol (abbeydesol.com) is a very attractive group of homes located in a desirable area of town about two blocks from the beach and a mile from the center of town owned and operated by Abbey Walker and her husband Tiff from Minnesota. Every unit is attractively furnished and fully equipped with every convenience including TV, wireless internet, full kitchens, beach equipment, pool and bikes. A free USA phone is in the office as well and hundreds of current DVD’s. Abbey and her staff could not be more helpful and accommodating. The full time resident manager, Jin, is bi-lingual and is available for special assignments including ferrying people to and from the airport.

We rented a car because we like to explore and did several day trips during our one-week stay. But a car is not essential because there are plenty of low-cost taxis for local travel and an AutoEurope car rental outlet is located on the main highway leading into town for short term rentals.

Aside from the obvious amenities of Abbey del Sol, the thing we enjoyed most of our stay in Puerto Moreles was meeting, talking and dining with all the friendly people that both live and visit there, Americans, Canadians, expats and Mexicans. Many of the guests are repeat customers love to share past and new experiences at the pool or hottub.

We found the cost of the accommodations to be very reasonable given the amenity level. Restaurant meals in the town are generally better and less expensive than in the highly developed resort areas. If you “eat-in” you can buy a nice fresh grouper on the dock, cleaned and scaled for less than $2USD. There is even a German beer garden just down the street that has a happy hour where you can get a bottle of good Mexican beer for about $1.25.

This was our fourth trip to Mexico and our second to the Mayan Rivera. We highly recommend both Puerto Moreles and Abbey del Sol Abbey del Sol to seasoned travelers is interested in a laid back, authentic travel experience.

We have always found Abby Walker, the hotel owner and her staff to be friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable about the area and things to do. These are great people and they clearly enjoy their work; their hotel and its amenities reflect that. We think the hotel is a small jewel, well priced and very convenient to exploring all aspects of the Yucatan - cenotes, archeological sites, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Merida, etc. We always suggest it to friends especially if it's their first time in Mexico or the area. We have been to Abby del Sol three years in a row and we will be back in 2011!

Our 12 day stay at Abbey del Sol over New Year's 2010, was relaxing, quiet, comfortable and reasonable. Our Unit #9 was a ground floor unit of about 500 square feet with a large private patio off the living room. Our routine was to have breakfast there and walk downtown 15 minutes away for the rest of our meals. There is a surprising number of good restaurants in this town of 2000-not gourmet of course but good. The beach was two blocks away, the staff and owners were great and they all contributed to a great vacation. Like MacArthur, we will return

we found the place beautiful, quaint, well- maintained, managed efficiently seven days a week by the owner , 30 minutes walk from town. the rooms - we stayed in three - were always clean and airy. The place really has charm: flowers, plants, trees and a lovely little pool at the center, and the location is 15 minutes walk from the beach... Advice: bring your own tea pot or prepare to be very careful. we forgot and burned ours...Ask where the outdoor hose and shower are located because the place is not marked by a sign and you will track sand into your rooms otherwise. WiFi reception spotty but management was working on the problem when we left. We loved the place , the manager and even the guests.

This last stay at the Abbey was my 5th. It was just as charming and wonderful as the first. The apartments have all the amenities necessary for a relaxing week and the staff are knowledgeable and hospitable. We will visit again soon!

Abbey Del Sol is such a cute place to stay in one of the most beautiful little towns in Mexico. It's a little ways out of the downtown area which is great if you want quiet, but a little bit of a hike everyday. That brings up two points.
1. Abbey provides bikes to cruise around town with, which is super helpful.
2. P.Morelos just isn't a noisy a town to begin with.

We found the price to be great and having internet connection was a real bonus. In fact, they were upgrading their internet while we were there, so it will be awesome in every room. We used this as a test trip for working while on the road. The test went very well.

Abbey Del Sol is a such a comfortable place and the grounds are immaculately kept. A nice cool pool for hot summer days and a loungy rooftop patio. Just don't lean on the edges. The blue comes off.

We loved the colours and warm feeling to this place. The staff were all great and very helpful. Be sure to take the ATV tour with Freddie out to the Kin Ha Cenote. One of the coolest things you'll ever do.

By all means... if you want to relax, Puerto Morelos is the town to do it in. For a wonderful stay, we highly recommend Abbey Del Sol.

PS... treat yourself to some of the best Shrimp Tacos in the world at Tacosdotcom just off the square. Abelardo and his family are amazing.
