Description: A classical Tuscan restaurant in the shade of our medieval castle of Poggio alleMura. Taverna Banfi, open for lunch, is positioned beneath the vaulted arches of the former barrel cellars of the castle where Brunello once rested in large oak casks. In a very pleasant atmosphere, our menu offers the traditional dishes of Montalcino and Tuscany, enhanced by the freshness and authenticity of local ingredients. To respect the calm of our guests, pets are not allowed.

We decided to visit the taverna for Sunday lunch. We had not booked and hoped for the best. When entering we spoke in Otalian to the waitress. Had we not and spoken English i dont think we would have got a table.

The food was exemplary. The portions are smaller but the top up of your wine and the added cantucci with your coffe is a treat. Well worth a visit.

Despite the dramatic hilltop location the hill-top restaurant surprizingly had no view and there was also no terrace to step out on, but we were not guests at the inn and the rooms might have had views. Ambience was pleasant and subdued, classical music played, tables were nicely spaced. Service was outstanding, food and wine was very good (especially the breads) but not the best we have ever had. Given the prices, the chairs in the dining room were surprizingly stiff and uncomfortable and we almost did not stay to eat because of the discomfort. I had to pad the backrest with my coat to make it tolerable. Would go back if in the area but only if armed with pillows and cushions for the chairs.

We dined there because we stayed at the hotel that night for the convenience. Service is upscale and meets all fine dining criteria, no question. The food on the other hand, did not meet our expectation for the Italian food. Although one of the dishes was exceptional; which is the first course pasta “pappardelle with pork sausage and eggplant", we loved this dish. The rest we tried were OK, and they were: the starter "Tuscan tuna" which is a pork dish, the other first dish "tortellini", and the second dishes; lamb chops and medallion of wild boar. The dessert was the traditional sienese pine nut cake ... All those dishes were OK; nothing special to remember. So, when I come back to stay at the castle next year, I will avoid the meat dishes and just stick with pasta.

Reservations are a must. We decided to have a 4 course prix fixe luncheon paired wines. A good choice as if we had Dinner and Wines driving back to Collato would have been a distinct challenge.
