We have just returned from a short break at the Portlight. Hotel...again. A pet friendly, family run hotel ..The rooms are always very clean and comfortable, excellent food.. a large menu to choose from and the staff are always friendly. We are assured of a very warm welcome from Sean and Hazel, nothing is too much trouble, We have stayed here many times with our dogs who love it, as we do.. There are plenty of places to visit ...coastal or market towns... or just walk and enjoy the fantastic views and coastline.

This is my honest opinion of the Portlight Hotel. We chose this hotel as it is very dog friendly, has beautiful views by the sea. There isn't a photo of the hotel building itself on their website! Probably because it may put you off going as it is not very appealing. They don't mention any of the history on the website. It used to be an RAF station in the second World War! The food was very good and the barman Richard was very helpful. Our accomodation room 5 was clean but the bathroom window blind was very stained! No real pride in the rooms. The zip link beds are not very comfortable. The pillows are lumpy and uncomfortable. The restaurant and stair carpet leading to the hotel rooms is very dated and shabby. The location of the Portlight Hotel is fabulous. Excellent for walkers and dogs. It has wonderful views of natural beauty. Dogs are allowed all around the hotel which is a bonus, we were not offered dog biscuits as previous review said. It's more like a guest house than a hotel. There are no visible signs of star rating or food hygiene certificates. The owners could do so much more!

Room Tip: Room 5 is above the restaurant but has good views, the ground floor rooms look better.

We chose Port Light due to its dog friendly reputation and had 3 lovely nights in August. The glorious weather helped and its position on the cliff top is fabulous although i can imagine it could be a bit bleak on a cold wet visit. Our 1st floor room (No.6) had amazing views over Hope Cove Bay and Burgh island and we could lie in bed and watch the sun go down and great to see the tide coming in/out! Very friendly staff and especially good value if you have dinner, bed and breakfast. The food was very good - nothing fancy but nicely cooked and almost too large portions but did seem a little expensive if not part of the dinner/b&b deal - we had to take advantage of the fantastic walks from the hotel to shed a few calories! Our room was nice - very clean and with modern decor and comfortable bed but the hotel generally is looking a bit tired and scruffy, particularly the guest entrance hall and stairs and it isnt the prettiest of hotels but its position makes up for it. It would have been nice to have a comfy chair in our room and we had a little balcony but couldnt sit on it as no chairs! A couple of simple fold up chairs would have made all the difference. Our cocker spaniel enjoyed it as much as us and there is a guest fridge to keep your pets food.

Room Tip: Room 6 has a fabulous view and a small balcony

We never stayed at this hotel but we went for some food because they where dog friendly. I don't like to be rude because they where hospitable and the service was fine but the food was very poor, really the kind of place your nan would like.

We have just had a lovely few days at this hotel. The view from our room and even from the bed was nothing short of beautiful. Very dog friendly. Our Labrador was one of several dogs all of whom got on amazingly! There was regularly biscuits for the dogs from the bar staff. Dogs are welcome in all areas of the hotel except the kitchen. At Last! A common sense approach to health and safety. The hotel is set right on the coastal walks with walks to Hope Cove in one direction and Soar Mill cove in the other. Excellent food and a very wide choice on the menu. Great breakfasts. If you have children, there is an excellent play area with tables for the parents. Sean and Hazel have an amazing hotel with very loyal and friendly staff and they are doing an great job. Nothing is too much trouble.

Room Tip: room 6. Views all the way down the Cornish coast.

only visited for a meal, 3 adults 1 child. childrens play area was thumbs up from 6 year old. meals served in Cheeswright snug. cod and chips v. good. deserts v. good. cheese platter, recommended. Dartmoor ale was good, best tasting ale in many a year. couldn't see any demarcation for pooches but residents lounge roped off from restaurant which very odd, maybe that was for pooches or Dartmoor ale was getting to me. i think it was an RAF station in WW2. looked a bit like an old 40's type civil building, maybe a signal station. liked the place, nice staff. cost of meals was about £70 which for 4 of us and my beer was ok.

Room Tip: did not stay overnight.

My husband and I along with our two boxer dogs have just returned today from a 4 night break at this hotel. We have nothing but praise for the staff and their eagerness to please at all times. We managed some wonderful walks along the Downs, thanks mainly to the good weather and wide and tended National Trust foot paths. The views were to die for.
We couldn't wait to enjoy (as we knew we would) our evening meals; well with a daily choice of 11 starters and 22 main courses one couldn't help but get excited about the food and 'oh boy' was it good.
Yes it is a 'dog' friendly hotel and well advertised for that so that is why we chose to go there. There are dogs sitting in the restaurant but our experience showed that they were all very well behaved and if you were resident one had the choice to leave them in your room.
We would strongly recommend this hotel for a truly peaceful break.
P.S. Room 7 is the best .

Room Tip: We requested room 7 having read the hotel info on the internet. It really suited all our needs perfe...
