“If you are going to go to Samburu, make sure to stay at Sarova game lodge”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

I highly enjoyed my stay at This resort/lodge that is located in Shaba game reserve, just half an hour drive from Samburu National Park that is on the other side of the main road from Nairobi to Ethiopia. I highly enjoyed my stay in this resort. The rooms are well appointed, the location is like an oasis, the service is impeccable and food is outstanding. I highly recommend staying at this resort if you are going to visit the Samburu National Park or Shaba game reserve. I am sure you will enjoy your stay as much as I did.

Dear guest,

Thank you for chosing Sarova Shaba on your visit to the region. Your very positive feedback is highly appreciated.
Indeed the lodge location is an oasis and every effort to maintain nature was taken and thus the beauty to behold.
Our location right in the center of Kenya and on the Isiolo- Marsabit highway ( Just 8 km of off road driving to the park/lodge) makes us the most accessible facility in the region. We are happy that you tried us out.
A unique aspect of the three parks here (Shaba, Buffalo springs and Samburu) is that you can visit any of them using the same park fee ticket. This makes it possible to stay in any of the facilities in the region and do game drives in any of the parks as one pleases.
We are also the only facility in the region connected to the grid and also fully on wifi thus adding to your comfort and convinience.
We take great pride in your comments as they have encouraged the team here to strive to improve.
We look forward to your next visit assuring you of a most restful and enjoyable stay.

Best regards

Great holiday destination for the whole family. Had a two year old with us and he also had a great time in this child friendly location.
Area of improvement: At dinner and lunch clearance of used dishes. There was no fruits variety to choose from. At arrival potters suggesting we carry our own luggage.
Otherwise everything else was outstanding.

have been to many Sarova hotels but this is my favorite. Great hospitality. Spending two weeks and on a special diet was not stress, the matron a veronica made sure that each meal time a tantalizing dish was ready for me. And the executive housekeeper, Mr. Mathenge is great too. My house keeper, a Jefferson was very nice. I would stay there again and again.

Room Tip: upstairs room offer e better view of the river and he crocodiles in it.

The services exceeded my expectations
The food was great
The swimming pool was awesome!
The staff were friendly and very helpful
Sarova Shaba is an excellent place. It's beautiful, peaceful, quiet, serene, and relaxing. The rooms are really nice. The service is great! The employees are very friendly and helpful. There are crocodiles and monitor lizards to view from your room window, but that are located on the other side of the fence. So it's safe. :-) The pool is nice. The food is spectacular. The animal shapes they make with the towels is one-of-a-kind. It's a great place to vacation. It's also a very scenic drive from Nairobi.

Room Tip: Any top floor room is great!

The Shaba Game Lodge and the surrounding Samburu-Buffalo Springs-Shaba National Reserves are at the northern end of the usual Kenya/Tanzanika safari circuit. The last few miles to the lodge are probably the roughest of any roads we encountered in Kenya and that is saying a lot. I am not sure how vehicles even reach the lodge during the rainy season. However, the good news is that both the reserves and the lodge are worth the long, rough ride.

We arrived at the lodge just as the Prime Minister and his entourage were leaving and I thought we would be stuck with a long wait in all of the confusion. But this lodge has its act together and our group was checked in and shown to our rooms in short order - political big-wigs or not. All of the rooms have a great view overlooking the river. Unfortunately, with the admonition to keep our windows shut at night due to the baboons, we couldn't enjoy the sounds of the fast flowing river. Speaking of these windows, we were a little concerned about the heat in the room with the windows shut, but the overhead fan proved sufficient to keep us cool. (I wonder what happens in July?) It would be nice if the Shaba Game Lodge and its sister lodges could come up with a window barrier that would keep the animals out while allowing the guests to enjoy the sounds and smells of the African climate.

The common areas of the lodge are open, roomy and very inviting. There are trenches cut into the floors which allow water to flow through the lobby and bar areas - very nice, but just be careful especially at night when it could be easy to step into them. The second floor restaurant had another great view of the river and the buffet was plentiful and good. This was one of the few lodges we visited that had free "potable" water available in the dining room for all meals. A definite winner!

Monkeys roam the grounds at will, adding a nice touch to the ambiance. The lodge itself is well positioned for game drives in the surrounding reserves and animals of all types were plentiful during November when we were there - including a pride of lions.

My complaints are few. Besides the window situation, there were a few bugs in the room, especially in the bathroom at night - but this is Africa. (The rule of counting to ten after turning on the bathroom light is a good one to follow.) Also, the door locks are somewhat antiquated - not a big deal, but when one is trying to lock or unlock the door after dark while dodging the insects attracted to the porch light every second counts. But overall a great place to stay and experience Africa.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed to be equal in view, however the upstairs rooms probably have the better view. Sin...

Dear Guest,

It was a pleasure hosting you. We are very encouraged by your very positive remarks as indeed we are greatly encoraged. We have noted your concern areas and would like to assure you that the need to keep your windows shut at night does not arise as monkeys and baboons do not venture at night. You could therefore enjoy the night breeze as long as the window gauze provided is shut to keep off insects etc. It is also advisable to keep your room doors closed especially at night when the lights in your room are on as this is what attracts the insects.

Some grading on our 8km stretch is underway and thus ok for all weather use as you will note that it is on very firm rock and not muddy area to have any vehicles stuck.

We do look forward to your next visit and take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a happy new year 2013.
