Lovely peaceful setting, chalets surrounded by beautiful wildflower meadows, teeming with birds and insects. Friendly, chilled out owner, Steve, can turn you into a top pizza chef with the centrepiece woodfired pizza oven he fires up on request - he even provides the dough! Two minutes walk down to the beach, stunning views of Golden Bay. Highly recommended!

Spiders web every where, looks like the place has been inhabited for ages. Don't look under the mattress otherwise the spider webs will surprise you - as thick as a blanket!!
The kettle and the cooking utensils were rusted and scratched.
The TV was a "small box" analogue, like in 1980 's.
The water was running rusty from the tap.
There is not enough water pressure in the shower and the sewage smells.
The so-called "Wireless" was too weak that only works if you stay outside the keeper's house which is 500 m down the slope.
The window has a scratch mark which the keeper didn't bother to repair / replace.
Its worse than back packers. We all woke up early in the morning to get away from it.

Our family of 5 totally loved our stay here. We used the winter special 2 nights for the price of 3 deal but you don't need a special deal to enjoy staying here. Lots of local knowledge helped us choose which activities to prioritise and we loved the extras available on site such as the pizza oven, spa and awesome yoga class! The cabins are close enough for sociability if you are in a group but positioned for privacy if you aren't. The central lawn area and layout of the cabin makes supervising children playing easy. The cabins themselves are very clean, comfortable and there is everything you need. We will be back - and happily recommend this property to anyone desiring a laidback, relaxing enjoyable break.

Thanks for a great review! You really captured what Hayley and I are trying to achieve at The Sandcastle - feedback like this is very encouraging for us! We enjoyed having you all stay and hope you return some day - we saw a New Zealand Kestrel circle our valley and a small pod of Orcas passed up Pohara beach, it is a special place to share.

This is a great place to stay in Golden bay. This is a 10 minute drive from the main town so a nice little quiet place to escape. The beach is just down the road. The cabins are nice little rustic cabins with all the basics you need. There is a spa and sauna for guests to use which is a nice little treat. All the cabins look onto the lovely garden. This place works well for families, so saying that, if you are looking for an escape from the little ones this may not be your first pick, but if you enjoy the sound of kids having fun on the lawn it a great place to hang out. We easily could have stayed for a quiet week!

These charming beach cottages - contain everything a small family or couple need to kick back, relax and inhale the unique Golden Bay environment and culture. Each cottage/batch is fully self-contained with kitchens, bathrooms and plenty of living area. They are well maintained, clean and bright. The sandcastle is located within walking distance of lovely Pohara beach and its village - with a couple of lovely cafes and restaurants.

The spa and sauna are functional - but probably quite old and dated. Lovely however to enjoy onsite..

The hosts were extremely friendly and welcoming.

Greetings one and all. We had the pleasure of staying at The Sandcasle over Easter 2013. The accommadation was clean, the views are outstanding and the location is excellent. We enjoyed the use of the pizza oven to entertain friends with great results. We were a group of four and found the price to be very reasonable. This area is a jewel, also home to a bit of a micro climate. As we basked in sunshine, the western side (Collingwood area) had rain !! We went for the rock climbing available locally. Being sea cliff climbing, the atmaosphere is sublime. Thanks to Steve and the staff for an excellent holiday. Regards, Simon Courtois
