“Motel Hell”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2012

Welcome to Motel Hell.

You want a new towel? That will be $10
You want the floor cleaned in the bathroom? Another charge
You want the bed made? That will be another charge.
They are all listed in the handy plastic guide in your room.

I have never in 40 years of business or personal travel encountered a motel that does this.
It works when your guests aren't coming back anyway.

Rooms have not been updated since they were 'too old to rent'.
Visualize paint over paint over paint over old wood.

The toilet in the old (really old with cheap plywood) bathroom flushes up. Visualize what is in the toilet on the floor with each flush. But relax you can have it cleaned every day for an extra $20 or so...

If you are feeling perky you can try to back your car around the sign that extends into the driveway that normally take chunks out of guest cars. It could have been erected in the yard but was cleverely designed to extend into the driveway a few feet to make your stay really fun and test your skills.

Read the comments on the www site and you would think this is a great place - like we did.

Where did those people stay? Is there another motel with the same name?

The motel looks nothing like the photos. Sounds remote, quiet etc. it is really run-down, on the road and just 2-story.

If you think this is extreme simply contact them and ask them to send you the list of charges - in addition to the already too expensive for bad lodging - room charge.

There is a trampoline. You could at least sit outside and watch the stars except they have figured out a way to kill that fun by putting blinking lights in the tree that will drive you made.

Inside the rooms are basically unlit except for basic institution lighting. The TV is the size of the the one on the back of your airline seat and probably has tubes.

Golden Bay is too nice to waste it here.

This is what living in an old age home is like.

Room Tip: There are none.

It's was getting dark and we were look for accommodation for the night (17Sep2011). We passed by Bay Country Lodge, Golden Bay, NZ. and decided to check it out. It turned out to be surprisingly good. Michelle the host offered us a beautiful room that opened out to an equally beautiful garden. Wi-fi was free and limitless, a great bonus as most other motels charged. We had a wonderful sleep that night. We highly recommend this motel to anyone heading that way.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms open out to the garden.

Having traveled to many countries in the world, it's a joy to find Golden Bay, New Zealand and an accommodation such as Bay Country Lodge. We so enjoyed our extended stay for it's 'kiwi' charm of homeiness and friendliness. The place was spotless and the amenities of a complete kitchen made it easy and comfortable. It's a true slice of rural beauty and a great place to stay.

We enjoyed our stay at this motel, the staff were very friendly and our room was clean and enjoyable to relax in. A well equipped kitchen and a 5 minute walk to Pohara beaches makes this a great location to get away.

A motel for people who are looking for a tranquil, homey place to stay and are not into pretentiousness. I have stayed with my young children at Bay Country Lodge three times now and the Kiwiana charm and value for money keeps bringing me back. We are booked in to stay 10 days in September 2010. Can't wait to do it again.

It has easy access to the beaches, Wainui Falls, Grove Scenic Reserve and Abel Tasman National Park. It is tidy, cheery, well maintained and warm. It has the very rare luxury of WIFI internet access-- not typical in this neck of the woods! Great service from attentive hosts. The kids loved the lush gardens.

2 trips and 6 weeks spent in New Zealand have given us many reasons to tell all that we know "This is a beautiful country to visit" And it is the people that make it so. We have stayed in all types of accomodations on our trips and felt that Bay Country Lodge lived up to our expectations of friendly ,wonderful and helpful staff. They were our family , heck, even the neighbors were sharing insights on how they grew such beautiful roses. Loved Golden Bay, loved Bay Country Lodge. Claudia Loy, Key Peninsula, Washington

Booked a one nighter in a family room at this place after looking at its ad in the AA book. It was the only room in town by the time we got there and we now know why. Its up for sale--has been for a while it seems--and theres no investment in the place. We had a downstairs room nearest the road--which is noisy. It did have double access to a garden and plenty of chairs and two tables but the interior was dated. If you are into colour co-ordinates this isnt for you--think green pillowcases, lemon sheets and bright red check blanket and youve got it.
As the last room in town you might check in--we wouldnt! But it does have free internet!
