My partner and I have travelled to many places but none come near to the peace, tranqulity and homeliness of this wonderful accommodation and, indeed, the whole village. I did have to think carefully about adding a review because I selfishly wanted to keep it to myself!! This is a total chill out experience so if you want to forget what day/time/month/year it is, read, swim, walk, chat with locals and not much else then its the place for you. We stayed for 10 days and could have quite happily stayed for 10 years and started to plan our next trip as soon as we got home.

If you expect four star accommodation and facilities, this may not be the place for you. However, if you have no problem with basic facilities (all rooms have en-suite facilities, a comfortable bed, air conditioning and a balcony with views of the sea or mountains) at a wonderful traditional Cretan taverna right on the waterfront of the old port of Sfakia then you will enjoy the Lefka Ori. The owner and his three sons (who are all fluent in English and each have other language skills) exude traditional Cretan hospitality and are always ready to provide you with advice on things to do. Their taverna is one of around eight on or near the port and serves a wide array of traditional Cretan cuisine at very reasonable prices. After each meal, complimentary desert and some home made raki is provided by the taverna.
We stayed there for six days and wished we had more time as there is so much to do and see in Sfakia region. There is a small beach right next to the hotel (pebble beach) with amazing crystal clear water. A number of other beaches are nearby, some of which are very secluded and virtually empty. Sweetwater beach is a must and can be reached either on foot (75 minutes) on a death defying 'path' cut into the cliff face or by a 'taxi' boat from Sfakia port. There are numerous interesting villages nearby that can be reached on surfaced roads, some of which are also cut into the mountain side with multiple tight hairpin bends, but magnificent views. Mind the goats!!! And if you don't want to walk the 18km Samaria, then the nearby 7km Imbros Gorge is a wonderful alternative.
All in all, Sfakia is a gem and the Lefka Ori is a great place to explore it from.

This small hotel in the lovely little town of Chora Sfakion in the South of Crete is a perfect spot to stay for a couple of nights or a couple of weeks.

The establishment, including (probably the best) taverna in the town is family business. Andreas Fasoulakis, the dad, is the chef and his 3 sons; Georgos, Manolis and Giannis work as waiters and help run the hotel too.

Our room was lovely, no frills, but none needed. We were in room 1 on the first floor, which I think is one of the smaller rooms. It had a double and single bed, ensuite bathroom and air con. It was very clean and towels/sheets changed every coupke of days. Lovely balcony with fab views of the pretty harbour and town. There is a gorgeous little pebbly beach 2 mins from the hotel.

The taverna itself serves delicious, excellent value food, including local specialities. It is also a perfect place to chill for a while over a couple of beers and a game of backgammon. Warning...beware of the Raki...it's fairly lethal! It's a very relaxed atmosphere and the staff are just wonderful, so hospitable and friendly.

Chora Sfkion is a quiet enough spot, so if your looking for crazy nightlife...this place won't be your thing. We were there in early July and the town was pretty much asleep by midnight. Apparently the busiest times are Apr/May & September when many visitors stay to make the most of the cooler temperatures for the wide range of walks and hiking possibilities in the surrounding area (e.g. "Samaria Gorge"). We did the "Imbros Gorge" - easier and less busy then Samaria...Fantastic!

Overall, if you are venturing around this part of Crete I would strongly recommend staying in the Lefka Ori. As accommodation goes, its simple but has everything you would need for an enjoyable stay. And it is fantastic value for money too. The Family running the place are the real treasure here!
