“What a great hike! (But go early)”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

I'd recommend going early--we got there early in the morning (before 9), so missed a lot of the huge crowds. The scenary was beautiful and changed every mile or so, so it was a very interesting hike. I've done a lot of hiking in the US, but hadn't seen anything like this before! I wouldn't say it was too difficult a hike, but we were definitely wiped out by the end. The town you end up in at the end is a delight--make sure you bring a bathing suit so that you can swim in the ocean after the hike! It's really relaxing and a great way to cool off.

what a fantatastic expierence from getting on the coach in the morning driving up through the mountains then arriving at the gorge the views were awesome but as other people have said do wear good walking boots because the path is steep at first and very uneven not for dodgy knees farther into the gorge there are large boulders to negotiate also some streams to cross but it is worth it for the scenery and the expierence of being in there once through you come agia roumeli a really beautiful village where you pick up the ferry back to where the coach was waiting for some very tired but elated passengers

“The Samaria Experience”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

Certainly this is one of the best walking experiences in the world but there is more to Samaria than rushing though the gorge to reach your end destination, Agia Roumeli and the ferry boat trip back to your hotel. Staying a day or two at Agia Roumeli to enjoy the village after the tourist rush of the afternoon is gone is one option enjoyed by few. Great simple traditional food, unsurpassed hospitality by the local Sfakians, and a glass or two of raki on the house in the evening after your meal is all unforgettable experiences.

From next year there will be another option to further enjoy your stay in Samaria. One of the old families of Samaria, the Viglis, proposes to offer an extended option to stay there and learn more about Samaria, its traditions and its history. I found about it when I was in the village two weeks ago and it must be a great opportunity for those that are interested in more than a walk through the gorge. I am looking forward to this next year. One can find about this new initiative by searching on the net using the above title of this posting.

“Gorge Walk”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

The walk is very easy if you are a walker.
If not TAKE A POLE OR STICK to protect your knees.
The black rocks are well polished. Use good gripping soles.

“Good all round day”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

Let me start by saying that this really is a very straight forward and easy walk , well within the capabilities of most people . But it is also an extremely enjoyable experience . We were staying in Hersonissis so had a very early start , 5am to be precise and began the walk at about 9-30am.
The weather was ideal , cool to start and very hot to finish . As it is mostly downhill you can cover the ground fairly quickly , we did it in 4 hours (that is to Agia Roumiel) including our lunch stops and a beer stop (as you come out off the gorge) , and we were'nt rushing. The scenery was stunning , you do need to stop and look around to appreciate it. When we arrived at Ag Rom we went straight down to the beach and had a swim in the crystal clear waters of the sea , really refreshing. Then after coffee and cake it was onto a sunbed for a couple of hours for a doze, after that we casually walked up to then up to a taverna for a beer before taking a boat along the coast to catch the bus , arrived back at our hotel 10-30pm , a long but great day out
